Haberdashers’ Adams saw the founding of ‘Redefine’ – a society established AND led by African-Caribbean pupils under the guidance of Mrs Halcro and Mr Obeng-Asare. The aim of the society is to change pupil attitudes to diversity within the school, create an environment for members to socialise, as well as promote pride in each student’s ethnic background.
The group meets every other week and is led by a Sixth Form committee. The progress that Redefine has made in its first year has been incredible. The society has come together to deliver assemblies to the whole school on various topics, they have given the school a taste of different cultures – quite literally, by raising money selling different African-Caribbean dishes during Charities Week – and showing the school their beautiful ethnic attire during school Culture Day.
Redefine symbolises both positive change and community spirit. So, after planting the seeds of possibility, we hope to see the society flourish and grow.
