UK boarding: open for business and celebrated around the world

On October 4, 2025, the boarding community came together online to celebrate BSA and BAISIS’ annual International Boarding Day, sharing snapshots of boarding life under this year’s theme of ‘unique identities.’  

The response was incredible: social media feeds filled with students and staff sharing music, food, house events and traditions. From Scotland to South West England to Switzerland, from long-established full-boarding schools to modern flexible boarding models, each story showcased the diversity of modern boarding. 

“International Boarding Day captures the essence of boarding: inclusivity, success, global outlook and connection,” said Beth Hudson MTIOB, Executive Director Consultancy, BSA Group and Director, BAISIS. “It’s a reminder that member schools are not only thriving but proudly sharing their stories with the world.” 

Together, BSA and BAISIS represent more than 640 member schools in 40 countries, including 70,000 boarding pupils in the UK, all committed to globally recognised standards of excellence, safeguarding and inclusion.

While recent media headlines have focused on individual school closures or political uncertainty in the UK, the reality is most UK boarding schools remain confident, stable, and deeply committed to the young people and families they serve. They are also evolving; diversifying their boarding models, investing in world-class facilities, and enhancing their international support frameworks to ensure every student is known and cared for. Today, one in three UK boarders is an international student. 

International Boarding Day offered powerful visual proof of the sector’s vitality and reach. Schools joined in from across continents, reaffirming that UK boarding education remains a world leader in developing independence, empathy and global citizenship.  

For families and educational agents, the message is clear: 

• UK boarding schools continue to welcome international students with warmth 

• The sector’s diversity and quality assurance make it a trusted, future-focused choice 

• Behind every school is an experienced team, robust pastoral frameworks, and a strong community of peers ensuring students feel supported and inspired.

The success of this year’s International Boarding Day shows what data alone cannot: UK boarding is open for business. Combining heritage and innovation, it delivers exceptional academic results as well as lifelong friendships across borders.
