Royal Hospital School Pupil Wins the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Voluntary Service

Posted: 13th June 2024

Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Holbrook, Ipswich, is delighted to share that its year 13 pupil, Henrietta Tyler, has recently won the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Voluntary Service in the Young Person category.

Henrietta won the award as a result of her volunteering with the City of Chelmsford Mencap’s lifelong learning service, supporting people with learning disabilities of every age and ability.

Henrietta has volunteered for Mencap for 2 years with The Outreach Academy and has become a valued part of the team. She volunteers at least a day per week during every school holiday and has directly benefitted over 60 service users, and is a huge support to the staff team.  Henrietta supports in many ways, including providing one to one support and running whole class activities.

The Awards and Commendations for Outstanding Voluntary Contribution were recently presented to local people by The Mayor of Chelmsford at a celebratory afternoon tea held in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Chelmsford Awards for Voluntary Service were formed ten years ago by Chelmsford Community Voluntary Services (CVS) to recognise the outstanding contributions in volunteering by local people.

Henrietta’s nominator said: “Her abilities are outstanding, and she demonstrates a real passion for ensuring our vulnerable service users feel enthused, enabled and empowered.”

Grace Lidstone, Services Manager at City of Chelmsford Mencap, added: “Henrietta is a very mature and skilled young woman.  She takes her role very seriously, even attending training during her school holidays, but has a wonderful sense of humour and brightens the lives of our service users and staff.  Her abilities are outstanding, and she demonstrates a real passion for social care and for ensuring our vulnerable service users feel enthused, enabled and empowered.  Henrietta naturally understands how important consistency is in our sector – she volunteers on regular days and always takes the initiative by contacting us before her school holidays to let us know her availability.  Henrietta is also willing to help out at short notice and has been enthusiastic about developing her role in order to meet service users’ needs. Henrietta truly deserves this Award and I feel sure she will inspire other young people to volunteer in their local community.”

The Mayor of Chelmsford, Cllr Linda Mascot said:Throughout my Mayoral year I have visited hundreds of groups and met many outstanding volunteers around the district.  There are so many unsung heroes giving time to so many great causes. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every volunteer for the contributions they make in helping people of all ages to improve their lives.

Henrietta also commented on her achievement saying: “I am deeply honoured to receive the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Voluntary Service in the Young Person category. Volunteering has always been a passion of mine, and being recognised for my efforts is incredibly rewarding. This award is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the power of community and the impact we can make when we come together. I hope to inspire other young people to get involved and contribute to causes they care about. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along this journey.”
