Downe House is situated in 110 acres of wooded grounds, five miles from Newbury and within easy reach of Heathrow Airport. The school’s proximity to the universities of Oxford, Bristol, Southampton and Reading allows the girls to take part in a rich variety of academic enrichment activities outside the school. There are Lower School Houses for girls aged 11+ and 12+, and five Upper School Houses for those between 13 and 16. When girls enter the Sixth Form they move into one of two Lower Sixth Houses where they have twin-shared or individual study bedrooms and facilities appropriate to their needs. All the Housemistresses are members of the teaching staff and are responsible for the coordination of the academic, pastoral, social and moral development of the girls in their care. The school buildings include modern Science Laboratories, an Art School, a Music School, an indoor swimming pool and squash courts and technologically advanced study spaces and a traditional library. The games facilities are excellent; there is an outstanding indoor Sports Centre and an all weather pitch. The school has a state of the art Performing Arts Centre and a Concert Room, which are both used for lectures, concerts and productions. The co-curricular programme at Downe House is exceptional. The girls are provided with a wide variety of weekend and evening activities, plus plenty of fun trips, clubs, societies and events.
