Old Swinford Hospital

Sixth Form students at Old Swinford Hospital have today received their A Level and post-sixteen results, and now embark on the next chapter of the lives.

A fifth of grades were at A*/A level, four students are heading off to Oxford and Cambridge, whilst 10% of students have gained higher and degree apprenticeships positions.

Director of Sixth Form, Mr. Rob Orr congratulates students by saying “Sixth Form is a stepping stone to employment and higher education, and I am particularly delighted by our set of destinations this year.  The number of students who have secured places on selective higher and degree apprenticeships (JLR, Sky News, HSBC, Mott Macdonald et al), or competitive undergraduate degree programmes at Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and Russell Group universities is impressive.  This cohort has been a genuine pleasure to teach and they are a great bunch of young adults who will go on to brilliant futures.”

Three students are shortly to begin their studies at the University of Oxford and one at the University of Cambridge.  Head of School Harry Roberts, who recently returned from the Music Tour to Italy with the guitar ensemble, will head to Somerville College, Oxford to read Biology after achieving A*AA.

Fellow prefects, hockey players and Gold DofE participants Josh Milligan and Charlie Walker are also off to Oxbridge.  Charlie achieved A*AA to study Engineering at Oxford, while full-boarder and musician Josh gained A*A*A* and will read Chemical Engineering at Cambridge.  Gracie Winmill gained A*A*A to read History at Mansfield College, Oxford.  She did exceptionally well in her medieval history component where she dropped only two marks overall!

Apprenticeships are increasingly popular post-18 routes for OSH students and are the new gold standard for supporting young adults to outstanding professional careers.  Amateur broadcast journalist Evan Yorath has won one of only two places in the country on the coveted Sky News programme.  Taylor Sprigg will begin a Commercial Banking Apprenticeship position at HSBC, which will see her also gain a Batchelors degree in Financial Services Management, provided by the London Institute of Banking and Finance.

Engineering firm Mott Macdonald are soon to be joined by Ollie Ingram, who was part of the National Vase winning rugby team at Twickenham in March.  Connie Owens has a placement with Wall James Chappell Solicitors; Alex Haden will join BTS Property Consultancy; and netballer Eleanor Fairbrother begins her degree apprenticeship with Jaguar Land Rover and Warwick University in Digital and Technology Solutions.

As is increasingly the case at OSH, a good number of students have won places on very competitive science courses.  This year, our female scientists have certainly impressed with Grace Cartwright soon to commence her Physics degree at Bath; Isabella Brooks to study Chemistry at the University of Leeds; and as a result of her impressive Distinction*, A* and A grades, Annabel Payne will join the Geography programme at Durham University.  Anya Swain, meanwhile, has been awarded a place on the Ophthalmic Dispensing Degree Apprenticeship through Canterbury Christ Church University.

OSH will also see a number of future medical professionals beginning their further studies next month, including MedSoc leaders Tom Caladine and Taffi Matsenhura.  Taffi is going to Cardiff University to study Dentistry and Tom, who’s also a prolific fundraiser and Interact President, is heading to the University of Birmingham to study Medicine.  Max Truby is also on his way to Cardiff where he can continue his rugby career alongside his Biomedical Science studies.

Elsewhere, Oscar Jones achieved an impressive A*AA and is off to the University of Birmingham to study Civil Engineering; and Simeon Filipov will study Automotive Engineering at the University of Bath.  Faran Cartwright has had great success with her results and is going to Nottingham to read Classical Civilisation, and Lily Portch has won a place on the journalism programme at Cardiff.

Commenting on the Year 13’s successes, Headmaster Paul Kilbride says: “We congratulate all of our students here and also their peers across the country on what is, for them all, a big day.  They have had to adapt to a different experience than previous cohorts, not having sat GCSE and having had effectively three years of learning disrupted by challenges both global and national, and yet they have persevered and mightily pulled through.  Universities and employers are lucky to be on the cusp of meeting and working with them over the next few years.  This group of young people is a credit to their school and their families and we are rightfully proud of them.  We now wish them well as they head off and begin the next exciting chapters of their lives.”

Kings School Rochester

Headmaster Ben Charles celebrates top results with King’s leavers

King’s pupils secure first choice university places

Excitement filled the air as King’s School Rochester pupils opened their A Level results, many of which opened doors to top universities. The Class of 2023 achieved excellent results, with almost a quarter of all grades achieved at A*/A and over three quarters of grades being at A*-C, an improvement on 2019. King’s ‘grammar stream’ pupils also excelled with 41% of grades awarded being A*/A.

We are immensely proud to see that once again our King’s leavers head off to study an impressive breadth of subjects at some of the top universities in the country. From Maths with a placement year, Sports Management and Art at Loughborough, a number of Law students heading to Lancaster, East Anglia and Durham, English Literature and Creative Writing at Kent, Economics at Queen Mary, a pupil gaining a Music Scholarship to Durham, and another off to study Music at Leeds Conservatoire.

High fives for Heads of School, Aidon and Rebecca, both off to read Law

Aidon, our Head Boy and one of our first fully funded Chadlington Scholars, heads off to Durham University. “I’m ecstatic to have got into Durham to read Law. King’s has prepared me not only academically but socially, it’s helped me as a whole individual. King’s really encourages every pupil to get stuck into everything, even when it’s outside their comfort zone – no one judges you, it’s not about who’s the best, it’s just important to try new things. One of the many highlights during my time at King’s was the unique opportunity to have lunch with a former Prime Minister along with Lord Chadlington, my benefactor. The King’s experience has set me up for life.”

Rebecca, Head Girl, is set to embark on her new chapter pursuing Law at the University of East Anglia. Reflecting on her time at the school, she shared, “King’s has given me both academic support and the confidence to embrace university life. While bidding farewell is bittersweet after a lifelong journey since age three, I’m optimistic about the future and the strong connections forged here.”

The sky’s the limit for Tom

A stellar set of results (A*ABB) has secured Tom’s place to read Pure Mathematics with a placement year at Loughborough. Tom’s early attainment of an A* in Maths demonstrates his exceptional aptitude. “I’m feeling fantastic now my results are in and looking forward to the next step, pushing beyond my comfort zone, leaving home and experiencing the world. King’s has been instrumental; the myriad of extracurricular activities push you beyond your limits”. As he bids farewell to King’s, Tom offers sage advice to newcomers: “Seize every opportunity; it will give you more skills than you realise at the time.”

Mei Mae takes a global path

Mei Mae  is off to study Modern Languages with International Relations at Liverpool and is particularly looking forward to her placement year abroad in China. “I will really miss the King’s community as everyone here is so friendly.”

Lancaster Beckons for Law Studies

Toni appreciates King’s role in shaping his journey, particularly through all his music and sports opportunities. Passionate about music, Toni found his stride in the choir and orchestra. His advice for newcomers to King’s is “try to do as much as you can, there are so many activities to choose from.”

Read more individual stories here.

Ben Charles, Principal of King’s and Headmaster of the Senior School, said “I am incredibly proud of each and every one of our Class of 2023. They have achieved great things in their time at King’s, both academically and personally. As a non-selective school, personal growth and individual success are paramount and I’m delighted that the majority of pupils have secured their first choice destinations.

This year-group has dealt with the pressure of sitting their first set of public exams admirably, and I am confident that our pupils leave not only with a fantastic set of grades but also a skill set of practical competencies that will prepare them for life beyond school.

I am also grateful to our hardworking and inspiring team of teachers, who have always gone above and beyond to get the best out of our pupils. They have encouraged our pupils to think and not just regurgitate; rather to develop the problem-solving, creative, and resilient skills that they will need to succeed in the future.

I am thrilled to see our pupils progressing to such a wide range of universities and courses. This is testament to their hard work and dedication, and it also reflects the diversity of talent that we nurture at King’s. I know that they will all continue to achieve great things in the years to come, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”

Ashville

A LEVEL pupils at Harrogate’s Ashville College were praised after most of the Class of 2023 were awarded places at their preferred universities, from London to Toronto, Edinburgh to Florida.

As the school celebrates its 40th year of co-education, the results also shone a spotlight on the academic skills of its Sixth Form girls who performed outstandingly with the number of A* and A grades they achieved. Ashville’s girls defied a national trend reported yesterday by The Times that suggested female pupils were hit hardest by grade deflation.

This year’s set of results enable Ashville pupils to pursue their chosen undergraduate degrees, which range from Aeronautics and Astronautics to Medicine and also include Archaeology and Ancient Civilisation, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Finance and Management, Mechanical Engineering, Modern Foreign Languages, Physics, Physiotherapy, and Sports Management.

Destinations include some of the UK’s top universities including King’s College London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Leeds, Durham, Newcastle, Birmingham, Southampton, and Bristol.

A number of pupils will embark on the exciting next chapter of their lives by commencing their studies around the globe, securing places at the prestigious Toronto University in Canada, as well as in Germany and the Czech Republic.

Others are heading off to a wide range of excellent universities in the United States, including the Ivy League institution Cornell, the University of Virginia, University of Colorado, University of Central Florida and the US top Art and Design College, which is in Savannah, Georgia.

A total of 78 per cent of Ashville graduates were awarded places at their first choice of university, with a further 15 per cent have secured entry to their second-choice university.

One of the top-performing pupils, joint Head of School Fleur Croft, who achieved a set of three A* grades, said: “My results have exceeded my expectations.

“The sense of the unknown made me nervous in the run-up. I am delighted to be heading to Edinburgh to study History. It’s a good university and a lovely city that is fairly new to me so it’s the start of a new chapter. I have a lot to do in the next few weeks to get prepared!

“I would advise pupils doing A Levels next year to work hard – consistently. The teachers are amazing. I could not have done this without them!”

Fellow joint Head of School Toby Sinclair-Morris is now looking forward to studying Aeronautical Engineering at Leeds University after being awarded A*, A and B. He said: “I am pleased and very relieved to get into the university I wanted and hope to one day join the RAF.

“Ashville’s support was outstanding – I could not have asked for more. I have to mention Mr Mahawes Alem for his continued support, but in reality, every single one of my teachers have been fantastic.

“I have been privileged to have been a Head of School this year, so my parting words to upcoming A Level candidates would be that of course A Levels are important, and you have to work hard, but at the end of the day, they are letters on a piece of paper.

“You must not sacrifice your wellbeing because of them.”

Head of Ashville College, Rhiannon Wilkinson, said: “Results day belongs to our pupils – and I am delighted to see what their hard work over the past two years in Sixth Form has achieved. They are a credit to our school.

“Once again, there have been so many individual success stories which have filled the Ashville family with pride.

“We wish every member of this tremendous year group every success in their new lives and look forward to watching their progress as they continue their studies or indeed start their careers.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased for our pupils today – they’ve worked extremely hard and deserve everything they’ve achieved. It’s wonderful to see so many pupils achieving higher grades predicted – proof that our students take challenges in their stride, and with excellent and passionate teaching, anything can be achieved. It is bittersweet to say goodbye to the class of 2023, but I wish them luck in their future endeavours, whether it be higher education or straight into the world of work.”

Joining him at the University of Newcastle is Connie, who will also be heading Northeast – her A*, A, B will support her dream of studying Architecture. Mrs Charlotte Futter, mum to Connie and Deputy Head at Worksop College, said:

“I’m delighted with her results. Connie has had her heart set on studying Architecture, but knew she’d have to work hard to exceed her target grades to get onto the course. I’m so proud of her – I’m proud of all our students getting their results today.”

Continuing the school’s cricketing legacy is Alfie, who will be heading to Worcester University to study Cricket Coaching and Management. Worksop College has a long history of sporting excellence, boasting several sporting greats such as Joe Root, Samit Patel, and Adam Dixon.

Another pupil ecstatic to receive their results was Ella, who will be heading to The University of Surrey. An A*, B, B stands her in good stead for success in the field of Veterinary Science. Classmate Lydia was also pleased, her A*, A, B gained her a place to study Geography at Durham University.

Vice-Captain Scarlett will be heading up Manchester to study International Hospitality and Business Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. “I can’t wait to start my next chapter,” she told us. “I’m hoping to go into Hotel Management and do lots of travelling with it – I want to see the world. I will miss Worksop College but will certainly be popping back.”

Tudor Hall

Hard work and resilience culminate in excellent A level outcomes for Tudor Hall girls.

With the world returning to normal after the challenges of the pandemic, it is easy to forget that our 2023 leavers experienced significant disruption to their education, and that this summer was their first opportunity to sit public examinations. Approaching this challenge with resilience and dedication, Tudor Hall girls have achieved an impressive 42% A*-A grades, with two thirds of girls achieving at least one A* or A in subjects as diverse as Art, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Textiles.

Headmistress, Julie Lodrick commented:
‘I am delighted with the successes of our 2023 leavers. They have faced the challenges of the last few years with determination, optimism and good humour. We are proud of all that our girls have achieved during their time at Tudor Hall. As we celebrate their results today, we remember also that achievement at school should not only be quantified in terms of grades. The holistic learning environment they have experienced at Tudor has developed them both personally and academically and has made them into young women we are proud to know. We are privileged to have been a part of their journey.’

Tudor Hall girls’ individuality is reflected in the diverse pathways they will follow as they leave us. The school’s Aim Higher ethos, together with the strong working relationships between pupils and teachers, has enabled them to progress to a broad range of courses including German, Philosophy, Biological Sciences, Liberal Arts, Physics and English. They will be going on to study at highly regarded institutions both in the UK and abroad including St Andrews, Durham, LSE, Exeter, UCL, Imperial, LAMDA, The Courtauld Institute and The Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States.

Individual success
Congratulations to Jemima; her A* grades in Classical Civilisation and History and A grade in English Literature will see her begin a History of Art course. Jemima said, ‘I am so excited to have finally confirmed I will be attending The Courtauld Institute of Art in 2024 after the long wait for A level results. For this opportunity, I would like to thank Tudor for the wonderful support I have had from both students and staff.

From the beginning, my interests have been nurtured by my teachers, who each have a clear passion for their subjects and a genuine care for their students. I can’t wait to see what life will hold after the amazing start that Tudor has given me.’

With A grades in Economics, Spanish and Psychology, Asyah was accepted into her first choice of course – Business and Management at Bristol. Asyah said, ‘Despite the challenges of the last two years, my teachers have supported me fully in every way. No matter what you achieve, it is important that it does not define you. I am delighted with my results.’

With A grades in History, Politics and Art, Eliza will be reading Philosophy. She said, ‘I am really grateful for the support my teachers gave me and I believe that this enabled me to get the results necessary for UCL; without their dedication to their subjects and students, I am sure I would be in a different position.’

Lottie will be pursuing a STEM pathway, with A* grades in Physics and Mathematics and A grades in Biology and AS Further Mathematics. She will be studying Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London. Lottie said, ‘I am so thankful to the teachers at Tudor for their relentless support and genuine interest in our futures, not just throughout the last two years, but ever since I joined the school in Year 7. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to come here; it has been the best possible experience and I wouldn’t change it for anything!’

These stories reflect not only the outstanding teaching at Tudor Hall, but also the breadth of interests of our girls, whose experience here has enabled them to find and follow their own pathway.

Mayfield

Mayfield, the leading Catholic independent day and boarding school for girls, is celebrating another impressive set of A level results, with a 100% pass rate and over half the grades awarded being A* or A.
Mayfield’s Upper Sixth girls have secured places at prestigious universities throughout the UK and abroad, including Oxford, Bristol, Durham, Exeter, Imperial, UCL and King’s College, with three girls heading to North America to study, including local girl Sophie, from Groombridge, who has been awarded a Rowing Scholarship by the University of Iowa.
In keeping with the school’s educational ethos the girls are going to study a wide range of courses including Animation, Architecture, Engineering, Fine Art, Law and Politics, and Psychology, in addition to traditional subjects such as English, Modern Languages and the Sciences.
The most popular A level subjects were Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Psychology, whilst all nine students taking Ceramics achieved an A* or an A. These included Amelia from Tunbridge Wells, who studied Maths and Psychology alongside Ceramics. She said: “I found Maths the hardest subject at junior school, I never would have believed I would take it for A Level and that’s all thanks to Mayfield. I am incredibly proud of my results and getting into the University of Cardiff to study Architecture.”
Yueshi, a talented musician and international boarder, achieved three A*s in History of Art, English and History and will be going on to study History at Oxford, where she has also been awarded a Choral Scholarship. Yueshi said: “I am absolutely thrilled with my results, and I would like to thank Mayfield for all the opportunities that it has offered to me along the way to cultivate my passions. I can’t wait to embark on this new journey at Oxford doing the things that I love!” Ines, from Tenterden, also achieved a place at Oxford, where she will be studying French and Beginners Russian. She said: “I remember being so excited when I first received my academic scholarship to Mayfield in Year 9, and it has given me so many opportunities as well as the confidence to apply to Oxford.”
Charlotte, from Tunbridge Wells, and Mia, from Crowborough, both secured places to study Sciences at Imperial, continuing Mayfield’s tradition of encouraging girls to forge careers in STEM, a traditionally male dominated arena. Mia, who was awarded Gold in the UK Chemistry Olympiad competition earlier this year, achieved three A*s and an A. She said: “I am so pleased that my hard work led me to achieve the results that I did and am very grateful for all the support provided by my teachers. I am looking forward to pursuing my favourite subject, Chemistry, at Imperial in September!” Charlotte, who achieved four A*s and is a long-standing member of Mayfield’s STEM club, will be studying Physics at Imperial. She said: “Mayfield has been invaluable to me, in terms of academic support, activity opportunities as well as making lifelong friendships. Thank you!”
Head Jonathan Forster commented: ”At Mayfield we believe in creating an environment in which students are happy so that they can flourish in the world beyond school. This year’s results are testament not only to this ethos, but also to our students’ and teachers’ hard work and commitment. I am so proud of their success and confident they will embrace the next stage of their journey with enthusiasm, confidence and determination. I look forward to following their progress.

Bryanston

It was congratulations for Bryanston’s departing A2 year group today (17 August) as they received their A level results – with six out of ten grades awarded the top marks of A*, A or B and 80% securing their first choice of university place, despite the impact of Covid-19.

Deputy Head Academic, Mark Deketelaere commented: “This year group went into these exams without any formal exam experience, having missed GCSEs two years ago. These grades reflect the effort our A2 pupils put in over that time and I am proud of the way they have approached them, and of the whole school community that has supported them.”

Pupils will also be leaving Bryanston to continue their studies at universities in the UK and overseas, Music Conservatoires and Art Schools, as well as starting a degree apprenticeship at the BBC, which emphasises the growing interest in alternative pathways among Sixth Formers.

University places gained include Oxford, Imperial, Edinburgh, UCL, Exeter, Bristol and Durham as well as overseas including Harvard, Berkeley, Columbia, Boston in the USA and IE Madrid, ESCP Paris and Amsterdam in Europe.

“Our pupils achieved A level results in keeping with pre-pandemic levels, indeed better than our 2019 results, “ added Mark Deketelaere. “We also had some fantastic individual outcomes for Misha T-B and Ella W who gained four A* grades – those top grades coming in a range of subjects from the sciences and maths to the liberal arts and humanities.”

Bryanston’s A level results (57% of grades awarded at A*, A or B), follow this year’s IB results where pupils achieved an average score of 32 points, surpassing the global average of 30 points.

King’s Ely

HARDWORKING King’s Ely students have once again achieved places at their first-choice universities and institutions having gained a stellar set of A-Level grades.

Teachers and staff at King’s Ely Sixth Form are especially proud of the Year 13 cohort’s results, since COVID measures during their GCSE year meant that it was their first time sitting public examinations.

This year, a fifth of A-Level results achieved at King’s Ely are the top A* grade, almost half are A*-A, and three-quarters are grades A*-B. The overall pass rate is 99 %. Almost all candidates aiming for university this year gained places at their first-choice institutions.

These results not only reflect the 94 students’ determination and resilience, but also their teachers’ and mentors’ expertise and commitment for them to succeed. As a marker of their all-round, enriched education, King’s Ely pupils will be going on to study subjects as diverse as Engineering to Acting, and Medicine to Fashion Design – at universities and institutions, not just in the UK, but across the globe.

Jonathan Shaw, Head of King’s Ely Senior, said: “We are extremely proud of our Year 13s, who have achieved some excellent A-Level grades. Results Day is always approached with a little trepidation, but for this year’s cohort there was the additional pressure of sitting public exams for the first time, due to the cancellation of their GCSE exams in 2021. We are therefore particularly delighted with today’s results. Many of our students have exceeded their own personal expectations. Above all, they are a delightful cohort who will leave King’s Ely with the character, confidence, and sense of responsibility to make a difference wherever they go next. Congratulations to our pupils for their hard work and determination, to our teachers for their preparation and guidance, and to our parents for their unwavering support.”

All three King’s Ely students holding Oxbridge offers achieved the top grades to take up their places this year – Alice Wallace at St Hilda’s, Oxford to study Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Ben Collier at Peterhouse, Cambridge to study Medicine, and PiaoPiao Li to study Philosophy at Magdalene, Cambridge.

Twenty-three students achieved all A*-A grades – Thomas Bateman, William Biggs, Thomas Coates, Ben Collier, Joseph Coppin, Elliot Dickson, Georgia Gordon, Finlay Griffiths, Freddie Hills, Jonathan Iles, Fidel Lau, PiaoPiao Li, Alexandra Marshall, Connor Marshall, Daniel Millard, Emily Morris, Lauren Peck, Sophia Peters, James Schoenberg, Kathryn Snell, Eloise Suiter, Alice Wallace, and Haoxuan Xu.

Alice Wallace, who achieved three A* grades, has been at King’s Ely since joining Nursery in 2008. She said: “I am so pleased with my results! I did work hard, but it still feels quite surreal to have got three A*s. I have been at King’s for fifteen years so there is so much I am going to miss about the school. King’s has such an infectious spirit and everyone is so supportive and encouraging of each other.”

Thomas Bateman, who also achieved three A* grades, is one of only twenty-eight students out of around four-thousand applicants to secure a place at the Manchester School of Theatre to study Acting. Thomas, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 3, said: “I am so happy with my grades, and so excited for Manchester! I aspire to be a professional actor and this dream is now a step closer to becoming a reality, thanks to the huge amount of support I have received throughout my years at King’s. Everyone here is incredible, especially the Drama Department. I would not be who I am today without King’s.”

William Biggs also joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 3. He achieved three A*s and an A, and will be studying Natural Sciences at the University of Bath. William said: “I feel like I did put in a lot of effort and hard work, but I still feel incredibly lucky to achieve grades as high as I have. I am not entirely sure what I want to do career-wise yet, but I think it will probably be in scientific research. King’s is such a nurturing and enriching place to study. The extra-curricular scene here is huge, which I think is important. I feel that the school has provided me with everything I need to flourish.”

As well as offering almost thirty different A-Level courses, King’s Ely Sixth Form also enables pupils to study vocational Level 3 Diploma qualifications in Business Studies, and Food and Nutrition. This year, eleven students completed the two-year Level 3 Diploma in Business Studies, achieving five Distinction* and six Distinction grades. Two Year 12 pupils also completed the one-year course and achieved Distinctions.

Approximately a quarter of this year’s Year 13 cohort also completed Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) in addition to their A-Level subjects, which are equivalent to 50% of an A-Level. Almost half of the grades achieved were A*, and around three-quarters of grades were A*-A.

John Attwater, Principal of King’s Ely, said: “This is a challenging year for students with much more competition for university places and less latitude in A-Level grades than we have seen since 2019. In this national context, it is great to see such all-round success, both among the academic high-fliers and also the exciting options achieved by those who were most disrupted or affected by COVID lockdowns during their GCSE years.”

Above and Beyond: Leighton Park’s A*-B Grades Exceed Pre-Pandemic Achievements

Leighton Park School’s Sixth Formers were celebrating this morning as the top A Level grades for A*-B reached 57%, 2% above the 2019 pre-Covid levels.

Matthew Judd, Head, commented “Set against the context of the national picture where the results are back to pre-pandemic level we are delighted that our grades have continued to improve. One of the things that thrills me is the diversity of course that our students are proceeding to, everything from Fashion to Pure Maths. I have got a keen sense that students here have chosen courses because they want to be a force for good and I look forward to seeing them carrying the values of the school forwards. As ever on results day it is wonderful to see so many happy faces.”

Jenny Powlesland, Assistant Head (Teaching & Learning), was equally jubilant: “It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate with so many students the culmination of their efforts and resilience over the last two years.”

Harry McNeill was overjoyed with his A*AA and an A for his EPQ which secure his place to read History and Politics at Warwick University in the Autumn. “I felt quite stressed yesterday and I knew the marking was going to be harder but I’m pretty happy today!” he grinned. Matthew Wheeler (3As and A EPQ) concurred, “I’m very happy for sure. The grade boundaries were higher of course so I was a bit nervous; it really hit me last night. I’m glad it’s over now and that I know I’ve got into Bristol to do Economics and Finance.”

Both Harry and Matthew joined Leighton Park in the Sixth Form and are enthusiastic about the experience. “It was a challenge adjusting to A Level but it was quicker to settle in than I expected; it’s very friendly and the staff are really supportive.” explained Matthew.

Dan McDermott’s mother, Sarah, was also pleased that she chose Leighton Park for her son’s Sixth Form education as his grades see him bound for London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a degree in Production Arts. “The difference has been phenomenal. He has had so many opportunities here and he’s completely changed direction because of his experiences. Which he’d never have got elsewhere; I’m so, so pleased.”

Creativity from the Arts shines through in the Music Department too with four students taking up places at the UK’s highly competitive Music Conservatoires.

Other students are embracing the freedom of a gap year with Connie Say headed to South Africa to work on her Field Guides Association of Southern Africa qualification over two camps followed by a spot on the New York Times Internship programme; one of only 25 offered worldwide! Connie is still deciding between English or History for her university application, two of the School’s highest scoring subjects with with A*-B grades of 83% for English Literature (83%) and 78% for History (78%). Other top scoring subjects include DT (100%), Business (79%) and Economics (72%) at A*-B.

Leighton Park’s success at Key Stage 5 is recognized by the Government’s league tables for Sixth Form Academic Progress. The latest figures show Leighton Park to be the top performing school in Berkshire and 27th in England for academic progress, one of only eight schools nationally to appear in the top 100 every year since the league tables began. Leighton Park was also a Finalist in the prestigious Times Educational Supplement (TES) Awards for Independent Senior School of the Year 2023.

His housemaster, Mark Speyers, said, “Conor is without doubt one of the most intelligent young men I have had the pleasure of working with. On many occasions he has far exceeded the requirements of the academic programme. Outstanding as this is, this feat is even more remarkable as Conor is a year younger than his peers, having been fast tracked in his early school years in recognition of his intellectual ability.”

Conor is also an international level swimmer. In July 2022, he represented Great Britain at the Youth Olympic Festival in Slovakia. After clinching three individual titles at the Somerset County Swimming Championships in February this year, Conor was selected into the prestigious Swim England National Youth Development Camp, where he trained alongside the best swimmers for his age group in the country. Millfield offers you so much and I have really enjoyed music in addition to swimming, being on a 20 hour a week swimming schedule. Millfield provides you with the opportunity to grow as an individual and the friends I have made I really feel that I will have for life. I feel sad that my time at Millfield has come to a close but I’m happy that I have had the chance to do all the things I have done. “We are ambitious for every one of our pupils and it is fantastic to be able to recognise their success on results day. For this cohort, they have endured unprecedented circumstances having missed out on their GCSE public examinations due to the pandemic. So, it is a testament to their resilience and hard work in addition to the dedication and commitment of Repton’s teaching and examination staff that our pupils have achieved the results that will allow them to fulfil their aspirations beyond Repton.”

Millfield Prep

Two outstanding Millfield swimmers on World Class programmes aiming for the Olympics next year, have received their A level results today.

Solomon Williams, who joined Millfield Prep in Year 8, is a boarder from Buckinghamshire and achieved an A* in Maths, an A in Further Maths, an A* in Physics and an A* in Chemistry, one of the schools top achievers. Solomon has represented Millfield in Maths, Physics, and languages Olympiads. In addition to his academics, Solomon is a talented swimmer having won national medals and has been selected to represent both Great Britain and Wales at International competitions.

Alex Painter, who joined Millfield Prep in Year 4, is a day student from Somerton. He took A levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry whilst excelling in his swimming and claiming the European and British Junior Champion titles. He has also gained multiple British age group titles.

Both swimmers will continue training at Millfield with the Millfield Performance Squad. The newly formed Performance Squad is designed for student athletes aspiring for podium success on the senior international stage, offering them the chance to utilise Millfield’s swimming, coaching and facilities.

Alex and Solomon are looking to utilise this provision to fulfil their 2024 Paris Olympic ambitions. Alex said “Getting to train with the world’s best every day allows you to truly see the skill and dedication required to compete at an elite level. It’s inspiring to be able to race on the same team as Olympic and World Championship athletes. Having them here is a testament to the coaching and facilities at Millfield.”

Alex said, “My entire competitive swimming career has been at Millfield from Year 4 to Upper Sixth. Swimming at Millfield isn’t just about the short-term gains and success but looking at the bigger picture and providing us with the skills required to achieve in any field. I am constantly inspired by former and current Olympians from Millfield along with the committed world-class coaches and physios at school who all aim to maximise my output. We’re also very fortunate to be training every day in a 50m pool and have access to several gyms.” Alex was able to balance his academics whilst competing. He said, “During my final A level year, my swim coach, housemaster, and teachers were in constant touch to balance my international competition commitments with my academic studies. I was set additional catch-up materials as well as extra classroom sessions in the lead-up to the summer exams. This gave me the confidence that I could give both my training and my A levels the appropriate level of attention needed, so I didn’t fall behind.”

Solomon, who is also hoping to train at Bath University, said, “The calibre of coaching and facilities at Millfield is outstanding and there is a unique sense of community, everyone is supportive of one another and stimulated to bring the best out of themselves. It has been a massive privilege to have been part of such an inspiring environment.” In addition to swimming, Solomon can often be found in the music department, playing piano, violin, and the saxophone. He said, “The culture in the music department is unparalleled in the amount of enthusiasm displayed on a daily basis by both staff and students. Music has taken huge precedence in my Sixth Form life.” Solomon had to balance his swimming, academics, and music. He said, “The relationship between sport and academics at Millfield is seamless with a special emphasis on free-flowing communication between students and staff which I have always found helpful. In addition to everyday logistical aids such as gym scheduling during free periods, I was always able to join catch-up workshops for missed lessons after competing.”

Director of Swimming Euan Dale praised the students saying, “Solomon and Alex are gifted individuals, we are so proud to have watched them grow into the remarkable young men that they are today. We can’t wait to follow and support them in their journey to bigger and better things beyond Millfield.”

Alex and Solomon will be following in the footsteps of Old Millfieldians, James Guy, Duncan Goodhew, Mark Foster, Brodie Williams, Kieran Bird, Cameron Kurle and Suzanna Hext.

Commenting on the 2023 A Level achievements, College Head, Kathy Crewe-Read said, “We know that academic qualifications are the gateway into many of the universities and careers our students will wish to enter. As such they are a prime focus for us at the College.”

“The dedication and resilience shown by our Upper Sixth students this year has been fantastic. We have seen exceptionally strong results across STEM subjects, Classics, and languages, which have seen high percentages of students achieve A grades or above.”

Crewe-Read continues, “We are aware that qualifications alone will not suffice for a life fully lived. Qualities, human qualities of decency and kindness are also a large part of the ticket to success in all fields. These values are formed at home and strengthened throughout the time at school with us. Together, qualifications and qualities are what an education for today and tomorrow must deliver, and we are proud that our Upper Sixth students are leaving us as a shining example of this.”

Brighton College

Stars In Their Eyes

A* is the most common A-level grade at Brighton College again this year, with a pre-Covid record-breaking number of 338 A* grades.

In all, there were 69 pupils with 3 A* grades, 25 with 4 A*s, and five with 5 A*s. The proportion of grades at A*-B is almost identical to that achieved in 2019 before Covid when Brighton College was ranked 3rd in the UK by The Sunday Times.

Top performer was Mike Nekrasov with 7 A*s who now heads off to Oxford to study Maths and Computer Science. Also celebrating is Stan Norman with 5 A* grades. A keen cricketer, representing Jersey, he is heading off to Cambridge to study Natural Sciences. Others with 5 A*s include Thomas Penner, Ben Becarevic, Andy Tam and Tommy Zhang.

Last year, Vlad Pokoievych and Vlad Minenko fled the war in Ukraine, eventually finding a place in England as one of 23 boys and girls given free places at Brighton College. Today, Vlad P won a place at Bath University to study Business, with grades at A*ABC, and Vlad M at Manchester University, with grades A*AB to study Mechanical Engineering.

Among the many heading off to top universities to study Science, Medicine and Engineering, there are plenty of others following their own very different pathways  – Ben Moon, who achieved 3 A*s and is now off to study Musical Theatre at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts; Alex Reeves-Bonoldi who joined Brighton on its Opening Doors scholarship and is now off to Cambridge to read History and Spanish, with 4 A*s to his name. Hermione Boyle achieved 4 A*s and 1 A, and heads to Cambridge to read Medicine.  Head of School, Sarah Keast-Butler, heads to Cambridge with 3 A*s and 1 A – in her case, to read Geography. Cambridge remains the single most common university destination over the last five years for Brighton College pupils. There has also been a noticeable increase in applications to North America, with Sam Patterson (with 4 A*s) among a significant cohort heading off to the USA, in his case Duke University.

Head Master, Richard Cairns, is delighted: “I am so proud of our Sixth Form leavers. This was one of the most diverse year groups we have ever had, containing as it did many pupils on our Opening Doors scholarship programme as well as several of the 23 Ukrainian refugees who joined us on similar scholarships. Aside from this, it also includes pupils with such diverse interests – from those aiming to become professional sportsmen and sportswomen in the footsteps of Marcus Smith (who represents England in the World Cup next month) to artists, engineers, dancers, musicians, historians and computer scientists. I am delighted for all of them. They have had a tough five years through the pandemic and deserve every congratulation.”

Brentwood School

Despite some foreboding media headlines and a national reset to 2019 results that meant over 70,000 fewer A*/A grades awarded overall, Brentwood School’s A Level and BTEC students had much to smile about today as they achieved an excellent set of results that built on the success of their peers who received their IB Diplomas back in July.

It was a nerve-wracking morning for a Sixth Form cohort who had their GCSEs cancelled in 2021. However, the Class of 2023 not only outperformed the 2019 benchmark in terms of academic results, they did so alongside a wide range of extraordinary co-curricular successes, illustrating the school’s commitment to a holistic education. Many top performers included standout musicians and sports stars.

Among the many individual stories of success was Academic and Music Scholar, Benjamin O’Riordan, who has certainly embraced all Brentwood has to offer. Benjamin, a Performing Arts stalwart, secured A*A*A and his place at St John’s College, Cambridge to study History. A Bursary award holder, he had thrown himself into the co-curricular life of the school: “This school has done this for me and the bursary has transformed my life,” he said. Benjamin was off to celebrate with his grandparents who had ‘the champagne on ice’.

Proud mum Michelle O’Riordan echoed Benjamin’s words: “He has been very lucky to be here and it has been an incredible seven years. During lockdown I could hear his teachers on Zoom and I realised just how special the teaching at this school was.”

Benjamin is one of four students heading to Oxford or Cambridge Universities. Henry O’Hara, (A*A*A) is off to Wadham College, Oxford, to study Medicine and Surgery, and Jacob Stephen, (A*A*A*) will read Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, joining his brother who is already at Cambridge studying Law. Jacob thanked Chemistry teacher and Director of Studies, Mr Endlar, who ‘helped Chemistry finally click’ and was a ‘constant support’.

Joining Benjamin and Jacob at Cambridge is Abigail Rice, whose place at Queens’ College, Cambridge to study Economics was confirmed following July’s IB results.

Overall, 41.4% of A Level results were graded A* or A, whilst almost three-quarters were graded A*, A or B and over 80% of students secured a place at their first-choice university or degree apprenticeship course.

Other top performers included Sienna Singh with 4 A*s and a confirmed place at Warwick to read Economics. Sienna, who is looking to a career in finance or banking, fared much better than expected: “I don’t know how that happened,” she joked. Emma Willy, who has been at Brentwood since the age of 3, was awarded 3A*s and her first-choice spot at Bath (also reading Economics). She thanked her teachers for their encouragement, additional support sessions and for ‘going the extra mile’. Brentwood School Equestrian team stalwart Sophie Philpot (A*A*A) is off to Exeter to study Business and Management, and Tabitha Williams (A*A*A) will be reading Veterinary Science at Bristol, a course which not only requires a high academic threshold but many many hours of practical dedication.

The School’s BTEC Extended Diploma grades were, once again, exceptional. Students who follow this pathway at Brentwood study either Business or Sport and the qualification is worth the equivalent of three A Level grades. Alex Bagley achieved the equivalent of A*A*A* at A Level and a place at Plymouth to study Physiotherapy. Also proving that BTEC qualifications are not just a gateway to Sport or Business pathways, Iqra Malik (who achieved the equivalent of A*AA at A Level) is using her Business BTEC as a stepping stone to study Architecture. All 19 BTEC Extended Diploma students secured A Level equivalent grades of AAA or better.

At the heart of Brentwood School’s success is its unwavering commitment to providing a well-rounded educational experience that extends beyond the classroom. Hockey goalkeeper Molly Smith, who secured A Level grades of ABB and a place at Loughborough to study Sport & Exercise Science, personifies this holistic approach: Molly, who turned 18 yesterday, was unable to collect her results in person as she was en route to Germany with the England U21 side as part of their build up to November’s World Cup.

Classical guitarist extraordinaire Tom Hodgkinson (a name to remember for the future) was awarded AAA and is heading to one of the world’s leading conservatoires, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in Austria. Tom, like many of the Music alumni, was headed straight back into rehearsals for the department’s upcoming music tour to Swanage.

Fellow musician, Scholar and Bursary award holder Sammi Li, (A*A*A B) whose recent performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in Brentwood Cathedral left her audience mesmerised, is off to read Maths and Philosophy at Bristol. Sammi, who has also been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship in Music at Bristol, said her bursary had changed her life. ”I would not have been able to do all these amazing things, being part of the community that is the Music Department, making music and spreading joy.”

Dance Scholar Penelope Wood (ABB), who was in the enviable position of fielding offers from three prestigious Arts/Dance colleges will be tip tapping her way to the Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts to continue in Musical Theatre.

Brentwood CCF Army cadets Lewis Harknett and Scott Adeyinka will enjoy financial and career support through university thanks to a prestigious Army Officer Scholarship securing them a sought-after place at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Lewis, (ABB) will now read Politics at the University of Liverpool, and is one step closer to his dream of joining either the Grenadier Guards or the Parachute Regiment. Scott – who is also a member of the British Kendo team – was delighted with his Sports BTEC Distinction which has paved the way to Kent to study Politics and International Relations with a year in Japan. He wanted to thank Head of Upper Sixth, Mrs Roberts, who helped him swap from A Levels to BTEC and ‘allowed me to do something I really enjoy’.

Eight students will be taking up much sought-after Apprenticeships at institutions ranging from Amazon to Barclays, including Olivia Argent (A*AA) who will be joining the Markel Insurance Group.

Top rugby player Benjamin Mills (AAB) will extend his sports knowledge at Exeter by studying Exercise and Sport Sciences, while cross country runner Daniel Peters (A*A*A) is looking forward to Economics with Politics at Bath University. At a time of much debate regarding the contribution of The Arts to a holistic education (and society in general) writers Katie Hackett (A*AB) and Taaliyah Foster (AAA) will hone their skills at Exeter studying English and Creative Writing.

Headmaster Michael Bond said: “Whilst the 2023 exam results mark a much-publicised return to pre-pandemic grade distributions at a national level, our outgoing Upper Sixth students have shown that it is possible to secure outstanding academic results whilst achieving remarkable success beyond the classroom across a wide range of different pursuits. It is very much our belief that co-curricular and academic endeavour breeds overall success, whilst our focus on the life skills of teamship, problem-solving and resilience has also served our students well and will continue to do so far beyond their school years. But perhaps most pleasing of all is how this year group have worked collaboratively and in support of each other – at a time when teenagers are often maligned in the media, our Upper Sixth students have personified the school’s values of virtue, learning and manners in the way they have conducted themselves during the past few years. They have been a credit to the school and we are delighted to celebrate with them today.’

This year, 23% of its grades are A*-A, 57% are A*-B, and 80% are A*-C with 42% of its students achieving at least one A* or A. This is none the more impressive as this year Ofqual, the exams watchdog, announced that tougher grade boundaries would be imposed, lowering results nationally.

Of the 123 students in its Year 13 cohort, 106 students applied to university and, at the time of writing, 102 have places confirmed at university. The breadth of destinations of its A-Level students shows the expansive range of interests of its students. Its students have been successful in gaining places all over the UK, including Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Belfast, Sheffield, Loughborough, Bristol and Manchester. Its students will take up places on a variety of courses, from Paramedic Science, Physics, Aviation Management, Economics, Philosophy to Primary Education, Musical Theatre and Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Some exceptional examination results for its students will see them attend, amongst others, Exeter to study Clinical Psychology, Bath to study Psychology, Southampton to study Human Geography, Birmingham to study Medicine and Oxford to study Earth Sciences.

Indeed, Camille Duff is heading to the University of Exeter to study Clinical Psychology after achieving an A* in Psychology, A in Sociology, A in Geography and B in Ancient History. Camille commented, ‘Sixth Form has been an amazing experience for me as I have formed many friendships and have learned so much about subjects I am truly interested in […] [My results] really show my hard work has paid off and that my interest in my subjects was a key asset in my achievement. Burford School has shaped me as a student and I am so proud to be leaving in such as positive way’.

Meanwhile, Freya Hickman is heading to the University of Southampton to study Human Geography after achieving an A in Geography, A in Sociology and B in Biology. Freya commented, ‘I was so happy when opening my results this morning and finding out I had achieved my place […] Sixth Form at Burford has set me up perfectly for my next steps and I have loved the experience. The support has been amazing, and I feel ready to start my degree and see what university has to offer!’

Other outstanding individual results include those of Marcus Renwick who achieved an A* in English Literature and Language, A in History, A in Sociology and A in Economics and Connor Bracey who achieved an A* in Economics, A in Mathematics and B in Physics.

Mr Albrighton, Headteacher, commented, ‘We knew that students were going to perform well this year, but with Ofqual announcing that tougher grade boundaries were to be imposed we could not predict with confidence quite how well. I am delighted that our students have achieved such a strong set of results and are now set for their next step after Burford School. Today’s A-Level results are not just the outcome of students’ efforts in the exam hall, but the culmination of two years of endeavour within and beyond the classroom, with the support of their parents and carers and teachers.’

Mrs Brown, Head of Sixth Form, added, ‘I am pleased that the vast majority of our students, on receiving their results today, are now able to embark on their chosen pathway after Burford, whether that be to university, an apprenticeship or employment. Parents and carers have been incredibly supportive throughout their children’s time in Sixth Form and teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students have had every opportunity to reach for their potential. The Sixth Form Team and I wish all our students the best of luck as they begin their next chapter after Burford.’

Queen Margaret’s School for Girls

Future-Proof A Level Results for York All-Girls School

Today’s A Level results prove just how important it is for schools to be forward thinking, says Head of Queen Margaret’s School for Girls, Sue Baillie. After receiving excellent results this morning, students from the all-girls school in York will be going on to study cutting-edge courses including Games and Virtual Reality at Glasgow, Electrical Engineering at Southampton and Biochemistry at University College London. “We’re delighted that so many of our girls have been successful in securing their first choice university course today at the country’s best universities. QM girls will take up places at many of the prestigious Russell Group universities, including Exeter, Sheffield and Manchester”, says Mrs Baillie.

People often assume that all-girls schools are traditional and out of touch, but modern and progressive girls schools like Queen Margaret’s are far removed from this stereotype, they actively create an environment which empowers independent young women to do and be whatever they aspire to. “Their time at Queen Margaret’s and the university places they have secured today will equip our girls for careers that might not even exist yet. The future is brightest for those with open, unfettered, socially and individually responsible minds” says Mrs Baillie.

Student Ella Conyers is celebrating today after achieving A*A*A – she studied Fine Art, Mathematics and Spanish, demonstrating just how multitalented the school’s students are and the importance of individual attention. Ella will go on to Leeds Arts University to study an Art Foundation course.

Ella’s father praised the school today; “Ella’s incredible results are the icing on the cake; with QM’s help and nurturing, our three daughters have all left the school as funny, confident, well-rounded and engaging individuals. We would like to thank all the staff for their amazing input over the years.”

Despite pre-pandemic grades being restored this year, and the fact that they couldn’t sit their GCSEs, today’s A Level recipients have wowed with their creativity. It was a clean sweep of 100% grades A*-C in Music, Theatre Studies, Fine Art, Graphic Communications, Photography and in languages. “In a world of technological revolution, most clearly demonstrated by the rise of AI, we
cannot underestimate the importance of creativity. It is a skill young people need for the future
which AI simply cannot replicate” says Mrs Baillie.

Student Lauren Newbould, who has achieved her goal of studying an apprenticeship in Dental Nursing said “I’ve loved being a Sixth Former at QM, especially all the support I got from my teachers”.

September will see a brand new cohort of Sixth Form students embark upon their choice of A Level and BTEC courses, as well as a full timetable of exciting enrichment activities at the school; Head’s Awards are available to new students who join the Sixth Form next month.

Shebbear College

Shebbear College Class of 2023 Celebrate University Offers on A-Level Results Day

Upper Sixth students at Shebbear College are celebrating an excellent set of A-Level and BTEC results this morning, having achieved highly across the board. The vast majority have gained a place at their first-choice university destination with 42% going onto Russell Group universities.

The Class of 2023 will be going on to study an impressive range of degree subjects – from STEM subjects Medicine, Veterinary Science, Physics, Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence and Mechanical Engineering to English, Human Geography, Law, Business & Finance and Real Estate.

Students will be taking up places at prestigious universities including UCL, Kings College London, the University of Nottingham, Cardiff University and the University of Bristol. Meanwhile, others have chosen to take a gap year, with plans for exciting opportunities including a wildlife conservation course in Namibia.

Whilst many students travelled into school to open their envelopes, others joined their friends remotely on video calls from destinations around the world including Bali and Hong Kong!

Charlotte Odlin, from Holsworthy, found out this morning that she had achieved AAA in Biology, Chemistry and Spanish and has gained a place at her first choice of university; she will be studying Medicine at the highly acclaimed Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) in Canterbury in September.

‘I’m very happy as I’ve done better than I expected, and I’ve got into my first choice of uni! I’ve also had an offer from Cardiff but I think my heart is set on KMMS as it’s one of the newer medical schools and is really innovative.”

Charlotte has juggled her academic studies with a plethora of other interests and responsibilities during her time in the Sixth Form. A talented musician in both piano and french horn, she has also played lead roles in the whole school musical productions of ‘Grease’ in 2022 and ‘Into The Woods’ in 2023. On top of this she has been an excellent role model as Head of Way House, and a keen sportswoman.

“My music really helped me to relax during A-Levels so that I didn’t feel like I was constantly studying! I’d definitely say to anyone taking their exams in future that having a way to wind down – whether that be through music, reading, sport or anything else you enjoy – can really help to manage the stress of exams.”

Another pupil to have excelled is Kieran Lewis, from Langtree, who gained AAA in Computer Science, Maths and Physics and will be reading Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence at the University of Nottingham.

“I’m happy with my grades – I’ve got into my first choice of university and I’m looking forward to starting. My course includes a year in industry which should be really interesting.”

Singer Songwriter Mitzi Irish, from Bude, has also gained a place at her first choice of university and will be studying English Language & Linguistics at King’s College London. Alongside life as a uni student, Mitzi, who has already released two singles, will be continuing with her musical career in London.

Heads of School Jack Hancock from Bideford and Roy Poon from Hong Kong are also celebrating places at their first choice of universities and will be reading Physics at King’s College London and Applied Medical Science at UCL respectively.

Charlie Jenkins, Head at Shebbear College, said “Congratulations to all our students who have worked so hard to achieve these impressive results, particularly as they have never sat a public examination before. This is a year group with a diverse range of interests and talents, and it is fantastic to see that they will be fulfilling their ambitions, whether that be at university, a gap year or a career. I am very proud of the way this year group have worked as a team to lead the College and wish them all the best for the future

I must also say a huge thank you to all of their teachers who have been a huge part of the successes that we are celebrating today. As a small school, our teachers are able to focus on each individual during their Sixth Form journey in order to prepare them for life beyond school and we can see real evidence of that today.”

St Joseph’s College Ipswich

Celebratory Atmosphere at St Joseph’s College Ipswich

With an average UCAS points score of 128, delighted St Joseph’s College students are heading off to top academic destinations and to take up a myriad of exciting opportunities – from millinery to world travel. The points tally equates to ABB at A-level and reflects impressive results both on academic A-level courses and on applied vocational courses in Engineering, Digital Media, Sport Coaching & Development, and Business.

Half of the students came away with at least one A*/A grade or equivalent and three-quarters of A-level students achieved A*- C grades across their studies. The College’s Deputy Principal, Mr Sacha Cinnamond, who heads up the school’s academic provision, said the students’ breadth of attainment was particularly impressive, with a number combining top-level sporting triumphs alongside academic success.

‘These impressive and hard-working young people have put clear blue sky between themselves and the difficulties of the pandemic years. It is easy to overlook the fact that their studies could have been severely impacted by the Covid outbreak, but their tenacity has seen them through. We look forward to hearing great things as they move on to the next step of their journey, whether in education or at points across the globe as they take time out to work and travel,’ he said.

Self-describing as ‘St Joseph’s biggest fan’, Stan Warner exemplifies the benefits of combined courses. Stan achieved a triple Starred Distinction in BTEC Sport and added an A-level in Business Studies. He is not letting the grass grow under his feet but heading straight into a marketing apprenticeship before setting off to Thailand, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, giving this rugby star plenty of scope to keep up the sport.

Two of St Jo’s national cup-winning girls’ football squad also aced the art of combining academic work and sporting attainment. Team captain Emily Bates is heading to Loughborough University to read Psychology, armed with Geography A* and Psychology A at A-level, an A* in her EPQ and Double Distinction * in Sport. Teammate Zofia Szczech will be joining her at Loughborough to read History. Zofia was awarded A* in both English Literature and Psychology and an A in History. To make the most of her time while she was juggling study and football commitments, she hit the laptop on journeys to and from school.

In addition to my A Level studies, I had a great time participating in the Psychology Club and volunteering at a local primary school.’.

Badminton School’s recently appointed Head, Mrs Jessica Miles, was delighted with the success of this year’s cohort: “For a Year Group who were perhaps more affected than any other by the disruption caused to their education by the pandemic, not least because they missed the experience of sitting their GCSEs, they can hold their heads high and take real pride in these results. In my short time here, I have witnessed this Year Group’s excellent work ethic and I have also seen a group of young women who are fun, kind, brave and clearly ready to move on to the next stage of their academic journeys, whether that be studying Neuroscience at Nottingham or Civil Engineering at Imperial.  I know that they would want to join me in thanking all the staff at Badminton who have supported, inspired and encouraged them during their time here.”

Jeremy Walker, Head Master says: “I congratulate all of our Upper Sixth pupils on their results today. Their perseverance through GCSE courses during the global pandemic was inspiring and they have gone on to flourish at Sixth Form. The pupils and their teachers have worked extremely hard and have achieved a huge amount. The results they have earned today are a fitting reward for all they have put in over the last two years.

They have combined their academic studies with a vast range of co-curricular interests and have achieved success in sport, music, drama, journalism, debating and so much more. The skills and interests they have developed whilst at St Peter’s will, I am sure, lead them to confidence and fulfilment in their lives after school. As well as the academic results they have achieved today, I am very proud of the values the pupils in the Upper Sixth have developed, in particular their compassion for others, their endurance and resilience through the toughest of challenges and their hope and optimism for the future. This combined with the lifelong friendships they will have made in their time at St Peter’s will give them strength for the years ahead. I wish them the best of luck for the future and look forward to hearing of their many successes.

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate

Queen Ethelburga’s Celebrates Sixth Form Results for 2023

Students, staff and parents, from the award-winning North Yorkshire independent schools which make up Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, are celebrating today, following exceptional achievements on A Level and BTEC Results Day 2023.

QE has two senior schools as well as their prep and middle schools, on their modern, well-equipped campus, which is close to York, Harrogate and Leeds, in Thorpe Underwood. This allows for a high level of personalised care and guidance for all students, and an innovative curriculum model to suit each individual. Across the two schools the combined percentage of A*/A grades at A Level today is 79.4%, with the percentage of BTEC Distinction* and Distinction grades in QE Faculty reaching 76.2%.

This year has seen students aim high with a wide range of first choice university places achieved at Imperial College London, the London School of Economics, Durham, King’s College London, University College London, and Bath, amongst other excellent UK and worldwide universities.

Head of QE Faculty at Queen Ethelburga’s, Lauren Blakeley, said ‘It has been a real privilege to work with our amazing Year 13 students throughout their time at QE, be that over the last two years or in some cases as long as 15 years. They are a remarkable cohort, who we are proud of not just for the academic achievements that we have seen today, but also the people that they have become. Their contributions to the school community have been truly exceptional and we are confident that they will go on to great things in their futures. They have helped to shape the Faculty into the incredible school that it is today, a place where you can excel academically, whilst also having the opportunity to invest time into their other talents and interests. As a team we want to wish them every success in all that they do beyond QE be that at university or on their apprenticeships, and remind them that whether they are in the UK, America, Hong Kong or anywhere else in the world we are still here to offer any support they need as they settle into the next chapter of their lives. Congratulations to you all!”

Head of QE College, Steven Turner, said “I am absolutely delighted with the exceptional achievements of our students on this year’s A Level Results Day. These outstanding results are a testament to the ambition, determination, and dedication of our students, as well as the exceptional support and guidance provided by our dedicated staff and supportive parents. As our students embark on the next phase of their educational journey, they are not only armed with exceptional academic achievements but also equipped with the skills they will need for successful future careers.  During their time in the College, this year’s leavers have made significant contributions to our community, serving as ambassadors, prefects and taking part in the wide and varied co-curricular opportunities available to them at QE, particularly in the creative and performing arts. I look forward to hearing about our students’ continued achievements and contributions in the years to come and wish them every success for their bright futures.”

Principal of the Collegiate, Daniel Machin, said:

‘We are very proud of every single one of our Year 13 students, and I would like to wish each of them well as they continue their educational journey and move on from our two QE senior schools. The fantastic results they have received today will set them up for exceptional futures and we look forward to seeing what they achieve in the coming years. However, we also take immense pride in ensuring our students are prepared for life after school, and it goes far beyond passing examinations. Our diverse mix of 450 local students, along with our UK and overseas boarders, provides social and educational opportunities which reflect the world we live in today and gives the best possible preparation for future success. The students who received their results this week are incredibly positive, aspirational, and well-rounded individuals who take every opportunity to achieve the best they can whilst enjoying life along the way  – our staff wish them well as they head off on the next part of their journey.’

August 17, 2023 – 13:23pm

St Mary’s Calne

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of our 2023 Leavers who, as a year group, have been fondly described as ‘optimistic, enthusiastic and hard working with a strong sense of community spirit’. These qualities have certainly served them well, with 70% of all grades being awarded at A*-A which is the highest since 2011.

This is particularly impressive when considering this year group was unable to sit their GCSEs, so they faced the challenge of A Level examinations without any prior formal examination experience. Congratulations to our 2023 Leavers on their resilience, determination and hard work!

We are also pleased to share the following statistics which reflect the 2023 Leavers outstanding achievements:

  • 42% of students achieved A*-A
  • 94% of students achieved A*-B
  • 40% of students achieved A* for their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)*
  • 88% have been offered places at their first choice of university

Our Leavers’ will be heading off to a variety of leading universities to read a broad range of subjects. Destinations include Cambridge, Oxford, St Andrews, LSE, Durham, Exeter, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Warwick, Bristol, Cardiff, Royal Holloway, and Liverpool.

Courses being studied are wide ranging and include Medicine, Architecture, Veterinary Science, Classics, Dentistry, English Literature, Computational Physics, History, Psychology, Law, Data Science, Philosophy, Chemistry, Sociology, Modern Languages, History of Art, Geography, Liberal Arts, Ancient History, and Anthropology.

Congratulations to all of the students who have worked exceptionally hard to gain their places at these universities.

Our 2023 Head Girl, Sienna Wong, has successfully secured her place to read Veterinary Sciences, while Deputy Head Girls Hannah Thorneloe and Anna Wateridge will both be heading to the University of Durham to read International Relations and Classics respectively.

In addition to Sienna’s success in Veterinary Science, STEM subjects have been particularly strong, with Jemima Back securing a place to study Medicine at Exeter and Judy Fong securing her place to study Dentistry at the University of Birmingham.

Many congratulations to Foundation Scholarship** holder, Beatrix Arnold, who is one of two pupils in the cohort to achieve straight A*s. Beatrix has been awarded a place at Oxford to read Classics.

Twins, Amelie and Celeste Olsoff both have Scotland in their sights, with Amelie securing a place to read Ancient History and Celeste reading International Relations and Modern History both at the University of St Andrews.

Deputy Head Academic of St Mary’s Calne, Mr Michael Smyth commented:

‘We are delighted with this year’s outstanding A Level results which are testament to the hard work of our girls throughout the Sixth Form. In the context of Ofqual’s return to pre-pandemic levels of attainment and the disruption pupils suffered at the start of their studies due to the pandemic itself, I was exceptionally proud of every one of our 2023 Leavers.

Two trends of these results are particularly noteworthy. Firstly, over 70% of grades awarded were A* or A. This is our best performance at A*/A since 2011 and bucked the national trend. It was heavily predicted that there would be a significant squeeze on top grades but, as our unofficial motto, goes ‘Calne Girls Can’ and they certainly did! Secondly, the results were also remarkable in terms of value being added. Objective baseline measures indicate that some pupils outperformed expectations by over two whole grades. On average, pupils achieved 0.8 of a grade higher than expected, which is a school record at A Level.

My thanks go to all the members of staff – academic, pastoral and administrative – who have supported the girls to achieve such excellent results. I truly wish our 2023 Leavers all the very best for their future endeavours where I am sure they will continue to shine.’

Queen Anne’s School

Queen Anne’s School in Reading is exceptionally proud of their outgoing Upper 6 (Year 13) students who have achieved excellent A Level results, including a 5% increase in A* compared to 2019.

With the ‘return to normal’ in formal exams this year, there has been a particularly keen interest in the A Level results. Queen Anne’s School in Reading is exceptionally proud of their outgoing Upper 6 (Year 13) students who have achieved excellent results, including a 5% increase in A* compared to 2019, the last pre-covid benchmark, with 88% A*-C grades and 49% A*-A.

Almost all students have secured places at their first choice of university, with an excellent range including Cambridge, Durham, Bristol, UCL, Cardiff, London School of Economics and many more Russell Group universities. Some are venturing overseas, including the prestigious Berklee College of Music, in Boston, USA.

Head of School, Ms Elaine Purves (photo with Mr Julian Walker, parent) said “I would like to congratulate our incredible Upper 6, who have been so dedicated to school life over their years at Queen Anne’s. From the amazing performance of ‘Legally Blonde’ last November, raising money for Trust House Reading and winning the Round Table Global Youth Award to wild camping in the Cairngorms in aid of the Alexander Devine Hospice, they have been actively engage as young leaders within the school. The students have embodied the dynamic approach to Sixth Form life and learning that stands them in very good stead for the future. I am very proud of all they have accomplished over the years and these well-deserved results.”

Working in STEM fields is something Queen Anne’s students are particularly interested in, so congratulations must go to Henrietta Walker (photo) for gaining A*, A, B and will be studying Medicine at Exeter University and Amelia Shaw (photo) for her A*, A, B and is heading to Nottingham to study Medicine. Amelia’s parents said “we are immensely proud of her, she has worked so hard”.

Teaching staff were also congratulating the girls, including Mr Derek Bottomley, Head of Maths (pictured with Isabel and her mother). Isabel Welch was awarded an A* in Maths, Chemistry and Economics plus an A in her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Isabel’s mother, Mrs Sarah Welch said “she has worked really hard and definitely deserves it!” Isabel will be studying Medicinal Chemistry at Leeds.

The Lower 6 (Year 12) have also had good news, with 8 taking their first Criminology exam, working towards their Level 3 Certificate in Applied Criminology. Over 75% achieved A grades with 100% A-B. These grades count towards their final mark next year. Mr Ben Stephenson, Director of Sixth Form said “I am overjoyed that the hard work and effort put in by the L6 this year are reflected in the grades they’ve achieved. It can be difficult being a cohort in a new course as you don’t have the expertise of older students to ask for advice and they have been brilliant with how they’ve applied themselves. I look forward to seeing what they achieve next year and also the words of wisdom they’ll be able to give our new Lower 6 group.”

There was particular cause for celebration in the Art Department, where 100% achieved A*-B grades. Special mentions must also go to Biology, Dance, Economics, English Literature, Geography, History and Religious Studies, with 100% A*-C grades. Olivia Fancourt (pictured with her mother, Amy) is excited to study Acting at Italia Conti, one of the leading Performing Arts institutions in the country.

Students from St Mary’s Sixth Form are celebrating today after receiving an impressive set of A Level examination results, with 45% of grades awarded at A*- A and 69% at A*- B. Across the board, A level students at St Mary’s achieved a 100% pass rate across all subjects, with strong performances seen in a wide range of subjects including Chemistry, Art and Photography, Classics, and Economics.

2023 headline A Level results from St Mary’s are as follows:

–  45% of students awarded grades A*-A

–  69% secured grades at A* – B

–  88% achieved grades at A* – C

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress at St Mary’s School, said: “We are immensely proud of our 2023 Sixth Form cohort. The determination and perseverance they have demonstrated to achieve these great set of results is inspiring. It’s been a strange few years for these students. The disappointment they felt when GCSEs were cancelled in 2021 was upsetting to see. Naturally, there were nerves going into this exam period – but each and every student worked extremely hard to achieve their full potential and they should be very proud of themselves.”

Continuing, she said: “Our congratulations go to all of our Year 13 girls. We will miss them, and their parents – who have been unwavering in their support of the girls and our school over the past few years. We look forward to seeing what the girls go on to achieve and celebrating their future achievements as part of our alumnae family.”

This year, students leaving St Mary’s will be going on to study an eclectic range of subjects including Biosciences, Chemistry, Classics, Computer Science, Economics, Geography, Medicine, Music and Veterinary Medicine.

LVS Ascot

Students at Independent day and boarding school LVS Ascot, where young people are inspired to exceed expectations have done just that, with the Year 13 Class of 2023 celebrating a fantastic set of results with a greater percentage of A-Level passes.

After a very challenging education for this cohort, with their past exams and teaching having been affected by the pandemic, LVS Ascot A-level students have gone above and beyond. Our overall pass rate is up by 2% from 94% to 96%, despite national predictions and speculation that may have suggested otherwise.

Charlotte, who has been with LVS Ascot right through from Reception Class, achieved an incredible A*AA. She will now be attending Royal Holloway to study History. Charlotte said, “LVS Ascot was a really welcoming environment, and the staff have always been great. I had many opportunities to try different things, including sport and drama.”

Josh, who achieved A*AA is going to the University of Birmingham to study Maths with Computer Science. Josh said, “The teachers were very approachable, and they made the lessons really engaging and enjoyable for all levels.”

Principal, Christine Cunniffe, said “We are so proud of all our pupils who have shown such fortitude and resilience, especially when considering the unique circumstances of the pandemic they had to endure in their education. Leweston

Leweston students celebrate the best A Level results for nearly a decade

As news services around the country report a drop in A Levels this summer, Leweston students are celebrating some of the school’s best results for nearly a decade.

Nearly two thirds of all grades at Leweston were A* or A, over twice the national average. Whilst the proportion of top grades in England is about 1% higher than 2019, Leweston’s grades are 20% higher than the last set of pre-COVID results at the school.

Almost half of the students achieved at least two A* or A grades, and Caitlin, Katerina, Mimi and Anna achieved an impressive 4 A*, 12 A and 2 B grades between them.

Those students taking the popular Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) achieved 100% A* and A grades. Much sought after by universities, the EPQ helps students to develop independent research, essay writing and time management skills and enables them to explore a subject of their choice. Other subjects that saw majority A* and A grades this summer were Chemistry, Geography, Economics, Computer Science, Religious Studies, Fine Art and Photography.

Mr Paget-Tomlinson, Headmaster commented:

“It has been well reported in the run up to A Level results day that there was a plan to bring grades back down in line with pre-pandemic levels, after sharp rises in 2020 and 2021, when results were based on teachers’ assessment; however, our students have out-performed these pre-COVID years. This is testament to the hard work and dedication shown by Year 13, as well as the teaching staff that support them. I am incredibly proud of their achievements and delighted by the wide range of courses and destinations they have chosen. This is truly a reflection of our intent to find the right pathway for each individual pupil”.

Students will be leaving to take up places at universities including Durham, Exeter, York, Bristol, Nottingham, Reading and Hartpury on courses as diverse as Medicine, History and Ancient History, Politics and Modern Languages, Computer Science with Maths, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Product Design Technology and Equestrian Sports Science.

These are a very strong set of results, reflecting a wonderfully dedicated and enthusiastic year group to whom we wish the very best of luck as they look forward to exciting and varied futures. Of course, behind the statistics we must also remember how their time through school was significantly different to the norm, what with two periods of school closure, bubbles and all the trials and tribulations brought about by the pandemic. These were also their first ever public examinations and, given all of this, our leavers should hold their heads particularly high today. My thanks go to all colleagues, parents and relatives who worked in support of them and the very warmest of congratulations to our Class of 2023. We look forward to seeing them thrive.”

Royal Hospital School

Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Ipswich are delighted to announce that their Year 13 cohort have performed extremely well in both their A Level and BTEC examinations, securing some outstanding results for the school, particularly at the top end. The number of grades at A*/ Distinction* (10.8%) and A*-A / Distinction*- Distinction (37%) are the best results for more than 10 years (excluding pandemic years 2020-22), with the number of A* to B / Distinction* to Distinction grades (60.3%) being the second highest since 2011, reflecting the continued upward trend of top-end grade performance from our Year 13 pupils.

Highlights include:

  • 10.8% A* / Distinction*
  • 37% A*-A / Distinction*- Distinction
  • 60.3% A* to B / Distinction*- Distinction
  • Over a quarter of the year group (29 pupils) secured points equivalent to 3 A grades or better, compared to 16% in 2019.
  • BTEC performance was particularly strong with three quarters of all grades (76.7%) gaining Distinction* or Distinction (equivalent to A*/A grade at A Level).
  • Subjects that performed particularly well, achieving 100% A* to C (or equivalent), are Classical Civilisation, English Language, English Literature, Enterprise & Entrepreneurship, History, Latin, Religious Studies and Spanish.
  • Art, Chemistry, Creative Digital Media Production, English Literature, Enterprise & Entrepreneurship and Spanish results were particularly strong, with over 80% being awarded A* to B grades (or equivalent).
  • Pupils secured places on highly competitive courses at leading universities such as Biochemistry & Business at Bath, PPE & Modern Languages at Durham, Psychology at Exeter, Veterinary Science at Liverpool, and Classical Archaeology & Ancient History at Royal Holloway. Four pupils will be going on to study overseas at universities in Germany and Spain, whilst another four will be going on to complete degree apprenticeship positions in London and elsewhere.

Simon Lockyer, Headmaster, comments:I am delighted for this year’s leavers who have achieved some tremendous results.  With my oldest son in Year 13, I have had a more personal insight into the challenges this cohort has faced in the past few years. They have shown real tenacity, resilience and grit and not only have they gained some of our strongest results on record, they have also graduated as outstanding and committed young people, who are true global citizens. I hope that alongside their achievements they do feel excited and equipped for what lies ahead.

I know that today will prompt a range of emotions amongst the pupils as well as my colleagues who invest so much of their time for our pupils. I am grateful for the commitment, encouragement and support that all members of the school community contribute to enable our pupils to achieve their best. I appreciate the significance that these results play but I also recognise how much more our pupils gain from the experiences and exceptional opportunities that extend beyond the curriculum. This was endorsed by the school being shortlisted for ‘Co-educational School of the Year 2023’ by Independent School Parent magazine and the achievement of the Wellbeing Award for Schools earlier this year.”

Catherine Stevens, Deputy Head (Academic), comments: “I am delighted that this year’s results continue to demonstrate the upward trend of academic performance at RHS. Given that this is a cohort who did not sit public examinations at GCSE, they have performed exceptionally well, a reflection of the combined hard work of our pupils and teachers.

There has been much media discussion as to what pupils might expect from their results this summer, with talk of the impact of ‘grade deflation’ as the grade standard returns to 2019.  I am therefore delighted that this cohort significantly outperformed our 2019 results, with the vast majority gaining results that secure their future pathway, whether that be at their university of choice, a degree apprenticeship or other chosen pathway.

Additionally, our BTEC courses have once again gained outstanding results, with three quarters of grades being Distinction* or Distinction (equivalent to A* or A at A Level), demonstrating that RHS continues to provide a broad and exciting curriculum that successfully caters for all our pupils.”

Cranleigh School

Cranleigh is pleased to report another year of excellent A-Level results, with 17 per cent of students achieving the top A* grade, 46 per cent of grades at A*-A, 80 per cent of grades at A*-B and an overall pass rate of 100 per cent.

This cohort were impacted at GCSE level by ongoing issues surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. They performed extremely well, at A-Level, with 44 per cent of students gaining A*/A in two or more subjects, and over two-thirds of the cohort achieving all A*-B.

Mr David Boggitt, Cranleigh’s Deputy Head Academic, said: “Despite the return to pre-pandemic grading and the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, this cohort have performed superbly well.  They committed themselves to their studies and supported each other brilliantly.  We wish them them the very best in their future plans.”

Earlier in the year Cranleigh announced another excellent set of Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Most Sixth Formers at Cranleigh take an EPQ alongside studying for three A-Levels. The qualification asks students to undertake a longer piece of research culminating in a dissertation style essay or the production of an artefact. It’s now widely used as a preparation for university learning by schools and sixth form centres across the country. This year’s results were outstanding, with 52 per cent of pupils gaining A*/A and 78 per cent of all EPQs graded at A*-B.

The students who collected their results today are already focusing on their futures and most have had their university places confirmed.

August 17, 2023 – 10:34am

The Leys

On Thursday 17 August, staff and pupils at The Leys celebrated an outstanding set of A Level results. This year, just short of 80% of grades achieved were at A*-B (up on 2022) and more than 54% were graded A*-A (again, up on 2022).

Reflecting on the disruption that this year group went through during the pandemic in the very formative years of their school career, it is particularly impressive that in terms of pupil outcomes, 62% of this cohort of Leysians achieved at least AAB at A Level.

Top performers include Isaac K, Francesca N, Benjamin TB and Alvin T, all of whom gained all A* grades, Anson L who received three A* grades and one A, and Mark F who will be continuing his studies at Cambridge University to read Engineering after receiving the two A*s and two A grades he needed.

Headmaster at The Leys, Martin Priestley, commented: “These are really strong results and I am delighted to send my congratulations to the Class of 2023. The A*-A percentage and A*-B percentage are particularly pleasing and up on last year’s results. For more than six in ten of this cohort to have achieved AAB or better is a great result.

“This was a wonderful year group of Leysian pupils who achieved so much in their time at The Leys, both in the classroom and outside it. We will certainly miss them when we resume at the start of next term, but I send each and every one of them my very best wishes for their next chapters, whether that be onwards to university, into a gap year or whatever their plans may be.”

Denstone College

Denstone College celebrates wonderful A-Level results

Once again, Denstone College are celebrating with their pupils today on receipt of an impressive set of A-Level grades. With 15 children sweeping straight A grades and over 80% already accepted into their chosen Universities.

Head, Lotte Tulloch, is delighted with the performance of all the pupils and is looking forward to hearing the success stories of the children as they move on to higher education, degree apprenticeships or the world of work.

These results have not happened accidentally and Lotte is full of praise for the young men and women who have worked so hard through years of disruption but also to her remarkable teaching staff who have helped teach, mentor, coach and tutor their charges to success.

Grades are rightfully adjusted to the pre-pandemic levels in a continued desire to create stability and normality in education and whilst nationwide, this particular cohort may feel they have been unfairly targeted – it is a necessary step to provide stability and to ensure the whole world knows the gold standards of our education system. To know that our pupils have excelled irrespective of this shift in grade boundaries is wonderful.

However, at Denstone College, colleagues and parents are reminded that it is not always the ‘A grade’ student who has achieved the most and they seek to celebrate those children who have made significant progress in other areas and those children for whom the ‘value added’ is greatest.

Head, Lotte Tulloch, says “Today we send into the world fine young men and women who have not just a string of excellent A-Level grades – for that would be hollow honours indeed – but young men and women of good character and strong soul.”

Brother And Sister Award Winners Aim For Oxbridge

Mariam Mehrez (19) and her brother Ahmed (18) who came to the UK four years ago, after living in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, are hoping to make their dreams come true with places at Oxford and Cambridge.

Mariam, who has a place to study Physics at Oxford University, was inspired by seeing women back home unable to pursue their STEM dreams.  After gaining 5 A*s in her A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics and 13 A*s at GCSE, Mariam won a scholarship to top school Cardiff Sixth Form College. Ahmed, who has gained 4 A*s in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics and has a similar record of 12A*s at GCSE, is planning to take a gap year working in the technology industry before applying for computer science or maths in 2024.

Mariam and Ahmed’s family moved to the UK as their father got a job working as a doctor. “Moving to the UK opened a multitude of opportunities especially as a woman interested in STEM” Mariam said. “I moved in year 11 so had to go down a year to follow the GCSE curriculum. It was a good decision as it allowed me to take my time adapting to the new curriculum and environment. It also meant that I was in the same year group as my brother.  We help each other a lot, work well together and make a good team.”

As well as her studies, Mariam has taken part in many super-curricular activities and competitions. Highlights include winning Top 50 Gold in the British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) which places her in the top 2% in the UK.  She was also a finalist (top 20) in the Egyptian Mathematics Olympiad, winning a diamond award (top 50) in the Isaac Senior Physics Challenge administered by the University of Cambridge.  Miriam has also undertaken a work placement at Diamond Light Source, researching the process of corrosion in a variety of metals reacting under different conditions and joined Cambridge University’s STEM SMART where she attended weekly problem-solving sessions in physics and mathematics culminating in a summer school at the university.

Extending himself outside of the classroom is also important to Ahmed who’s aiming for a place at Cambridge University in 2024 studying either computer science or mathematics. Ahmed won a Gold Award in the BPhO (top 150) and a silver award in the final round of the International Youth Maths Challenge (top 10% of all participants), regularly takes part in Project Euler solving pure maths problems using a computer and enjoys LeetCode – a platform which he says “helps you enhance your coding and problem solving skills and knowledge as well as helping prepare for technical interviews for companies like Google or Facebook”. Ahmed is also very interested in cyber security and having accomplished a high level of proficiency in CyberDiscovery, was awarded free access to a cybersecurity foundation course by industry leaders SANS institute which helped him gain not only technical knowledge but also an understanding of the social and ethical considerations of cybersecurity.

The two also often join forces, helping and encouraging each other in their activities. Both have taken part in the prestigious Oxford University Quantum Club where they undertook a rigorous study of first year undergraduate quantum physics.  As a pair, they took part in the Computational Physics Challenge – winning top 5 gold and were invited to the BPhO award ceremony at the Royal Society. Ahmed and Mariam also worked together as a team in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales as main coder and team leader respectively, where they researched issues in the Severn Tunnel culminating in a 40+ page report on a machine learning model they devised to automate tunnel inspections and their team being awarded best presentation. Together, they also won the Egyptian Space Settlement Space Design competition and represented Africa and the Middle East at the international finals.

Giving back to the community is important to the sibling duo. “I want to use my multi-cultural background to help others and to bridge the gaps between communities” Mariam said. “This has led me to teach Arabic to non-Arab Muslims in my local mosque which I switched to an online mode during the pandemic enabling me to reach over 100 students.  I also volunteer at a Middle Eastern Ed-Tech Startup finding, condensing and translating information about educational opportunities to make it more accessible”.  Ahmed regularly volunteers for the medical education company, Saving Lives Academy, using his technical skills to help automate their systems. “The ability of computer science to help people is tremendous and I am glad for the opportunity to sharpen my skills whilst giving back” Ahmed said.

Speaking of their experience at Cardiff Sixth Form College, the two were inspired by their teachers and other students. “Being part of such a diverse student body is a wonderful experience and there’s something to be learned from all the other students who are always so welcoming and supportive” commented Mariam.

Said Principal, Cardiff Sixth Form College, Tom Arrand: “Both Mariam and Ahmed are scholars here at Cardiff and we recognised their innate intelligence and work ethic at application stage.  They have both made the most of all the scientific and volunteering opportunities here at the school and have really appreciated the quality of teaching asking questions far beyond the curriculum.  They are students who will make a significant difference in the world and who will be at the cutting edge of technology and research and I very much look forward to following their careers.”

British Iranian Activist Shines Light on Women’s Rights and Gains Place to do Law

Nicki Naemi-Zaker (18) a remarkable British Iranian student, is not only capturing the spotlight for her inspiring activism but also for her extraordinary academic achievements.  With an unwavering commitment to social justice, Nicki is on the path to study law at the prestigious London School of Economics, fuelling anticipation for her future endeavours in the legal field having achieved three A*s in Economics, History and Maths and an A in English Literature.

Hailing from an Iranian heritage, Nicki has embraced her unique cultural background as a catalyst for change.  Her recent bold and comedic Iranian dance performance at the Eisteddfod garnered attention as she fearlessly addressed the pressing issue of women’s rights in Iran.  By leveraging her artistic talent, Nicki skilfully shed light on the stark disparities between cultural norms in Iran and the freedoms enjoyed in the United Kingdom.  Her captivating dance routine not only entertained but also served as a powerful catalyst for conversation and social progress.

Alongside her activist efforts, Nicki has demonstrated exceptional academic prowess.  Driven by her passion for law, she has gained a place at the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science where she also has applied for a scholarship, further underscoring her intellectual capabilities and dedication to her chosen path.

“I wanted to publicise as well as entertain the school community and highlight some of the issues with women’s rights and personal freedom in Iran” said Nicki.  “It would have been impossible to do that dance in Iran for example, I would have been arrested.  What is vital is that we talk about human rights and the laws in different countries to see how we can help make a difference.”

Despite personal challenges, including her father’s cancer health scare and her brother’s learning difficulties, Nicki has persevered and emerged as an exceptional student.  She took on a significant project as part of her Extended Project Qualification meticulously crafting a thought- provoking documentary, reconstructing an online law case, whilst also composing the background music.

Beyond her academic pursuits, Nicki has been a beacon of leadership at Cardiff Sixth Form College where she won a full 100% academic scholarship.  She has served as President of the Law Society, initiated the Mooting Competition, sought opportunities to mentor her peers and her inspirational talk on becoming the best version of oneself brought the closing remarks at the acclaimed TedX talk event.

“We are in awe of Nicki’s unwavering dedication to both her activism and academic pursuits” said Cardiff Sixth Form College Principal, Tom Arrand. “Her ability to fearlessly address sensitive issues and bridge cultures through art is remarkable.  We have no doubt that her impressive achievements will pave the way for an extraordinary future in the legal field.”

Brain Surgery Survivor Poised to Fulfil Dream of Becoming a Doctor

Kealan Jones, an extraordinary 18-year old from Neath who underwent life-saving brain surgery at the age of 12, is now on the path to realising his ambition of becoming a doctor at Imperial College London.

Kealan started experiencing debilitating headaches which escalated leading him to be admitted to hospital for a critical operation.  Witnessing the dedication and expertise of the surgeons and medical staff, who worked tirelessly under intense pressure, profoundly influenced Kealan’s decision to pursue a career in medicine.

“It was an incredibly frightening time for both me and my family” said Kealan.  “The sudden illness took us by surprise.  As I observed the hospital staff caring for patients, many in dire situations, I realised the profound difference they were making.  None of my family members were involved in medicine, but their impact on my life and the lives of others inspired me and set a clear path for my future.”

Despite coming from a non-medical background, Kealan, the son of a local theatre manager and financial inclusion officer, excelled academically.  He attended the local comprehensive school, achieving exceptional results in his GCSE results and won a full scholarship to top school, Cardiff Sixth Form College, where he studied chemistry, biology, maths and economics A-levels gaining A*s in all four subjects.

Commendably, Kealan actively participates in college life despite traveling over an hour each way from Neath to Cardiff.  He has been undertaking charity work for Noah’s Arc Children’s Hospital Charity which funds innovative medical equipment and facilities and is President of the Medical Ethics Society.  He wrote his Extended Project Qualification on ‘Should those with self-inflicted illnesses be treated for free on the NHS’ and was appointed Deputy Head of School where he organises college events such as TedX talks, hosts induction visits for new students and organises fundraisers including a charity hike up Pen y Fan.

Tom Arrand, Principal of Cardiff Sixth Form College said: “Kealan has made a real impact at the college, consistently placing others before himself and striving to make a positive impact.  He led the way in supporting our chosen charity this year, Noah’s Ark, inspiring fellow students to raise funds for this worthy local cause.  With his exceptional empathy, Kealan is poised to become an outstanding doctor, and we are proud to be part of his journey.”
