Leweston Prep’s WOW Day for Chinese New Year!

Posted: 10th February 2022

Prep 6 and Reception had a WOW Day for Chinese New Year, with fancy dress, traditional cuisine and lots of festive crafts!

On Tuesday 1 February, in celebration of Chinese New Year, Prep 6 had a WOW Day. WOW days are fun filled educational activities to help immerse pupils into topics.

Chinese New Year has fitted in superbly with this WOW day as the students have been learning about ‘mountains’ and the class book is ‘King of the Cloud Forest‘ by Michael Morpurgo. After half term, the pupils will be learning about Shang Dynasty.

The exciting day consisted of lots of creative Chinese crafts such as making lanterns and paper dragons and even enjoying a selection of Chinese cuisines such as noodles, rice and prawn crackers, all provided by Prep 6 Teacher, Mrs Jackson, who use to live in Hong Kong! The prawn crackers were a clear winner!

On Wednesday 2 February, it was Reception’s turn to get involved in the WOW Day! The pupils made a Chinese dragon earlier on in the week then watch a video on how to ‘dance’ like a dragon in China, and surprised Miss Philips, Head of Prep, with their newly learnt dance. They then got creative and made beautiful, glittery lanterns to take home. The pupils also learned the story of the zodiac and then used the animals in the class to recreate the story.

In the afternoon, the pupils made fortune cookies and even wrote what would be in the message such as ‘I hope the sun shines on you‘ and ‘I hope you are happy as monkeys‘.

BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity who are dedicated to getting children reading, see their website here for more information. Our most recent book from them was called ‘I am a Tiger’ by Karl Newson and Ross Collins. The pupils were thrilled to receive such a lovely book that linked in with their topic and helped celebrate the Year of The Tiger!

Leweston Prep thanked all the pupils who got dressed up and involved with the activities throughout the day, they all looked amazing in their Chinese New Year costumes.
