Bromsgrove School participated in the GCHQ CyberFirst Girls Competition, a key initiative that supports Cyber STEM Education as an integral part of the Computing curriculum. The School aims to equip its students with a strong awareness of current issues in technology and cyber security. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, Bromsgrove School has worked extensively to ensure that its students are confident, cyber-aware, and prepared for the complexities of the future.

The CyberFirst Girls Competition provided an opportunity for students to delve into advanced cyber topics not typically covered in traditional education. The competition challenged the participants to stretch their lateral thinking and expand their knowledge.

Two teams participated in this prestigious national competition in November, achieving commendable results. Although the teams did not advance to the National Finals this year, they had an immensely enjoyable week solving problems, cracking codes, and learning about networks and coding. The performance of the teams was impressive, with the winning team’s score potentially placing them in the top 10% of UK participants.

One pupil  expressed her appreciation, saying, “Thank you so much, GCHQ, for organising this event – the challenge was fun, and we learned a lot of exciting things.”

Mr Palmer, Computer Science teacher and leader of the program, commented, “Our students really are the next generation of Bromsgrove’s brilliant minds, poised to drive innovation in the global marketplace. We are also proud to have been awarded the iBelong award by the National Centre for Computing Education for promoting inclusion and diversity in STEM subjects for the benefit of all our students. There is absolutely nothing that our pupils won’t have a good go at.”

For those involved in Cyber, Computing, Engineering, Tech, or STEM, Bromsgrove School is eager to expand its partnerships with local and regional STEM organizations. Mr Palmer, who leads the initiative, is open to new collaborations and can be contacted at jpalmer@bromsgrove-school.co.uk.
