Students encouraged to make “meaningful connections” as Steyning Grammar welcomes Chinese visitors.

A group of Chinese students were welcomed to Steyning Grammar School at the weekend
with an energetic dragon dance and a New Year feast.
Thirty students from two schools in the Henan Province in China are taking part in the two
week “immersion visit”, attending lessons at SGS, playing sports together and taking part in
extracurricular activities with their “buddies”, students chosen from the school’s boarding
community.
During their time in England, the Chinese students will also visit Brighton, London, Oxford,
the Harry Potter studio tour and take part in a hike on the South Downs.
This will be the first time in the school’s 400-year history that SGS has hosted a visit and
staff hope that pupils from both countries will benefit from the experience.
Director of boarding Tom Leighton added: “This is a great opportunity for cultural exchange,
to make new friends and learn new things.”
Headteacher Adam Whitehead told the visitors : “We hope your time in our country will be
filled with unforgettable experiences and making some meaningful connections.
“The friendships you forge in your time here will cross the borders and will foster a better
sense of our global community.
“In our boarding school we have over 30 nationalities so you are not just getting an English
experience, you are getting an international experience.”
Mr Whitehead urged the Steyning students to have a go at speaking Mandarin.
“Trying a different language can be nerve wracking but nothing bad can happen if you just
have a go, don’t be afraid to make some mistakes,” he said.
“Language is a very powerful tool so let’s all have a go at communicating with each other.
“We very much view this visit as a two way street and would like to learn as much as we can
about your culture and how you look at the world.”
At the welcome feast students and staff enjoyed a traditional dragon dance, performed by
the Sussex Chinese Lion Dancers. Part of the routine involved chewing on lettuce and then
spitting it out over the delighted audience
