Cultural Day at CRGS

Posted: 30th October 2023

Coming together to celebrate the rich tapestry of our diverse traditions and identities, on Friday 29th September Colchester Royal Grammar School had its first Cultural Day of this academic year.

Through vibrant performances, mouth-watering cuisines, and captivating exhibitions, we embarked on a collective journey to share, explore, and honour the unique aspects of our respective cultures. It allowed us to stand united and showcase the beauty that lies within our differences, reminding us that it is our collective cultural mosaic that makes us a vibrant and harmonious community.

One of the beautiful aspects of Cultural Day was the exchange of knowledge: people from different communities were educating others about their traditional dances, cooking techniques, and cultural practices. There even featured a musical extravaganza with performances from various diverse cultures. The presence of a Dhol, a traditional Indian drum played by Arman, added rhythm and energy to the atmosphere. Musicians and dancers from various cultural backgrounds shared their talents, making it a fantastic celebration of music and dance.

Many participants wore traditional clothing from their respective cultures. These included items like saris and kurta-pajamas from India, veshti from Sri Lanka, kimono from Japan, and dashikis from various African countries. The vibrant reflection of the various cultures and traditions represented in the event showcased the rich tapestry of global attire and its historical significance. It was truly a visual representation of the vast array of cultures that we have at CRGS.

The food served represented a colourful array of global flavours. Jollof rice, a popular West African dish, was a particular hit with its spicy tomato-infused rice and vibrant colours. Pani puri and samosas brought the zest of Indian street food, while poha and biryani offered a taste of the subcontinent’s culinary diversity. Rose milk, not only enjoyed for its taste but also for its beautiful appearance, ensured that everyone got a taste of Sri Lankan culture, providing a hint of floral sweetness and quenching thirst.

Raising funds for The Akshaya Patra Foundation this Cultural Day was a heartfelt endeavour that united our community in a meaningful way. The Foundation’s mission is to provide nutritious meals to underprivileged children, a cause close to our hearts. By partnering with the government and various stakeholders, the Foundation ensures that children receive daily meals in schools, which not only combats hunger but also encourages regular school attendance.

Cultural Day is now a well-established, biannual event at CRGS and forms a key part of the school’s wide-ranging Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work. To find out more, just visit the EDI page on our website.
