ACS Cobham swaps classroom learning for the great outdoors

Posted: 24th May 2023

Almost 250 students (aged 4 – 14) from ACS International School Cobham celebrated National Outdoor Classroom Day, and enjoyed a range of exciting activities in the great outdoors, which included STEM classes, gardening sessions and drama workshops.

The Surrey-based school challenged each class in Early Childhood, Lower School, and most of its Middle School to use different areas of the school grounds for at least one of their lessons during the day to bring learning to life in subject such as Maths, Science, Drama, PE, Sustainability and English.

Gwendoline Sandow, Science, Outdoor and Forest School Educator at ACS Cobham, said: “All over the UK, young people are spending less and less time outdoors, which is having a negative impact on their mental health, wellbeing and development. By encouraging our students to learn outdoors we’re making them happier and healthier, all while equipping them with lifelong skills. Outdoor Classroom Day is always such a huge success at ACS Cobham and we’re so excited to explore how we can integrate learning and the great outdoors further together in the future.”

One Grade 8 student at ACS Cobham said: “It’s really nice to spend time outside laughing with friends while making our community a better place. In fact, earlier this year we got to design a garden and choose our own plants or flowers to take care of and watch grow. This was a really useful experience as we got to incorporate our own designs and take responsibility of our own plants. I’ve learned a lot working in the garden and I can’t wait to learn more.”
