Lucy Meyer, an Upper Sixth day student from Somerset, noticed the positive impact art had on mental health during the pandemic and wanted to do something to help raise awareness. She said, “I noticed how art had a positive impact on mine and other people’s mental health, particularly during lockdown, a time where many people felt a sense of isolation and disconnect.”

Lucy, who joined Millfield Prep in Year 7, proposed her idea to the art department about a themed exhibition in the school’s Atkinson Gallery that marks the emergence from the pandemic and the positive influence the creative arts can have on well-being. The exhibition titled, “Darkness to Hope” is raising funds for Yeovil Hospital Children’s Unit.

Lucy said, “The Millfield art department has been immensely supportive and helped me to turn the idea into a reality by helping to contact local artists, inviting them to participate in the exhibition, and liaising with the hospital. They also helped me bring the pieces together and arrange them on the wall.” The exhibition is a combination of local and national artists as well as student work from Millfield and surrounding local schools.

Since joining Millfield, Lucy has found her passion for art, “I initially came to Millfield for hockey, however as I progressed through the school I grew more and more interested in art.” she said.

Millfield Head of Art and Photography, India Meakin said, “We are incredibly proud to see Lucy’s proposal for the exhibition come to a realisation, and for such a great cause. From the initial stages to curation, Lucy placed others at the forefront and highlighted the importance of the arts on wellbeing.”

After Millfield, Lucy hopes to study Textiles at Falmouth University.
