Leweston School’s historical inter-house gymnastics and dance competition for Years 7 and 8.

On Wednesday 16 February, Leweston School hosted their historical Inter-House Gymnastics and Dance Competition for Years 7 and 8. The competition allows students to showcase their interests and passion in an aesthetical sport and enables them to appreciate others as they performed in front of the rest of their class. Previously, the competition use to be just a gymnastic based routine but over the past 3 years they have now incorporated dance.

It was wonderful to see some Year 7 boys in the final, as this historic competition use to be just for girls. Gymnastics is a main PE activity for Years 7 and 8, so the senior school was delighted to invite Prep 6 to the Sports Hall to watch as it gives them an insight into what they could be doing next year.

The students picked out their own music, and this music was unique to them and became their team name.

All the students performed brilliantly, making sure they included moves from the judging criteria. A teddy bear roll would had scored them one point, whereas a somersault would had scored them 2 points. The judges were looking for not only gymnastic moves, but also dance moves as well such as synchronisation and mirrored moves. The Year 7 boys showed a lot of emotion in their choreography, such as Seb C, Charlie C, Nico G-G, in Team ‘Sunflower’ portrayed a fantastic performance of Spider-Man. Team ‘When I Grow Up’ (Josie M and Ruby P, Year 7) performed their routine to the song from Matilda, which is this year’s school play in the Senior school.

Congratulations to 1st place winners, Team ‘Dandelions’ (Bea B, Evanna B, Issy W and Cecily F, Year 8) who scored a total of 29 points. Second place went to Team ‘Head Above Water’ (Jess S, Hen J, Mylla M and Lauren D, Year 8) who scored 28.5, just half a point away from joint first, and third place of Team ‘Hey Brother’ (Ellie B and Ella H, Year 7) who scored a total of 27.
