St Mary’s girls have got talent!

Posted: 7th January 2022

St Mary’s School in Cambridge has hosted its second online talent show, with students from across the school submitting videos of star quality performances, which were judged by Olivier-awarding winning stage and film actor, Miles Western.

The celebrity judge, who has starred in the West End in Phantom of the Opera and Priscilla Queen of the Desert, was impressed by the high standard and variety of performances put forward by the students at St Mary’s. Rather than hosting an actual event, pupils created and submitted videos during the autumn term to aid social distancing. These were turned into a video, which Miles then watched and judged remotely.

Out of all of the incredible acrobatic, singing, musical and dancing entries received from across St Mary’s Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form, there could only be one winner and one runner up.

On Friday 07th January, students gathered for a whole school assembly where a video of all of the performances received its premiere. The winner of the show was then revealed by Miles via a pre-recorded video announcement. Rebecca S in Year 7 was judged the overall winner with her incredible rendition of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘The Best Part’ from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+. Rebecca accompanied her singing with an acoustic guitar performance. In addition, Marnie J in Year 6 was announced as a runner-up with her skilful cheerleading routine, which included a range of stunts such as back-flips.

The lucky winner received a Lockhouse Escape Games gift voucher and the runner-up walked away with a delicious chocolate hamper.

Headmistress at St Mary’s School, Charlotte Avery, said: “Once more we were blown away by the creative skills and the calibre of the performances put forward for the St Mary’s Talent Show. This year’s show was held online once again because of COVID, but our girls delivered some incredible show-stopping acts. Our celebrity judge, Miles Western, certainly had his work cut out trying to choose one winner and one runner up. Very well done to all of our students who submitted videos and huge congratulations go to Rebecca and Marnie. Once again, this event proved that St Mary’s really does have talent in abundance!”
