Felsted Head Girl named Superleague Saracens Mavericks Captain

Poppy Tydeman, aged 18 from Great Dunmow has been selected as captain for the U19 Superleague Saracens Mavericks Team 2021. She is also Head Girl and Captain of Netball at Felsted School.

Poppy has been playing netball since she started at Felsted Prep School in 2009 and was selected for the Felsted 1st team whilst only in Year 9. During this time, Poppy has been on tour to Barbados and competed at the 2020 National School Finals.

“We are so proud of Poppy and her Netball achievements.” comments Head of Felsted Netball and current Superleague London Pulse player, Lindsay Keable. “She has been a great asset and a fundamental member of the 1st Netball Team for many years. Poppy has been a great role model to the other girls in school and across all year groups. We wish her all the best in the future netball endeavours and hope her success continues.”

Poppy was recently nominated and selected as a Sporting Champion with the ‘Everyone Active Sporting Champions’ scheme, which provides funding and support for talented Athletes. Launched in 2016 and supported by one of the country’s most recognised sporting talents, Colin Jackson CBE, the scheme has already helped many athletes on their journey to become a national and international sporting success with mentoring and specialist training. Athletes in the scheme are able to use the highest standard of facilities for their ongoing training.

Poppy joined the Saracens Mavericks pathway academy in 2018 at the age of 15 and was soon selected to trial for the U17 National Performance League (NPL) squad. She won ‘Most Improved Player’ in 2018 where she competed in the NPL competition making the finals and becoming a Silver Medal Winner at the NPL Netball Competition at Nottingham University. Poppy was then selected for the U19 long squad at the end of 2020 and is now delighted to have been selected as Captain for the 2021 season – her fourth season with Saracens Mavericks.

Outside of Felsted, Poppy also plays for Turnford Netball, which is in the top division of the East Regional League. This squad is a combination of seasoned and young talent with many junior internationals and NPL players represented. Poppy is the youngest member of the team and won ‘Most Valuable First Team Player’ for the 2019 season and ‘Most Improved Player’ for the 2020 season.

Sport is a strong discipline at Felsted School with pupils representing at a regional and national level in a range of different sports, including the Felsted U19 netball team who reached the National finals in 2020. Felsted also has close links with Superleague Clubs, London Pulse and Saracens Mavericks, providing a superior netball pathway. Scholarships are available from age 11 for those showing commitment and excellence in Felsted’s core sports including Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Tennis.
