St Peter’s School, York, Appoints New Senior Deputy Head

St Peter’s School, York, has appointed Maurice Walters as the new Senior Deputy Head from September 2021. In this role, Maurice will be a member of the St Peter’s Leadership Team, contributing to the strategic planning and development of the whole school foundation and will become the Designated Safeguarding Lead. He will also be responsible for the smooth day to day running of St Peter’s 13-18 and make a significant contribution to the development of this section of the school.

Maurice was educated at Poole Grammar School and went on to read Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at St John’s College, Oxford. Following a year of graduate study, and teaching Latin for the College, he accepted a role as Teacher of Latin and Resident Tutor at Canford School. During his eight years there, he was appointed first to the post of Head of Classical Civilisation and then Head of Academic Enrichment. In September 2016, Maurice moved to Shrewsbury School as Deputy Head (Academic) where he has worked extensively to develop and invigorate teaching and learning and made a positive impact on the wider development of the school.

Maurice is married to Emily and has two sons, Joseph and Jonathan. He says of his appointment:
“I am excited and humbled in equal measure to be joining a school which combines, so brilliantly, the high standards and quality education that come with its age-old tradition along with a clear passion for boldness and innovation. During my visits to the school, I have experienced the warmth and collegiate spirit at St Peter’s, and I look forward thoroughly to joining the community in September.”

Head Master of St Peter’s School, Jeremy Walker, added:
“I am delighted with Maurice’s appointment from a very strong field both nationally and internationally. Maurice’s commitment to developing the best possible education for pupils is clear to see and evidenced by achievements throughout his career. As importantly, Maurice’s values and vision for education as the development of the whole person in readiness for a confident, successful and fulfilled life match those of St Peter’s. I am looking forward to working closely with Maurice and welcoming him and his family to St Peter’s.”
