Irfan Latif, Headmaster, comments: “I am absolutely delighted for our 2024 GCSE cohort and proud to be celebrating two record-breaking sets of results this summer alongside the whole RHS community. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the dedicated team of teachers and wider colleagues at RHS, whose unwavering dedication and commitment has provided pupils the opportunity not only to achieve their academic potential, but to explore their passions through a wide range of co-curricular achievements. I’d like to provide particular recognition to the exceptional leadership of Headmaster Simon Lockyer, and Deputy Head (Academic) Catherine Stevens, who have left a lasting legacy at RHS and provided firm foundations for the continued success and growth of the school.

I am immensely proud of the RHS community and look forward to welcoming back many of our GSCE pupils to the Sixth Form in September. As RHS sails into an ever-changing and challenging world, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide an education that prepares pupils not just for exams but for life. The school’s blend of tradition and 21st century innovation creates an environment where pupils can thrive academically, socially and emotionally, and I am excited to navigate RHS through this exciting new chapter.”

Katie Banks, Deputy Head (Academic), comments: “Joining RHS in a year when both GCSE and A Level cohorts have achieved exceptional outcomes is a great honour. Our pupils’ success is a testament to their hard work, and to the expertise and dedication of our outstanding teaching staff. Their vision and commitment to nurturing a vibrant, supportive, and ambitious academic community have been instrumental in shaping the school’s ethos, and it is a privilege to continue to champion this approach.

As we move forward, RHS is committed to continuing to foster an environment where each and every pupil can thrive academically while also developing the skills and passions that will serve them well in life beyond school. We recognise that education extends beyond the classroom, and it is our goal to nurture well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also confident, creative, and compassionate leaders.

ACS International School Egham

ACS International School Egham Celebrates Excellent Middle Years Results

Students at ACS International School Egham are celebrating their impressive International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) results, achieving an average grade of 44 (/56) across the cohort, which is above the global average of 37.48 points.

One student, who secured the highest score in the MYP at ACS Egham, gained an impressive 52 out of 56, equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grade 9 and 4 GCSEs at Grade 7/8. This year, students performed particularly well in Sciences, Extended Maths, French, and Drama.

ACS Egham is one of just 35 schools in the UK to offer the MYP. In 2019, an independent comparative analysis found that the MYP is directly comparable with GCSEs in terms of the level and range of skills that are assessed.

The majority of students at ACS Egham take examinations, although they are an optional part of the MYP. Exams are taken using innovative online technology, allowing students to submit ePortfolios that demonstrate critical and creative thinking. This is in contrast to GCSEs, which use content-focused assessments, with physical pen-to-paper exams. Like GCSEs, MYP eAssessments meet stringent Ofqual standards and are recognised in the UK as Level 2 regulated qualifications.

Mark Wilson, Head of School at ACS Egham, said: “We are extremely proud of the achievements of our MYP students. Every one of them has worked incredibly hard and demonstrated confidence, creativity and diligence in their learning. We hope that the valuable personal skills they have developed will help them to become confident and effective learners as they continue onto the next stage of their education.”

The MYP is taught in 127 countries around the world, and focuses on cultural understanding, holistic learning and communication. The globally recognised alternative to GCSEs prepares learners to become international citizens through a broad and rich curriculum with subjects ranging from Science and Mathematics to Arts and Languages. Worksop College

Worksop College sees best GCSE results in over ten years

In a year when Ofqual predicted grades would remain consistent with last year’s results, Worksop College has not only bucked the trend but soared above expectations. With the best 9-8/A* and 9-4/A*-C results in the last ten years, the College continues its upward trajectory. Even more remarkably, Worksop College has achieved a 100% pass rate in English, a significant accomplishment for a non-academically selective school. Worksop College, a broad-ability school which focuses on maximising individual potential, is proud to announce outstanding value-added results, with this year’s cohort significantly surpassing expectations based on their initial baseline assessments.

Lucy Sanders achieved remarkable success, securing all 9s and A* grades across ten subjects. Opting to continue her journey at Worksop College by joining the Sixth Form, she will focus on Spanish and two more subjects of which she is undecided. “I’m so happy that my hard work has paid off,” Lucy told us. “I couldn’t have done it without the help of my teachers and my parents.”

Next to open his results was Joe Parkin, who joined Worksop College from the school’s prep school, Ranby House. Joe was over the moon with his results, especially thrilled with the Grade 9 he achieved in Science, far surpassing his predicted Grade 6. Across the board, Joe was seventeen grades above what he was predicted. Looking ahead, Joe will continue his studies in the Sixth Form, taking Economics, PE, and Geography. In addition to his academic pursuits, Joe will remain a key player in the first-team cricket squad, a position he has held for the past year.

With a string of 9s and A* grades, Vrishin will continue at Worksop College and study Biology, Chemistry, and Further Maths in the Sixth Form. Fellow sportsperson Luke Baughan-Withington has achieved an exceptional set of results, with one 9, two 8s, two 7s, two 6s, and a B. This impressive performance reflects his hard work, particularly as he balances his schoolwork with a demanding hockey schedule. Local boy Euan Hayes-Wormall was delighted to see seven 9s, two 8s, and an A* as he opened his results this morning. Over the past year, Euan has developed a keen interest in finance, which led him to secure work experience at Schroders Personal Wealth in London through a connection with a Worksop College alumnus. Euan will build on this interest by taking Economics, Spanish and Design & Technology in his A Levels.

Another success story is Mia Juric, a talented student from Berlin who achieved outstanding GCSE results. Despite joining the school as a full boarder in Year 11, halfway through her studies, Mia excelled, particularly in Art, where she was among the 90% of pupils who secured the top Grade 9. Impressively, 100% of students in the subject achieved grades 7-9, highlighting Mia’s exceptional performance and the school’s commitment to excellence.

The College’s values lie in bringing out the best in every pupil, and by offering a broad range of subjects and vocational opportunities, we’ve seen our pupils truly shine. This, of course, would not be possible without the amazing team of staff at the College, and for that I am deeply grateful.”

Particularly strong performances were seen in Physics and History, where over 70% of pupils earned top grades of 7-9. International pupils also excelled, with 52.3% achieving grades 7-9. The percentage of grade 9s has also seen a notable rise, increasing from 5.97% in 2023 to exactly 10% this year.

Headmaster, Sam Hart, has praised the year group saying:

“I am delighted for our pupils. They worked hard and aimed high. It was wonderful to see their smiling faces when they came into School this morning to collect their results. They have been a super year group, and I am now looking forward to seeing them thrive in Sixth Form and start to take on more leadership roles across our busy and exciting co-curricular programme. I am pleased that, once again, we have seen a positive step forward in our percentage of 7-9 grades.”

Our Head of Sixth Form and Careers Expert, Anne Coward, encouraged teenagers and their families at all schools to think carefully about their next steps explaining:

“When your child is going from studying nine subjects to three or four it can be easy to approach it by asking them ‘what they want to do’ but even for those who already have a chosen career path, young minds change easily! Most university courses accept applications from a wide range of subjects, the exceptions being more traditional careers such as medicine, engineering and law. We have had successful applicants in the past who have combined Biology and Chemistry with History, a Language, Drama or English Literature to give them a good blend of subjects. It’s not too late to reconsider what you want to do next if your results are different to your expectations – whether you’re a little disappointed or pleasantly surprised.”

We are continuing our celebrations after A Level Day last week where our A*-A equivalent results increased by 9% to 44%, and A*-C equivalent by 6% to 89%.

The results see our pupils head off to red-brick and Russell group universities including Durham, Exeter, and Newcastle as well as prestigious places on Degree Apprenticeships with Jaguar Land Rover and The Ministry of Justice.

We are already supporting current pupils with their choices for September onwards. We have limited Sixth Form entry places available for this September for anyone who does not currently attend Giggleswick and are re-considering their options this September. To find out more call 01729 893000, email admissions@giggleswick.org.uk or visit Giggleswick.org.uk/apply-now.

Queen Mary’s School

All-Round Success for Queen Mary’s Pupils

Academic excellence continues to shine through at Queen Mary’s School as the Year 11 pupils celebrated outstanding GCSE results highlighting exceptional Value Added scores 1.32 grades higher than external data predictions. Teachers and staff have inspired a love of learning, confidence and independence to empower pupils to achieve their full potential.

Special congratulations to Kallissa, Marissa, Antonia and Charlotte who studied at Queen Mary’s School for over 12 years. Kallissa has achieved an Academic Scholarship for her sixth form place.

Queen Mary’s, between Ripon and Thirsk, tailors education to each individual girl. This is reflected in the wide range of sixth form destinations. These include independent schools such as Shrewsbury School, state schools such as Ripon Grammar School and Dance Captain, Sophia, will be attending Dance College. The school will also see Suzannah, who achieved a Grade 9 in Music, go on to follow in the footsteps of many Old Maryans to pursue her musical talents.

Opportunities at Queen Mary’s are endless with the flexibility for early GCSE entries. This summer two Year 10 pupils achieved superb results in GCSE German and a group of Year 9 pupils are already working towards GCSE Art.

Along with excellent academic results, Year 11 pupils displayed sporting, musical and artistic excellence as they thrived both inside and outside of the classroom. As an example, Olivia was extremely busy in her final year at Queen Mary’s School as a House Captain, Riding Captain and Scholar. During her Queen Mary’s years she enjoyed the Queen Mary’s American Exchange, was on the winning team in the Battle of the Books and came 5th in the National Schools Equestrian Association Championship finals. As a budding politician, Olivia has a passion for Politics, History and Classics and now has fantastic GCSE results to continue her journey with a view to attending university at Oxford or Durham.

Mrs Carole Cameron, Head of Queen Mary’s School, is delighted. “One of our key objectives with each and every child at Queen Mary’s is to find her ‘spark’. All our Year 10 and 11 pupils who have taken GCSE examinations this summer have discovered their strengths and interests.

These marvellous results are a testament to great commitment and talent from pupils and teachers alike. They all should be extremely proud of their many achievements. Queen Mary’s ethos, with the aim to balance academic excellence with wonderful all-round opportunities, leads to happiness and success.”

Queen Mary’s offers academic excellence and extensive co-curricular opportunities in a nurturing environment designed to facilitate ongoing development and achievement.

Queen Anne’s School

A celebration of GCSE results at Queen Anne’s Caversham

This year we are celebrating all of our students’ achievements over a broad range of subjects from Maths to Art to PE, with 25% of grades at the top grade 9, and 67% of grades at grade 9-7.

There was a fantastic buzz at Queen Anne’s School on Thursday morning with students collecting their GCSE results. This year we are celebrating all of our students’ achievements over a broad range of subjects from Maths to Art to PE, with 25% of grades at the top grade 9, and 67% of grades at grade 9-7. The Upper 5 (Year 11) students performed magnificently, achieving one of the best sets of results in the school’s history. With national results returning to 2019 levels, the school was thrilled to see this year’s cohort top pre-covid levels. Well done!

Our students excelled in the core subjects with over 70% receiving 7-9 grades in Maths and a 100% pass rate in English Language with over half (55%) achieving the top grades 8-9. At Queen Anne’s, students can choose whether to sit separate Science exams or the Combined Science (Trilogy). This allows them to specialise and to ensure they are studying the areas that will enable them to pursue their interests in further education. Combined Science has a 100% pass rate with 43% gaining 8-9 grades. What a fantastic achievement! In Chemistry, girls really excelled with 63% achieving grades 7-9, with Physics a close second at 61%. In Biology over half of all students gained 7-9 grades, maintaining the stellar standards.

This year, our PE department led by our Director of Sport, Miss Laura Cox, are especially proud of their students with over a third gaining 9s and 85% receiving grades 7-9. Miss Cox said “A special mention must go to Mrs Jade Evans, an outstanding PE teacher, and the girls who worked exceptionally hard throughout the course.”

A special mention goes to Eleanor Biles who achieved 10 GCSE’s, having sat her Maths paper early in November 2023, achieving a 9, to then go on to take Further Maths and gain another 9! Eleanor took a fantastic range of subjects including History, Computer Science, Further Maths and Music. Eleanor joined Queen Anne’s in Year 7 from Caversham Primary School and is looking forward to continuing in Sixth Form at Queen Anne’s.

It is always fantastic when the whole family celebrates their daughter’s results, and the Spellman family did just that! With 9 amazing GCSE results ranging from Physics, English (Literature & Language) to Art and Music, Milly was awarded all at the top levels of 7-9 including an impressive five 9s!

Another student with outstanding results is Eliza Nasehi, who achieved a fantastic mix of 7s, 8s & 9s in her subjects which included French, PE, Physics and Religious Studies. She really embraced the breadth of studies available at Queen Anne’s.

The Art department were also celebrating, in particular 64% of Textiles Design students who gained 8s and 9s.

Queen Anne’s would like to congratulate all of the Upper 5 students, and can’t wait to see them in September as they continue their journey with Queen Anne’s in the Sixth Form.

Wellington School

Wellington School Celebrates Excellent GCSE Results

Wellington School’s teenagers are inspirational people and – alongside their kindness, principle-led leadership and zest for life – have produced another excellent set of GCSE results. These have followed swiftly on from our outstanding A Level outcomes, with both sets of headline figures being significantly above national averages.

As impressive as these are, grades remain just one metric of the true magic of a Wellington education where individuals are supported and nurtured, confident to chase their incredible potential, with a lack of entitlement and a grounded ambition. Individuals – in all of their beautiful complexity – really matter here, and it is the individual journeys and stories behind every single one of these results that make us so proud.

In headline terms, the number of 9-7 grades is up by 10% on last year, with almost 15% of all grades at level 9, and close to one third of all grades at levels 9 and 8. Over 10% of students achieved seven or more grade 9s and 8s, and four students were awarded seven or more grade 9s. And all this in a school that – amongst many other recent national commendations and shortlistings – has won the ‘Best Independent Day & Boarding School in Somerset’ (Private Education Awards 2024) and is a finalist in the forthcoming national Independent Schools Award for ‘Best Co-educational School’ and ‘Best Prep School’. Moreover, we are so fortunate to have inspirational teachers, alongside students who feel known, safe and valued, in an environment where it’s cool to collaborate, be curious and think big.

Alex Battison, new Headmaster of Wellington School said: ‘In a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, our community is pioneering the ways and means to enable our young people to flourish. Rather than the status quo in all schools (which typically views education as preparation for a known future) we believe in creating the space and self-belief that inspires our students to create their futures, and to view the present as a site of vibrant possibility for doing so. It is clear that Wellington students are rising to this challenge and we are so proud of them all’.

A week after very good A Level results, the Bishop’s Stortford College campus is once again full of celebration as pupils receive outstanding GCSE results; surpassing the results from last year and placing a new gold standard of high achievement for the College.

With 26% of all grades awarded the highest possible grade 9 (A*) and more than half of all grades being 9–8 (A*), the College continues to stretch able pupils to set their goals and ambitions highly. 42 pupils achieved 10 or more grades between 9-7 (A*-A) and become members of the College’s prestigious ‘10 Club’.

Mr John Maguire, College Head, commented “In order to achieve great success at A level, pupils need a secure knowledge base on which to build their learning. This year’s GCSE results have given the perfect platform to springboard future achievements in our thriving Sixth Form. Our Year 11 pupils have worked exceptionally hard to secure such fantastic results and should be proud of their achievements. I am excited to see how they continue to flourish in the College’s Sixth Form and go on to even greater success.”

Maguire continues, “The College continues to add considerable value to every pupil, helping to ensure they achieve high grades. This year’s results are once again notable for an incredibly high value-added score, as assessed independently and measured by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring.”

GCSE results are consistently strong across all academic departments. The core subjects achieved a staggeringly high percentage of 9-7 grades (A*-A):

  • English Language and Literature, both 90%
  • Mathematics 74%

Academic enrichment and the achievement of 9-7 grades (A*-A) is equally noticeable in other subjects with Design Technology 72% and Art 71%.

Sidcot School

Celebrations for Sidcot School’s GCSE students

A week after celebrating the results of A Level and BTEC students, the Old Library at Sidcot was a hive of activity again this morning as we welcomed our Year 11 students back to celebrate their fantastic GCSE and BTEC Level 2 results.

Students performed brilliantly across various subjects, achieving grades significantly higher than the national average in all grade boundaries. 23% of all grades were 9-7 (A*-A), and 86% were 9-4 (A*-C), far exceeding the national average of 67.4%.

As a non-selective day and boarding school, Sidcot offers a variety of GCSE, IGCSE and BTEC subjects for its Year 11 students and a specialist one-year IGCSE pathway programme for international students.

Isaac, an Academic Scholar recipient, achieved a remarkable five 9’s and four 8’s and said, “I am delighted with my results today and look forward to continuing my studies at Sidcot next year. I’ve enjoyed my time at Sidcot since I joined in Year 7. My teachers’ support has continuously pushed me and allowed me to succeed while enjoying learning. I want to thank all my teachers, especially the history department, who were particularly supportive with extra sessions.”

Sophia achieved a 9, five 7’s and three 6’s and will study A Levels at Sidcot Sixth Form. She said, “Understandably, going through exams can be stressful; however, the constant support and personal encouragement from all my teachers really helped to support me through it all, from one-to-one extra lessons to showing up before and after exams to say good luck and well done. I am very grateful to all my amazing teachers! I now hope to study A-level Biology, Chemistry, Geography and EPQ at Sidcot Sixth Form to become a veterinary surgeon in the future.”

Toby, who has been at Sidcot since Year 7, achieved an outstanding nine GCSEs between levels 9 and 7 including five 9s. Toby commented on his results, “I’m thrilled with my results! The preparation that the School put in place for my exams and the teachers coming in on their own time to support us was really beneficial and made revising easy. Thank you to all my teachers, especially Mr Cox, who, when I wasn’t feeling too confident after my first Further Maths paper, helped to reassure me. I can’t wait to join Sixth Form at Sidcot in September and study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. As I have a keen interest in Formula 1, my ambition is to use my studies to enter Formula 1 Engineering in the future.”

Summer attained five 8s, three 7s, and a 5 and will continue at Sidcot to pursue the IB Diploma, a popular alternative to A Levels. Sidcot is one of the few schools near Bristol that provides this challenging diploma.

Summer commented, “I’m so relieved now that I have my results and have done better than expected! Ms Egan has been lovely and helped me to succeed; I loved studying Art at Sidcot and was thrilled with my grade. I look forward to starting at Sidcot Sixth Form to study the IB Diploma. I plan to study Psychology, Biology, and Art at Higher Level, and Spanish, Maths, and English at Standard Level. I’ve always been interested in Forensics, so I hope to explore that further during my next two years at School (and maybe at university).”

Commenting on the results, James Jones, Head, said, “We congratulate all our GCSE students on the results that they have achieved in their examinations this year. Their success is a fitting reward for their hard work, commitment to their studies and love of learning. The grades they achieved tell only part of their story; as a school, we are proud not only of their academic achievements but also of the young adults that they have become during their time at Sidcot. Alongside their classroom endeavours, they have acquired a broad set of skills and abilities that will equip them for Sixth Form life and have developed the character traits and resilience that will enable them to become the leaders of tomorrow.”

Brentwood School

Brentwood School GCSE Students Excel Within and Beyond the Classroom

Many schools claim to offer an holistic education, but few can match the breadth and depth of achievement at Brentwood School, where academic excellence goes hand in hand with personal growth and co-curricular success.

Not to be outdone by their older peers, the Year 11 Class of 2024 were celebrating an excellent set of GCSE results today alongside a long list of other achievements from the past twelve months and, perhaps most importantly of all, the personal growth and sense of service they have developed during their time at the school.

2024 is the second year of results since the years of Covid-affected grades, and Brentwood students have again significantly outperformed the national picture. Around a fifth of GCSE grades were Grade 9 (against a national figure of 5.1%) and almost 60% were graded 7-9 (22.6% nationally).

A dozen standout students achieved an impressive tally of between 8 and 11 grade 9s, scoring the maximum of 72 points (eight 9s from their best eight subjects including English and Maths). Another 31 students achieved a remarkable combination of between 8 and 11 grade 8s and 9s, and an additional 58 members of the cohort earned an excellent 8 to 11 GCSEs graded between 7 and 9, further demonstrating the high academic standards of the school.

In addition to their academic success, Brentwood School’s Year 11s also demonstrated compassion and leadership, with 54 members of the cohort serving as Peer Mentors, offering guidance and support to younger pupils.

Brentwood School has one of the most successful Performing Arts faculties in the UK: supported by our status as a Steinway School and our flourishing partnership with the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, we are excited to be launching a Specialist Music Programme next term that will offer elite coaching, mentoring and training alongside and as part of our holistic curriculum. Pippa Philpot, one of the country’s leading young pianists, with a place at the Junior Guildhall of Music & Drama, achieved a clean sweep of 11 Grade 9s, and has been selected as one of the inaugural students on the programme. Pippa said she was looking forward to more Chamber Music opportunities and ‘more dedicated time and increased expectations’.

Performing Arts Scholar, Anna Romhany, whose impressive GCSE grades cap a successful year during which she has performed in many of our flagship Dance Shows, concerts and plays, and has been offered places on pre-vocational courses at Rambert and Trinity Laban, as well as also being selected to represent the school on the Specialist Music programme next year.

Despite having to put in countless rehearsal hours, Dance Scholar and Bursary student Nicholas Rashkov, who has won a slew of international dance accolades in Ballroom and Latin, picked up seven Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and two Grade 7s. Skye Lake, who starred in our outstanding production of West Side Story and has represented the school in Athletics, competing in the high jump and 100m, where she was a key member of the Inter Girls’ team who reached two consecutive national finals, bagged a clean sweep of 8s and 9s from her 10 GCSEs. Skye, fresh from the Music Department’s highly-successful tour of La Rochelle, said: “The best thing about co- curricular at Brentwood is that you make friends with people in different years because you have that shared interest. I’m looking forward to joining the Sixth Form in September and getting started on the Winter Musical.”

All-rounder James Farrow, who also returned from La Rochelle last night, achieved five Grade 9s, five 8s and one Grade 7 to cap a busy year that saw him take a starring role in Pride & Prejudice, perform in West Side Story, and still find time to represent the school’s 1st XV Rugby team every Saturday, as well as playing for the Saracens/Essex U16 team. James was a worthy recipient of the most prestigious award on offer at the 2024 Speech Day – the Society of Old Brentwoods Prize for Virtue, Learning and Manners – which is given to the student who personifies the school’s values that have been part of our heritage since 1622. Having moved to the Senior School from Brentwood Prep, James said his mantra was to ‘grab all the opportunities with both hands!’

Fellow Values award recipient, Gracie Coppell, who has also become an accomplished chess player during her time at Brentwood, racked up no fewer than ten Grade 9s. “My 9s in Spanish and German reflect the hard work and fun lessons from my teachers,” she said.

Fellow high achiever Austin Measday returned an impressive nine top grades. Austin, a member of the school’s Combined Cadet Force RAF section and another stalwart of the Performing Arts faculty, is one step closer to his dream of becoming a commercial pilot.

Chess aficionado Nina Pert, who recently won her fifth National Girls’ Chess Championship title, showed her exceptional strategic thinking away from the board with 11 GCSEs, 10 of them at Grade 8 or 9, and an A* in the HPQ research project qualification.

Two budding engineers, Imogen Eastwood and Chloe Dewar, have emerged from Year 11 with more than their impressive GCSE results to celebrate. Chloe’s academic success saw her pick up 10 Grade 9s and 1 Grade 8 while Imogen, who also represented the school’s first ever 1st XI Girls’ Cricket team during a very successful season in which they reached the U17 Essex Cup final, achieved 9 Grade 8-9 and 1 Grade 7. Both girls have been awarded Arkwright Engineering Scholarships which are given to the ‘brightest and best’ students who have the passion and determination to succeed in their future studies and careers. This nationally-acclaimed scholarship is designed to inspire students ‘to pursue their dreams and change the world as an outstanding engineer of the future’, allocating them an industry mentor and financial award.

Twins Max and Sam Kingsley, who have earned international honours representing Great Britain in skiing, have not only excelled on the slopes but have also achieved outstanding GCSE success with no fewer than 14 Grade 9s between them. Despite the rigorous demands of training and competing at the highest level, these remarkable young athletes approached their studies with the same determination they bring to their sport. Their ability to balance the pressures of high-level competition with academic excellence highlights the power of determination, discipline, and passion in achieving success across all areas of life. The brothers ended the 2023/24 ski season with podium finishes in the Interschools Championships and the British Ski Association championships in Switzerland and standout performances in the British Championships and at the Whistler Cup in Canada.

Meanwhile, star cross-country runner Jemimah Knightbridge, who was part of the Senior Girls’ team who reached the national finals, is looking forward to furthering her sporting passion while studying the BTEC Extended Diploma programme. Fellow sports star Alex Harvey, who plays for Essex County Cricket, will take up A Levels in Psychology, Geography and PE.

Another student returning to Brentwood to study BTEC, is fellow cricketer Cara Castleman, who is having an exceptional season for both school and Essex. She was a key member of the 1st XI Girls’ team who reached the county final, as well as being part of the Essex Women’s match day squad. More recently, she represented Essex Women’s U18s in the national finals against Lancashire CC, picking up two wickets during the final.

Ethan Roos and Henry Linley were part of the school team that clinched the prestigious Independent Schools National Golf Finals title earlier this year, securing the biggest prize in the school’s golfing history. Ethan, who recently secured 6th place in the U21 division of the Faldo Series in Wales, is edging closer to his goal of becoming a professional golfer. With an impressive score of 64 points, he will continue his education at Essex Golf College in Rayleigh, all while keeping his dream of earning an American scholarship alive. Practising at least six hours a day, Ethan is unwavering in his commitment, stating: “You’ve got to if you want to be the best.” Demonstrating his dedication to the sport, Ethan was heading off to play in a golf tournament in Benfleet.

Head of Year Jag Khush, who has been with this year group since they were in Year 9, was rightly proud of their achievements: “I’m absolutely delighted with the GCSE results. The pupils have worked incredibly hard and their results are a testament to their hard work and dedication. It was so heartwarming to see so many smiling faces this morning. I’ve enjoyed being their Head of Year for the last three years and am so very proud of all of them for all that they’ve achieved in and outside the classroom. I wish them every success in their post 16 studies.”

Headmaster Michael Bond said: “This is the 30th GCSE results’ day I’ve attended and each one has reinforced what a privilege it is to work in education and see young people rewarded for their hard work as individuals and as part of their wider school community. Our outgoing Year 11 students have achieved so much within and beyond the classroom: having started their senior school journey with two years of Covid-enforced disruption, it has been a real joy to watch them bounce back and develop into the talented – but most of all – service-oriented young adults they have become. We are very much looking forward to supporting the next stage of their journey in our Sixth Form, where they will no doubt continue to serve, and to thrive, within our community.’’

With three Sixth Form pathways to choose from – the International Baccalaureate Diploma, A Levels and BTEC Extended Diploma – our students are spoilt for choice when it comes to the next stage of their academic career.

The results complete a summer of academic success which saw record-breaking International Baccalaureate Diploma awards – confirming Brentwood’s position among the Top Ten IB schools in the UK – and excellent A Level and BTEC Extended Diploma results. When combined, 54.2% of this year’s grades were A* or A (or equivalent) and 80.5% A*, A or B.

New Hall School

Celebrating record GCSE Results at New Hall School

  • Record 76% of grades at 6-9
  • Record 53% of grades at 7-9
  • Record 31% of grades at the top grades 8/9

Today, Year 11 students at New Hall School jumped for joy, with news of their record-breaking results. 76% of grades were at 6-9, 53% at 7-9 and 31% at the top grades 8/9.

New Hall’s top performer, Edward Broderick, from Shenfield, achieved a clean sweep of eleven grade 9s. Edward said: “I’m really happy with my results. I’ve decided on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics for my A Levels. I’m really looking forward to starting boarding at New Hall with all my friends – Sixth Form will be great!”. In Year 10, Edward took two Level 3 qualifications (three years’ early), gaining a grade A* in his Level 3 EPQ and the highest grade, A, in the FSMQ in Additional Mathematics. In 2024, Edward also achieved a Distinction in the UKMT Maclaurin Maths Olympiad 2024, and 95%, the highest score in School, in his Grade 7 Communications Skills, as part of his co-curricular Trinity Drama examinations.

This was closely followed by a group of students with nine or more grades 8/9: Maximilian Pietrzak, with ten grades 9s and an 8; Stanley Bailey, Aurora Navti and Eriaanuoluwa Soname, all with eight grade 9s and three grade 8s; Sarah Ellingworth and Maximilian Algaard, both with eight grade 9s and two grade 8s; Trinity Iya Njopa-Kaba, with six grade 9s, four grade 8s and one grade 7; and Darcey Conway, with six grade 9s, three grade 8s and one grade 7.

Aurora Navti, from Grays, is a weekly boarder, diocesan scholar and this year’s recipient of the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Aurora is excited to be studying Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at A Level, as well as a DELF Diploma in French. “I joined New Hall in Year 7 and have really appreciated the support system available in the boarding house. I’m looking forward to my A Level lessons at New Hall – my ambition is to be a psychiatrist, so I’m hoping to study medicine at university,” Aurora shared.

Particular subjects were celebrating outstanding results at the very top grades. New Hall’s Biology results saw 57% of grades at 8/9. Almost half of students studying French GCSE gained the top grades 8/9. In Greek, the largest ever cohort were awarded 63% of grades at 8/9, with 88% at 7+. In Latin, 68% of grades were 8/9, with 50% at grade 9.

Principal of New Hall, Mrs Katherine Jeffrey, said, “We are all so proud of all our Year 11 students. In my 22 years as Principal, this day has never ceased to be one of the most joyful occasions of the academic year. Our students have worked incredibly hard and it exciting to share this moment with them, as they receive this recognition for their achievements. New Hall’s GCSE records come hot on the heels of last week’s record A Level results at New Hall, with 81% of grades at A*-B and 52% of grades at A*/A.”

New Hall School operates the diamond model structure, with students educated in co-educational classes up to age 11 and again at Sixth Form. From 11 to 16 they are taught in single-sex lessons, enabling the School to tailor pastoral and academic provision during the GCSE courses.

“Each year, we are proud to see the success of the diamond model, as we challenge and overthrow the notions of gender stereotypes in school subjects and teaching. Evidenced by this year’s results and our students’ choices of A Level subjects, we see the positive effects of single-sex teaching on adolescents’ unconscious bias. The co-educational A Level lessons in the Sixth Form will help to prepare them for further education and life beyond school,” commented Dr Paul Tiffen, Vice Principal.

Students are now confirming their A Level subjects: popular choices include Mathematics, Economics, Business, Biology, Politics, Psychology and Theology. This talented cohort also includes a number who will be studying Latin and Greek at A Level.

Head of Sixth Form and Oxbridge classicist, Mr Paul Goulding, said: “We are delighted with this news of the students’ academic successes. They will be progressing to New Hall Sixth Form at an exciting time, with our new Sixth Form Business & Languages Centre opening in September 2024, providing university-style facilities, alongside our Sixth Form Boarding Houses. This will also be the first cohort to have the option to study BTEC Sport at New Hall, after this vocational course, equivalent to two A Levels, was added to the Sixth Form academic provision. We continue to welcome applications for Sixth Form until early September, due to the expansion of our provision this year.”

Brighton College

Over 1100 Grade 9s at GCSE

Brighton, August 22nd 2024: GCSE Results day at Brighton College

The celebrations at Brighton College continued today. Following their record-breaking A-level results last week that placed them as the top independent school in the country, pupils achieved the school’s best ever GCSE results. With an astonishing 94.2% of grades at 9-7 (equivalent to A*-A in old grades), and half of all the school’s GCSEs awarded at grade 9, pupils are delighted with their incredible achievements.

STEM subjects performed exceptionally well at the College, with 98% of pupils gaining grades 9 to 7 and a fantastic 58% achieving grade 9 across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths. In a year group that includes international gymnasts and swimmers, England hockey players, England cricketers, Harlequins rugby players and netball, hockey and chess champions, the talents of these pupils seem to know no bounds.

Professor Alan Smithers, Director of the Centre for Education and Employment Research, said in The Times this week that the UK needs an urgent inquiry into the “chronic underperformance” of boys at GCSE, which he said should be a “matter of national concern”. However, the boys and girls at Brighton College are celebrating equally, with boys receiving 934 grade 9s and 8s and girls receiving 902 at the same grades. This shows one of the many benefits of boys and girls learning alongside each other in a co-educational environment.

Brighton, August 22nd 2024: GCSE Results day at Brighton College

Commenting on the continued success of the pupils, The Principal of Brighton College, Richard Cairns, said: “These spectacular results are entirely due to Brighton creating a culture where it is cool to care about your studies and normal to want to do well. That should be the norm in every single school in the land but sadly we know it is not”.

Head Master, Steve Marshall-Taylor, remarked: “‘We are very proud of our pupils whose hard work and commitment have really paid off. This is a great moment of celebration for them. It is particularly impressive that they have continued to enjoy so many sports and activities, making the most of opportunities outside of the classroom. They are the first cohort to enter our Sixth Form with the new world-class Sixth Form Centre now up and running in the heart of the school. We’re excited to see all that they will go on to achieve and to contribute with us in the next two years.”

King’s Ely

GCSE Celebrations at King’s Ely

King’s Ely students have achieved a stellar set of GCSE results, with more than a quarter of all grades being the highest 9-8, equivalent to the old A*.

Almost half of King’s Ely’s GCSE results this year are grades 9-7 (the old A*-A), and more than three quarters of results are grades 9-5 (the old A*-B). The overall pass rate is 95%, with virtually all students achieving a pass or better in Maths and English Language.

These fantastic results not only reflect our pupils’ hard work and determination, but also their teachers’ and mentors’ expertise and commitment for them to succeed. They also come just a week after our Year 13 cohort once again secured places at their first-choice universities and institutions, not just in the UK, but across the globe. This year, a fifth of A-Level results achieved at King’s Ely Sixth Form were the top A* grade, almost half of grades were A*-A, and three-quarters of results were grade A*-B. The overall pass rate was 100%.

Mr Jonathan Shaw, Head of King’s Ely Senior, said: “We are delighted that the hard work of so many of our pupils has been recognised with some excellent GCSE grades this summer. Many have exceeded expectations, and we are very proud of our Year 11 pupils for their diligence and enthusiasm, both inside and outside the classroom. For many, these results have been achieved alongside a commitment to many aspects of school life, be it music, drama, or sport. I would also like to thank the teachers and other staff who have supported our pupils both academically and pastorally throughout their time at King’s. Success such as this is always the culmination of a superb team effort.”

More than a quarter of this year’s GCSE cohort achieved grades 9-7 in at least eight of their subjects, including one student who secured grade 9s in nine of their subjects, and one student who achieved seven grade 9s.

As is reflective of an all-round, enriched education, King’s Ely pupils have studied and achieved in a wide variety of GCSE subjects. Almost half of all grades in the following subjects were at least a grade 8 – Biology, Chemistry, Drama, History, Latin, Music, Physics, Religious Studies, and Textiles.

James Barber, who joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 9 from St Faith’s School in Cambridge, achieved all grades 9-7. He will be studying A-Levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Further Maths here at King’s Ely Sixth Form. James said: “I am very happy with my results. I revised lots and it all feels worth it now. I am looking forward to studying subjects that I really enjoy at A-Level. Career wise, I hope to go into engineering, maybe aerospace engineering.”

Sienna Burley achieved grades 9-8 in eight of her GCSE subjects. Sienna, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 8, is studying Biology, Chemistry, and Maths for her A-Levels, and she aspires to study medicine at university. Sienna, who started volunteering at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge this summer through the Young Persons Programme, said: “I am staying at King’s Ely for Sixth Form, and I am excited to study subjects that I love. I worked hard for my GCSEs, but I would have never got such good grades without the amazing support of my teachers. I am also looking forward to the Sixth Form socials!”

William Kirkup, who has been at King’s Ely since joining our Nursery in 2011, achieved all grades 9-7 in his subjects. He will be studying A-Levels in Classical Civilisation, Fine Art, and Film Studies here. William said: “I am considering a career in theatre set design, although that is not set in stone. I really enjoy my music and the music department here at King’s is exceptional, which is one of the reasons I am staying on for Sixth Form. I also love the fact that all our teachers know us as individuals, which means the support is strong.”

Twenty-five pupils from all corners of the globe also received their results today having studied the one-year IGCSE programme at King’s Ely. The two-term intensive course sees young people studying in their non-native speaking language, and the average number of subjects taken is six. King’s Ely is delighted to report another excellent set of IGCSE grades, with an overall pass rate of 94%. More than two thirds of IGCSE results were grades 9-6. Two students achieved grade 9s in all their subjects.

Mr Matthew Norbury, Director for International Students at King’s Ely, said: “Our IGCSE students arrive in England for the first time ever in September, and just seven months later they are successfully sitting their IGCSEs in an education system they have never experienced before. Every year I remain humbled by their achievements.”

West Buckland School

West Buckland School’s Amazing Year 11 Students Are Celebrating Today!

West Buckland School’s amazing Year 11 students are celebrating today

West Buckland School have achieved impressive GCSE results, with nearly half of the grades being 9-7, reflecting their hard work, resilience, and the school’s supportive environment, despite the continued impact of the pandemic on their education.

Year 11 students at West Buckland School are reaping the rewards of their remarkable hard work and resilience. As the rigours of the English exam system return to pre-pandemic levels, very nearly half the GCSE grades our young people in this cohort have achieved are grades 9-7. These are part of a trend of improvement in GCSE results in the post-pandemic period and we congratulate every student on their achievements. These results affirm that students at West Buckland thrive within a supportive environment that encompasses a comprehensive and well-rounded curriculum. It is noteworthy that the pandemic continues to have an effect on the education of our students. For many in this cohort, significant parts of their early secondary school years were during the pandemic. West Buckland’s successful provision of online taught lessons at this time provided the platform for these students to achieve such standout results.

Head, Phillip Stapleton said,

“Starting a new school is tough but for these pupils the world shut down due to Covid after just one term. Despite the difficult start, they have grown in positivity and resilience to become a wonderful group of young people.

I am delighted for them all and wish to thank the staff for their efforts over those years but also the parents for their continued support. Most of all to the pupils whose hard work has been rewarded today.

I acknowledge the demanding effort required to achieve great grades in numerous subjects, and I congratulate everyone on their individual accomplishments, with special mention for the seven students who secured a full set of top grades (7-9), and all those who have reached and exceeded their potential whatever those grades are.

Importantly, they reflect the character values which have become central to the school’s ethos, developing into honest, respectful, kind, resilient and curious adults. They are prepared to apply knowledge and skills across a range of disciplines while maintaining a broad and balanced approach to life. The school is very proud, and they now are set to live exciting futures.”

Mr Matt Brimson, Deputy Head Academic and Head of Sixth Form, added:

“It is particularly gratifying to witness West Buckland students performing exceptionally well across a variety of subjects, from geography to physics, music to Spanish. The sustained efforts over the past two years have yielded exceptional results that will prepare them for the next stage of their education.

“We eagerly anticipate the return of most of our students in September as they continue into our Sixth Form, along with the many new students joining us from local schools and beyond.”

A range of subjects have achieved exceptional grades. Over half our artists, utilising exceptional facilities and support from their teachers, achieved the top two grades (8-9), including Jinx M-M who was one of the highest scoring students in England. An exceptional three-quarters of students in geography, music, Spanish and physics achieved grades 9-7. This success in such a diversity of subjects demonstrates the importance the school places on a broad and accessible curriculum.

Jinx was one of seven pupils who secured high grades in all their subjects. Together with Zina B, Mia B, Megan B, Sofia E-C, Karen T and Toryn P they have secured GCSE grades 7-9 across the board. Talented athletes Archie S and Toryn P gained 16 grade 8/9 grades between them while competing at a high level.

Many of those achieving a full set of top grades have done so while pursuing a busy and impressive extra-curricular programme. These students have continued to represent the school in sports, the performing arts and other activities during Year 11 and have shown excellent organisational skills in balancing these commitments with strong academic performance. Congratulations must also go to members of our boarding community some of whom have achieved exceptional sets of results, including Angie L, Michael Y, Shelby T and Vincent G.

The pass rate in the core subjects of English Language and maths has also been excellent: 94.3% in English and 100% in maths. The results in these subjects is testament to the time and effort of the West Buckland teaching staff both within the classroom and as part of our specific intervention and support programme.

Head of Middle School, Michael Burstow, extends his congratulations to all students for their achievements and highlights how their successes have been nurtured by compassionate and integral academic and pastoral care, which enables our students to flourish and evolve into accomplished leaders and independent learners. “At West Buckland, we offer personalised guidance that extends past GCSEs, enabling many students to achieve exceptional results and promising futures. It has been brilliant to see many of our students showing great resilience, overcoming challenges they may have faced and achieving GCSE grades which reflect their potential. This will certainly stand them in good stead in the next stages of their education and beyond. They have been a wonderful year group and we wish them all the best for their next chapter.”

The school does not rest on its laurels and continues to review its curriculum to provide more opportunities for our students. While most students take 9 subjects, some undertake additional examinations, including Chinese, additional mathematics, astronomy, or a higher project qualification with many of our top achievers this year taking 10 or 11 different subjects. From this September, our students can access three new GCSE-equivalent qualifications. We are offering combined science as an alternative to studying separate science subjects, as well as an international GCSE in Global Perspectives which develops learners’ global outlook and a range of transferrable skills. We are also offering the Cambridge National in sport science in place of the physical education GCSE. All three qualifications offer something different for our students and we are looking forward to inviting our cohorts for these new subjects in two weeks’ time.

Monkton Combe School

Monkton Students Celebrate Outstanding GCSE Results and HPQ Success

Monkton students are celebrating outstanding GCSE and Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) results.

This year’s cohort attained top grades across a wide range of subjects with an impressive 74% of students recording 9-6 grades and 100% of HPQs being graded at A*.

Among the many successes, particular mention goes to one of Monkton’s top achievers Toby J. Toby is a military boarder who joined Monkton Prep in Year 6 and received grade 9 in all eleven of his GCSE subjects. His HPQ was on whether additive manufacturing should be used within the Military, focusing on the utility of 3D printing and similar technologies in 21st century conflicts. Toby has not only excelled academically this year but also on the river having trialled for the Team GB rowing squad as well as rowing for Monkton Senior in the Henley Regatta.

Another standout achiever was Anna B, who achieved an impressive seven grade 9s and two grade 8s in her exams. Anna has been with Monkton since Nursery and gone through every stage of the school. She excelled across a diverse range of subjects earning top marks, amongst others, in Music, Biology, Chemistry and Art.

Jack Y, a Monkton academic scholar, got eight 9s and two 8s. He celebrated his GCSE success alongside his HPQ, where he received an A* getting full marks for his research into the use of armed drones in modern warfare.

Anna H, one of Monkton’s Music Scholars, achieved six 9s, three 8s and a 7. Anna has been fully involved in all of the school’s concerts and was a co-leader (with her father) in the New Year Ceilidh.

Grace G is from a Missionary family and joined Monkton Prep in Year 7. She excelled with four 9s, four 8s and a 7. She also achieved an A* for her HPQ on research into the most effective factors to reduce reoffending in Norwegian prisons.

This year at Monkton, all students that studied for the Higher Project Qualification gained A* grades – an outstanding result. Victoria Armand-Smith, Deputy Head of Academic, praised the opportunity Monkton offers; “The HPQ is a fantastic qualification, students learn research methods, time management skills and independence while taking a deep dive into a topic of their choice. The qualification is a perfect segue into the EPQ, and at the same time develops skills students can use in their A level studies, University and beyond.”

Principal at Monkton, Chris Wheeler, was full of praise for this year’s cohort; “There have been some exceptional results this year but no statistics capture the individual stories of those who battled with Maths to reach the result they needed to study Psychology or the dyslexic who achieved the requirements for Theology in their English papers.” He added: “Behind all of the grades are a thousand and one stories and each one tells of courage, hard work and ambition.”

More House School

Success for Neurodiversity

Young people with diagnosed special educational needs often believe that academic success is impossible for them. However, yet again students at More House School in Frensham have beaten the odds, gaining GCSE and A’ Level grades better than they or their parents had imagined.

Celebrated internationally as a leader for aspirational special needs education, More House School, Frensham is the largest and leading specialist school in the United Kingdom. The school has grown in recent years to more than 500 pupils, many of whom are boarders. All pupils have diagnosed learning challenges but study a mainstream, academic curriculum, with many students progressing to university.

This summer’s Year 11 cohort is celebrating extraordinary achievements in their GCSE and Level 2 BTEC results. Despite 77% of students having an Education, Health and Care plan which demonstrates complex special needs, More House pupils beat the England national average for achieving grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) at GCSE. They also beat the national averages for passes in GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics.

Headmaster, Jonathan Hetherington, recognised as “fantastic” the achievement of young people with literacy, language-processing and attention difficulties achieving exam results better than national averages. He commented “More House School’s mission is to empower our pupils to transform their futures” and spoke of the importance of raising aspirations and building students’ self-belief.

The school’s 61 Year 11 students achieved 70% of GCSE and BTEC results at grades 9 to 4, or the BTEC equivalent of Distinction* to Level 2 Pass. 33% of pupils secured at least one grade 9 to 7 or BTEC Distinction* to Distinction (equivalent to the old categories of A* and A). 75% secured at least one good pass in a science.

Mr Hetherington congratulated his students on their success, highlighting their tenacity and perseverance in the face of challenge. He praised the expertise and dedication of the school’s staff, citing the school’s unique model of therapeutic intervention complementing adaptive classroom teaching, focusing on supporting four core pillars: language, attention, working-memory and processing.

More House School is judged to be Outstanding in every category by schools’ inspectorate Ofsted and was most recently inspected last November. The school is a registered charity and provides specialist training for teachers, special needs coordinators and school leaders locally and across the country, both for state-maintained schools and the independent sector. Last week, it celebrated its Sixth Form students’ A’ Level and BTEC Level 3 results, with the majority of leavers progressing to university.

Leighton Park School

Families were celebrating at Leighton Park this morning, with the School seeing an increase of 8 percentage points in 9-7 grades. 56% of grades were 9-7, with a whopping 41% of grades at 9-8 and 21% of grades at 9.

Leighton Park’s STEAM academic departments achieved particularly strong results, with the proportion of grades 9-7 shown in brackets, including Geography (92%), Engineering (80%), Physics (67%), Combined Science (67%), Maths (62%), Chemistry (60%), Biology (60%), Music (60%) and Design Technology (55%). Leighton Park is one of very few schools in the UK to offer the Engineering GCSE, reflecting the School’s focus on teaching critical thinking and creative problem-solving.

English Literature and Language performed well with 58% and 59% grades 9-7 respectively. Languages overall did very well, including French AQA (100%), Japanese (100%), Russian (100%), Mandarin (89%) and German (80%). The school also offers a BTEC in Creative Media Production with seven students enjoying Distinction* or Distinction grades.

Deputy Head Academic, Alex, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled with these results. A rise of 8 percentage points at grades 9-7 is simply exceptional and reflects the hard work and dedication of students, staff and parents. This morning it was a real pleasure to see such joy on everyone’s faces. These results bode well for the future at Leighton Park.”

Two students achieved straight 9s, including Olivia whose sister Harriet also achieved three A*s in her A Levels last week. Olivia enthused: “I think these results are down to my amazing teachers and I can’t thank them enough.” Dr Randall, Olivia’s dad, commented on his daughters’ success: “We originally picked Leighton Park for Harriet as she has working memory issues. We knew the small class sizes would really help her. The School transformed Harriet with incredible support. Olivia followed because we were so happy with how the school helped Harriet. I’m not sure they could have achieved these results at another school. They are very different but Leighton Park has been fantastic for both of them.”

Matthew, Head of Leighton Park, was very pleased with the results: “The success we are celebrating today is a shared one. It reflects the close-knit community we nurture here, where students support each other, staff go above and beyond, and parents play a crucial role in our collective achievements. Our students have not only excelled academically but have done so with kindness, humility, and a deep respect for one another—qualities we value as much as their grades. We are also thrilled that almost all of our students will be continuing their educational journey with us, proceeding to our Sixth Form to pursue their chosen courses in our brand-new Sixth Form Study Centre, Grove. As they move forward, we are confident that they will continue to embody the Quaker values that define our school. We look forward to seeing the positive impact they will undoubtedly have on the wider world.”

Antigoni, who also achieved straight 9s, has been choosing between the School’s A Level and IB Diploma programmes and won one of the School’s prestigious IB Diploma Scholarships: “I would like to thank Duncan, Jenny, Gemma and Shabs for the extra sessions and the support when I doubted myself most. I’m really looking forward to being in the new Sixth Form Study Centre next year – it looks amazing! Thank you to all my teachers for putting the maximum possible effort into all my classes to help me achieve the best grades.” Antigoni’s mum, Alexandra, agreed: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the school as we had some tough moments through the year and we received fantastic support. I am so happy!”

Marcus, who received eight grade 9s and one 8 and an A in Global Perspectives alluded to Leighton Park’s award-winning personal development, with the School winning the national Independent Schools Association Award for Pupil Personal Development in 2022/23: “I’m pleased with my results. The past three years at the school have really helped me develop and grow, including in music and the sciences.”

Cali received five 9s, two 8s, two 7s and an A* in Global Perspectives also reflected on her wider development: “I’m feeling so happy about my results, the hard work paid off and I feel like it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of all my teachers throughout. Even when I didn’t believe in myself, they believed in me and for me that was the biggest factor in my success. It shows how far I have come and how much Leighton Park has helped me develop and excel. As a drama scholar, it’s been so amazing, the drama department is such a big part of my life. I’m staying at Leighton Park for Sixth Form studying Business, Geography and English Literature and I’m so excited to use the new Sixth Form Centre!”

Max who achieved six grade 6s, two 8s and a 7 as well as an A for Global Perspectives received an incredible 200 points out of 200 in the Maths GCSE exam: “I’m incredibly happy with my GCSE results. I’m staying on at Leighton Park to study Music, English and Maths at A Level after being a Music and Academic scholar. I found that I had many opportunities as a scholar to further my musical and academic performances and without that, I wouldn’t have even thought about doing the subjects I did at GCSE.”

Helen Taylor, our Assistant Head: Director of Sixth Form was delighted to see so many happy families: “I am looking forward to this fantastic Year 11 cohort moving on into the Sixth Form in September. This year is the largest number of newcomers to the Lower Sixth that we’ve ever had, and also the very fortunate group that are going to be the first to benefit from the wonderful new Grove Sixth Form Study Centre.”

Leighton Park won Senior School of the Year 2023-24 in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards and was also a Finalist in the prestigious Times Educational Supplement (TES) Awards for Independent Senior School of the Year 2023-24.

Leighton Park also won the ISA’s 2022-23 Award for Pupil Personal Development and has been celebrated by Muddy Stilettos in their 2024 Awards as a Finalist in their Most Inclusive School Award. The school is looking forward to the success continuing as we open our stunning new Sixth Form Centre in September 2024.

Bedales School

Unique Bedales curriculum replacing GCSEs

Bedales students are celebrating after receiving their GCSE and Bedales Assessed Course (BAC) results with over two thirds of grades 9-7 (equivalent to A*-A). Twenty-seven per cent of students achieved at least nine grades 9-7 with 10% achieving a clean sweep of at least nine grades 9/8 (equivalent to A*). Of these high performing students, 11 attended Bedales Prep or Pre-prep prior to progressing to Bedales Senior.

Bedales’ unique curriculum means that students currently take a combination of the School’s own BACs combined with GCSEs in five core subjects. Introduced in 2006, BACs are well established, and involve a broader range of content, choice and assessment methods than the traditional GCSE, enabling students to pursue their interests and talents. BACs benefit from annual external validation by experienced moderators and are recognised as a qualification by universities.

Will Goldsmith, Head of Bedales, commented:

“Congratulations to our students on these impressive results. I am delighted that their hard work has paid off. Our students have shown high levels of performance in both their GCSE and BAC subjects. As a school we do question the purpose of high stakes assessments in Year 11 which is why we are introducing more of our own courses to better serve the interests of our students and prepare them for A Level study. With many educationalists calling for change, Bedales is leading the way in showing what’s possible.”

Bedales has announced that it is further reducing the number of GCSEs taken by students down to two in Maths and English Language. BACs are offered as an alternative to GCSE for increased depth, more active learning and stimulating material, less prescriptive syllabuses and a wider range of assessments including group and individual projects, presentations, essays and portfolios in addition to written examinations.

Bedales students in Block 4 (Year 10) currently choose from the following BAC options: Ancient Civilisations; Art; Dance; Design (Product or Fashion); Digital Game Design; English Literature; Geography; Global Awareness; History; Music; Philosophy, Religion & Ethics; Outdoor Work; Sports Science; and Theatre Studies. New Bedales Assessed Courses under development are the Sciences and Modern Languages, including Japanese.

This summer, Bedales was recognised in The Edufuturists Awards 2024 which celebrates groundbreaking advancements in education. Awarded Independent School of the Year, Bedales was highlighted for challenging education norms with its unique education philosophy and curriculum that prioritises individual growth, creativity, and use of the outdoor environment. At a time when the Government has announced a review of the curriculum and assessment, BACs show other schools and policymakers an alternative that inspires students, motivates teachers, and better prepares young people for further study and work.
