West Buckland GCSE results reflect hard work and broad minds

West Buckland is delighted with this year’s GCSE results which reflect the hard work of students against a backdrop of a broad education.

GCSE results reflect the importance of academic study alongside a broad extra-curricular education.

After two years of disruption due to the pandemic, our Year 11 students have much to celebrate with their GCSE results. At West Buckland, we encourage our students to consider their academic achievements as part of their wider education, so keeping up with creative, sporting and other extra-curricular pursuits is integrated into school life.

The skills young people need should be delivered as part and parcel of a full education.

Phillip Stapleton, Headmaster, said: ‘A broad education is a rich experience, and this year I am particularly delighted by the performance of our pupils taking Art, Music, Drama, and English. These excellent results show the effort invested by teachers during the pandemic in teaching these subjects, which are difficult to teach online, and the hard work of the pupils involved.’

There are wonderful results across the board with over 80% of pupils gaining at least one or more top grades and ten pupils securing all top grades of 7-9. Anna Walker scooped a full set of Grade 9s while excelling in her musical activities. Other noteworthy results include Zac Johnson, who showed immense resilience in scoring ten grades of 7-9 whilst also playing cricket at a high level. Twins Michael and James Blackie gained a matching set of ten 7-9 grades while several students, including Angel Raji, Anna Walker and Isobel Lawrence all gained a double 9 in English.

Many of our students took extra subjects, including Additional Maths, other languages, and the HPQ independent research project while engaging fully in the wider extra-curricular programme on offer. It is in the combination of these areas that the characteristic values of confidence, critical thinking, creativity, courage, caring, commitment and curiosity are forged. These values define and set apart a West Buckland education.

All pupils receive focused and individual careers advice to help them with their next steps. The vast majority have chosen to continue their academic studies, mostly at WBS, and they will be joined by another 25 pupils from North Devon and from around the world.

Congratulations to all those in Year 11 and we wish everyone receiving their examination results today the very best.
