Students at Sidcot School are celebrating an impressive set of GCSE results, once again significantly above the national average. Sidcot students achieved 39.4% of grades between 9 to 7 (equivalent to A* to A) with 92% of scores between 9 and 4 (equivalent to A* to C). This put Sidcot students nearly 20% above the national average of 73.2% for grades 9 to 4.
Headmaster Iain Kilpatrick said: “We are extremely proud of what our students have achieved today. They have had a challenging time in preparing for GCSE during the restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic. However, this has not prevented them from performing fantastically well and developing key skills to take into Sixth Form. At Sidcot we pride ourselves on providing more than just exam results. We offer a broad education for students with opportunities and experiences beyond the confines of the classroom. The outcome of this approach are well-rounded individuals equipped to lead interesting, purposeful and adventurous lives.”
There were a number of standout performances this year including;
Jess Barber (16) from Wells, achieved an outstanding eight grade 9s and one grade 8. Jess said, “I’m so happy with my results, I really couldn’t have achieved them without the help of all my teachers, especially throughout lockdown. I’m now really looking forward to continuing my studies at Sidcot in the Sixth Form where I will be doing A Levels in Chemistry, Biology and Maths.”
Jamie O’Driscoll (16) from Clevedon was awarded six grade 9s and three grade 8s. Jamie said, “I was absolutely gobsmacked with my results – I sat and stared at them for 30 minutes! This has really given me the confidence to continue my studies next year. Sidcot has helped me so much, the teachers have been so supportive academically but I’ve also received lots of encouragement from my tutors who are always happy to help.” Jamie will be taking English Literature, History and Maths in September.
Chris French (16) from Blackford achieved six grade 9s, one grade 8 and two grade 7s. Chris said, “I was really excited with my results, they were better than I imagined! My teachers really helped me to get a deeper understanding of the concepts which stood me in good stead when it came to answering the questions in my exams.” Chris will be studying Maths, Computing, Physics and Chemistry in the Sixth Form.
Max Lawrenson (16) from Weston-Super-Mare was awarded five grade 9s, one grade 8 and four grade 7s. Max said, “I was really pleased with my results, my teachers have really helped me, offering extra support and one-to-one sessions. I’m going to study Computing, Physics, Maths and Further Maths at A Level as I hope to go on to study Maths at University.”
Headmaster Iain Kilpatrick continued: “The success of our students is testament to their commitment to study and the support they have received from their teachers and families. However, success in the classroom has not come at the expense of their holistic experience. We are a busy school where students develop skills and talents in a wide range of areas – not least a sense of care and service to others. Those who have recently received their results should be justifiably delighted with what they have achieved, but equally proud of the young people they have become.”
The majority of GCSE students from Sidcot will progress into the school’s Sixth Form where students are given the option of studying A Levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTECs in Sport and Business. The Sixth Form Centre at Sidcot is currently undergoing a multi-million pound redevelopment which is due to be complete early in 2023.
