TIOB – Boarding Leadership Conference Day 1 – Effective ways to develop you and your boarding team followed by Authentic Leadership

To accommodate the busy schedules of TIOB members, we have decided to restructure the TIOB Boarding leadership conference and split the day into three sessions across three separate dates.

• 13^th March: 10:30am-12:30pm : Effective ways to develop you and your boarding team followed by Authentic Leadership
• 22^nd May 11:30am-13:30pm: Marketing and Development followed by Recruiting and Retaining boarding staff
• 16^th June 11:30am-13:30pm: Strategic management of boarding followed by Crisis management case studies.

Should you not be able to attend all three dates, all sessions will be recorded and made available to delegates.

This conference promises to ensure that individuals in boarding can reflect on their performance in a range of spheres within their role. You will be presented with a range of perspectives, support and inspiration from experts in the field. By the end of the conference, you should be able to evaluate and develop a strategic plan allowing you to be more effective and focused in your role.

10:30 – 11:30 – Effective ways to develop you and your boarding team

Boarding is ever changing. It is vital to ensure that your boarding skill set is up to date and that your team is inspired and motivated to ensure their CPD is relevant. This session looks at what the boarding team needs in its toolkit to be relevant, responsive to the 21^st century boarder.

11:30 – 12:30 Authentic leadership: getting the best out of your team

This session will explore what authenticity means in a leadership context, and why it might be important.  We will discuss how the leaders of teams in boarding can earn credibility and respect by being clear about, and true to, what they stand for as leaders, and how this can contribute to ensuring their work and the work of their teams is as successful as possible.

Will Goldsmith, Head, St George’s School, Windsor Castle

William Goldsmith has a career spanning almost twenty years in UK primary education and leadership. He is currently Head of St George’s School Windsor Castle, having previously run St Leonards Junior School, St Andrews, where he embedded the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes, as well as a sector-leading approach to outdoor learning. William is passionate about a skills and mindset based learning philosophy; has a background in emotional wellbeing and mental health; and strongly believes in the value of learning outside the classroom. He is a founding fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching; fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts; and has a Masters in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford.

Jill Berry, Leadership Development Consultant, J Berry Associates Ltd 

Jill taught for thirty years across six different schools in the UK, state and independent, and she taught adults to GCSE and A level in the evenings for several years. She was a head for the last ten years of her time in schools. Since 2010 she has completed a doctorate, researching the transition to headship and written a book about it: ‘Making the Leap – Moving from Deputy to Head’ (Crown House, 2016) (also now available as an audio book); and carried out an extensive range of leadership development work. She has given a TEDx presentation on the subject of ‘Take a Second Look: Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Others’ and she has published three short novels.
