Course outline

School Nurses provide advice and education on the health and wellbeing of a young person. Heath care promotion and identification of ill health is part of the role. This course discusses the benefits of carrying out medical assessments of pupils in the school setting.The health child program 5-19 discusses the guidance outlines for those in education settings to enable and support young people with their health and wellbeing enabling them to take ownership of their own medical issues, stay healthy and develop a healthy lifestyle. This course reflects on how we can support this.

Jane Graham, Director, Hieda

Trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background, Many of them in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilise and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation, all medical conditions, and trauma.

She went on to teach these skills to student nurses, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group.

Dr Jaheed Khan 

Mr Jaheed Khan is a NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and practices privately at Moorfields Private and Clinica London, Harley Street, London.

He graduated from the Royal Free Hospital and University College London Medical School in 1997. He completed primary ophthalmic training at St Thomas’ Hospital and was later awarded a medical doctorate (MD) for his scientific research into new treatments for diabetic maculopathy at Kings College London. He completed higher ophthalmic training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital. He was then selected for advanced sub-specialist fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he developed expertise in cataract surgery and management of conditions affecting the retina which include diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration.

He has presented internationally and published widely on new medical retina imaging techniques and latest retinal treatments. He has also written three medical retina chapters in the award winning textbook ‘Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology’ cited as one of the 100 most important ophthalmic books of the 20th century. He has also contributed to the development of the latest treatments for retinal vein occlusion such as intravitreal ozurdex. He currently leads a new service at two sites that delivers intravitreal lucentis treatment for diabetic macular oedema.

Mr Khan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth), a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the European Society of Retinal Specialists (EURETINA).

Mr Khan is renowned for his teaching excellence and is a clinical supervisor for the London School of Ophthalmology with particular interests in developing teaching programmes for optometrists and nurses.

Dr Alex Maxwell 

Dr Alex Maxwell is a GP, School doctor, Sports doctor and Lifestyle Medic. He is the School doctor for Harrow School and Whitgift School and finds immense satisfaction in the varied challenges in these roles. His particular interests are sleep, nutrition, physical activity, mental wellbeing and the psychology of health behaviour change.  

His aim as a school doctor is to provide the framework for the child to leave school with the tools to manage their mental and physical health for the rest of their lives.
