Why should you attend?
This workshop will explore the many issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to Houseparent and the associated responsibility for running a House is an exciting prospect, however it can also be a stressful period.
This seminar will provide an opportunity to review and consider key issues relating to students, staff, policies and procedures as well as the demands of managing the physical building itself.

Speaker(s): Rebecca and Tom Jarrett
Tom was educated at Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham and The Queen’s College, University of Oxford where he studied Modern History. He worked in advertising for eight years before deciding to seek a different path and completing a PGCE in 2013. He joined LVS Ascot the same year as Head of History and Politics before taking over as Housemaster of a co-educational sixth form boarding house which he runs in partnership with Rebecca. They have three children - Daisy (6), Martha (4) and Barney (3). Tom and Rebecca co-authored the BSA Briefing Paper ‘Taking on a New Boarding House’.
Rebecca also studied at Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham, reading Biological Anthropology at Cambridge followed by a PGCE in secondary science at Oxford. Four years teaching at Cokethorpe, a co-ed day school in West Oxfordshire cultivated Rebecca’s passion for pastoral care and in 2009 she moved to Wellington College, Berkshire where she was an Assistant Housemistress, head of lacrosse and taught Biology for five years. During her time at Wellington Rebecca completed the BSA Certificate in Professional Development, focussing on new boarder induction and the care of bereaved boarders. In 2014 Rebecca moved to LVS Ascot where she and Tom run a mixed sixth form boarding house.
