The school was established in 1977 under the sponsorship of His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said. We are a leading bilingual school of the region (English & Arabic) with the aim of producing students with an international perspective whilst providing a broad and balanced education. The Council of International Schools accreditation was first received in May 2018. The school started the boarding scholarship programme in 1980, and it is for Omani Boys only, with all boarders fully funded by the Royal Office followed by Petroleum Development Oman who started funding scholars in 1989. There was a further expansion in 2014.

The programme fully funds boys from all areas of the Sultanate. Over the last 10 years the school has seen major construction and redevelopment including: a new boarding house for 80 students, a new cafeteria to seat 300, a STEAM centre, a Design and Technology lab, the erection of a building to transfer the pool to an indoor facility, a 400m synthetic running track with grass field and 1200 seat stadium, and a new mosque.
