Cheam School is one of the oldest Prep Schools in the country with its origins in the seventeenth century. The school became co-educational in 1997 and offers parents the opportunity for education from 3-13+ for their sons and daughters. Set in 100 acres of glorious countryside it is the perfect school for children to spend their early school days. Classes are small (maximum18) and pupils are prepared for the major senior independent schools. The classrooms are light and bright with interactive white boards throughout and excellent facilities for Design and Technology, art, IT science, sport and a strong music department. Most of the children learn a musical instrument with choirs for all ages, several orchestras and a large jazz band. The sporting life at Cheam is very impressive and all the children love it. Rugby, football and cricket are the major team games for the boys whilst netball, rounders and hockey for the girls. There is a heated outdoor swimming pool for use during the Summer Term and 6 all-weather tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course; so there is something for everyone.

Boarding is either full time or flexi. Children can do just two nights a week if they like. We were assured that this is not at all unsettling and that they seem to love it, opting in and out as and when. The majority of the top year board full time in preparation for their next school. Full time means weekly, they go home after games on Saturday afternoon and return in time for lessons on Monday morning. Most come from within a 15 mile radius of the school although there is a small London contingent and the occasional child from overseas. Dorms are upstairs in the main building, boys on one floor and girls on another. Homely, welcoming rooms with a variety of duvet covers and lots of teddies. Always one or two older pupils in with the younger ones. Great pile of bags on the landings waiting to be collected by flexis at the end of the day. Recent’outstanding’ boarding certificate from Ofsted.
