Why should you attend?
This day seminar should be attended by anyone already managing or aspiring to manage a boarding house or a boarding team. Running a boarding house requires leadership and managements skills that bring together staff into a cohesive team, to give a high quality experience for the boarders and their parents. Individual houses will have their own character and, equally, a cohesion is required throughout school. Clear vision and a sound understanding of ‘what good looks like’ are vital ingredients to success. This course will provide discussion and practical ideas of ways in which to achieve a well-run and thriving boarding environment.
The day seminar looks at the skills of leadership and management. Delegates will explore leadership styles and reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses. Building an effective team takes clear vision and a good understanding of the different skills required to create a successful and high-performing team. Effective pastoral care is all about people and there is no aspect of boarding that does not involve communication. What causes you to waste time? How can you make time (including for yourself)?

For those working in a boarding environment, this day seminar is aimed at exploring the fundamental elements of managing a boarding environment. Whether you are already in the job or aspire to take up the challenges, this will give you a very practical insight into the role of building and working with a team, so vital to delivering high quality pastoral care.

Speaker: Andrew Lewin, BSA Director of International
Andrew Lewin joined the BSA as Director of Training & International in August 2017. He manages the Training and International team within the BSA, delivering the largest CPD programme to boarding staff in the world. Prior to joining the BSA, he lived and worked in boarding schools literally all his life. He has been the Head in three boarding schools, as well as Deputy Head, Housemaster, Head of Geography, Master i/c Rugby, Hockey and Cricket and Director of Development.
He has been an ISI Team Inspector and a Governor of an independent boarding school. He has also served on the local safeguarding children's boards in North Yorkshire and Cheshire, where he organised and delivered training for both local authorities and independent schools.
