Course outline:

As highlighted in the news over the last couple of years, young men may choose role models that we might not choose for ourselves. While modern definitions of masculinity may be changing, young men still need guidance, positive role models and an encouraging approach.ย ย 

Training topics will include:

  • A nuanced understanding of masculinity including the influence of societal norms, cultural expectations and personal experiences in its formation.ย 
  • The importance of communication skills and emotional intelligence in building healthy connectionsย 
  • Harmful stereotypes and biasesย 

Learning outcomes:

  • Be able to critically analyse and articulate the concept of positive masculinityย 
  • Develop a strategy to promote, foster and reward positive masculinityย 
  • Design and create inclusive and safe spaces for diverse expressions of masculinity.ย

Speaker:

Tim Jarvis, Senior Master – Pastoral Care, Michaelhouse

Tim Jarvis is currently the Senior Master: Pastoral Care at Michaelhouse, a South African boarding school for senior boys in KwaZulu-Natal. He holds Honours degrees in Education and Psychology from the University of Exeter and the University of South Africa respectively. Tim was the conference lead at researchED Pretoria, the inaugural researchED conference in South Africa, and then programme manager for the follow up event in Cape Town. Tim has also served on the Global Advisory Board of the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

Tim enjoys writing and is the author of the blog, โ€˜Thereโ€™s a โ€˜Hadeda in my Gardenโ€™, which considers educational issues, boarding school life, and teen well-being. He has written articles for Independent Education in South Africa and the Guardian Teachers network in the UK. He also featured on IBSCโ€™s Exploring Boys’ Education Podcast on the pastoral care of boys.
