Hieda – Transition to university: transferring support and records

Course outline

This course looks at the planning of a pupil moving to university from a secondary education establishment with a medical condition that requires support.  

Training topics will include: 

  • Preparing the pupil: a guide to encouraging independence 
  • Research your university 
  • On arrival 
  • Support during the university years 
  • Engaging with the university prior to starting

Learning outcomes: 

  • To know how to support a student who wants to attend university with a medical condition 
  • To be able to prepare them for the experience – encourage independence 
  •  To understand what universities can offer

Trainers: 

Jane Graham, Director, Hieda

Trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background, Many of them in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilise and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation, all medical conditions, and trauma.

She went on to teach these skills to student nurses, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group.


Dan Richardson, MSc, SENr

Dan Richardson is a performance and health nutrition expert, supporting schools and student athletes to develop and grow. He currently works with over 25 schools within the UK, supporting both health and sports nutrition programmes. Previously, he has worked as a nutritionist with professional teams such as Manchester City FC and Sale Sharks. He is also the nutrition columnist at The Hockey Paper providing nutrition advice to readers. His approach to nutrition is simple food-first and focuses on utilizing the latest nutrition research.
