- Audience: This training day is designed for sports staff, support staff and medical staff who are responsible for managing sports injuries in the school or club setting.

Course outline
This sports injury course covers types of injuries around the body, including their cause and treatments. The holder will gain a thorough understanding of how to prevent and minimise injuries that occur during sports pursuits.
Training topics will include:
- Head injuries, including concussion and GRTP (Graduated return to play protocol)
- Acute musculoskeletal injuries
- Limb injuries
- Sports first aid.
Learning outcomes:
- To be able to assess sport injuries and have an understanding of how they occur
- To understand treatment and management of sport injuries
- To develop a knowledge of the principle behind the rehabilitation of sports injuries.

The session will discuss the framework on how to approach all musculoskeletal examinations, assessing the seriousness of the injury and principles of safe early management.

Dr Sam Barke, Head of Sports Medicine, Meliora Medical Group
Sam is Head of Sports Medicine and leads the Head Injury & Concussion Care service at Meliora Medical Group.
He has been at the forefront of improving the management of head injuries in amateur sport and in children for the last 10 years. He is recognised as an expert in the area and has presented nationally and internationally on the topic. He has also been featured by The Times, Rugby World magazine, BT Sport and BBC News speaking about concussion.
Sam has extensive experience in both the amateur and elite sporting environments. He is an RFU academy doctor, a match-day doctor for Harlequins, lead doctor for the Rosslyn Park National School 7s, medical officer for the International Weightlifting Federation, and has worked at the Commonwealth Games, the World Athletics Championships and the World Triathlon Series.
Sam trained at Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals, London. Following junior doctor posts he undertook surgical training, specialising in Trauma & Orthopaedics. He worked in young adult hip surgery for over a decade and has further qualifications in sports medicine and pre-hospital care.
Dr Alex Maxwell, GP & Head of School Medicine, Meliora Medical Group
Alex is a practicing GP, Sports Medic & Lifestyle Medic. His focus is to support and empower people to achieve and maintain their ideal version of health and wellbeing. He seeks first to understand and then to guide. He absolutely loves seeing someone making progress to improve their health and wellbeing.
A particular focus is the health and wellbeing of Children; hence his involvement in childhood Sports Medicine and being a School Doctor. His aim as a school doctor is to provide the framework for the child to leave school with the tools to manage their mental and physical health for the rest of their lives.
Liz Robson, Head of Physiotherapy & Concussion Clinical Specialist, Meliora Medical Group
Liz is Concussion Clinical Specialist and lead physiotherapist at Meliora Medical Group.
After a first career in the outward-bound industry, Liz trained at St Mary’s University in Twickenham, where she read Sports Science, Health, Nutrition and Exercise before going on to read for a Masters in Physiotherapy at the University of Northumbria.
Liz gained her early experience working as an MSK physiotherapist in private practice, before going on to develop specialist expertise in sports physiotherapy, with a particular interest on pitch-side physiotherapy, concussion management, sports rehab and strength and conditioning. Liz has provided pitch-side physiotherapy for the Women’s Rugby World Cup and was for almost a decade the team physiotherapist for the Norway Women’s rugby team. She is the medical director for Lambs Rugby and event physiotherapist for the Canada Cup ski competition.
In recent years, Liz has developed a wealth of experience in schools-based contexts, where her expertise across a wide range of sports has allowed her to build a comprehensive specialist practice supporting the treatment and rehabilitation of adolescent athletes across a broad spectrum of sporting disciplines.
Dr Mike Forsythe, Deputy head of sports medicine, Meliora Medical Group
Mike is Deputy Head of Sports Medicine and leads the complex case clinic of head injury & concussion service at Meliora Medical Group. He is a GP with a special interest in adolescent health and sports medicine.
He has worked in numerous elite sporting settings, including being doctor for London Irish rugby club. He continues to act as an Independent Match day Doctor for Premiership Rugby, a role that involves identifying and assessing cases of suspected concussion in professional athletes.
Mike graduated from Guys, King’s and St Thomas medical school in 2010. He qualified as a GP in 2018, having taken time out of the training programme to work as an A&E registrar in Sydney, Australia. He has further qualifications in sports medicine and pre-hospital care.
