HIEDA – Clinical skills training (with Meliora Medical Group)

Course outline:

This clinical skills package of two skills days, culminating in an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) style assessment, provides updates on medical conditions and refreshes practical skills. The aim is to support clinical staff with their training and development needs, help them to raise the standards of care provided in schools and meet the needs of CPD as part of their revalidation. This will also be accomplished by networking with other nurses to share and recognise good practice.

Day 1 Training topics will include:

  • History taking
  • Respiratory assessment
  • Cardio assessment
  • Abdominal assessment
  • Head injury assessment
  • ENT assessment including use of otoscope, eye testing and inhaler techniques

Day 2 Training topics will include a carousel of

  • Sexual Health assessment
  • Mental Health Assessment
  • MSK assessment
  • Revision session in preparation for the OSCE

The clinical day will involve a number of trainers teaching delegates in small groups, in rotation, on topics that are systems based

We will practise clinical skills such as History taking, ENT assessment, chest sounds, heart sounds, ABDO assessment,  inhaler techniques and vision testing.

There will be a booklet to complete and every person will be observed and signed off for each skill.

The aim is to refresh or learn new skills and enhance basic physical assessments.

Learning outcomes:

  • To be updated on the common medical issued found in schools
  • To expand knowledge on assessment and history taking
  • To explore opportunities to support unwell pupils
  • To network with other school nurses
  • To share knowledge and information and recognise areas of good practice.

Day 1

08:00: Arrival and Registration

08:30 – 09:00: Introductions and plan for course

09:00 – 11:00: Session 1 – History Taking

11:00 – 11:30: Break

11:30 – 13:30: Session 2 – Respiratory / Cardio assessment

13:30 – 14:00: Lunch

14:00 – 16:00: Session 3 – Abdominal Assessment & Urinalysis 

16:00 – 16:15: Break

16:15 – 17:00: Session 4 – Head Injury Assessment

17:00 – 17:30: Session 5 – ENT Assessment 

Day 2

08:30 – Registration and Coffee

09:00 – 10:30: Carousell Sessions – delegates will do each session

    • Session 1 – Sexual Health
    • Session 2- MSK Assessment
    • Session 3 – Mental Health Assessment
    • Session 4 – Revision of day 1 before OSCE

10:30 – 11:00: Break

11:00 – 12:30 – Carousell sessions continue

12:30 – 13:00 – Lunch

13:00 – 16:30 – Assessments

16:30 – End

Trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children Rosie came to school nursing in the independent sector 16 years ago. With a passion for boarding pastoral and health care Rosie has developed an interest in the understanding and development of the health needs of boarding school students.

 

 

Dr Alex Maxwell, Head of School Medicine & CQC Registered Manager

Alex leads our School Medicine department. Through reflective quality improvement he ensures our School Doctor service provision is gold-standard and ever improving. Alex supports and guides our clinical team and is responsible for upholding the high clinical standards we strive for at Meliora Medical Group.

Alex is also responsible for looking after and supporting the health and wellbeing of our team. We all understand the importance of self-care and know this contributes to our ability to deliver our service to the best of our ability.

Liz Robson, Head of Physiotherapy and Concussion Clinical Specialist

As well as managing our team of physios, she is the first point of call for our client organisations if they have medical queries and plays a crucial role in helping our clients make good early decisions when managing head injuries.  Liz works closely with our team of doctors to ensure the highest level of care is provided from day of injury until complete recovery.

Liz is a strong advocate of sport for all and believes in a proactive approach to skills- and knowledge-based training that mitigates risk while providing optimal outcomes for players at all levels.
