Hieda – Bereavement and breaking bad news

At certain times we may be involved in breaking bad news or dealing with someone who is newly bereaved. This course looks at the process and support available that could be utilized to help during this period. The holder will learn skills to be able to empathize with and manage the ongoing wellbeing of the affected person. The session will teach delegates how to have sensitive conversations that may well impact on how the affected person deal with their situation or loss.
Training topics will include
- Setting the scene preparing for the conversation
- Communication skills
- How does a patient feel?
- The bereavement and grieving process
- Role play – a variety of scenarios will be utilized to reflect the candidates’ backgrounds on the day.

Speaker: Jane Graham, Director, Hieda
Trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Jane has 31 years of nursing background; 17 of which is in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilize and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation, all medical conditions, and trauma.
She went on to teach these skills to student nurses, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe, an awarding body approved by the HSE.

Hi I have two albums of photos taken at what appears to be a boarding school in 1945/6. I don't know the school - there is only one photo showing any part of the exterior. The photos are excellent - the master who took them was clearly a gifted amateur. I'd like to try to trace the school and ask if they'd like the albums for their archives. I've attempted to scan the one with the exterior. It's firmly glued into the album, so apologies for the poor quality.
