Content overview:

We understand how challenging it might be to have international students from different language backgrounds and with different language needs in the classroom. This webinar will focus on how to improve reading skills for EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners and how to identify potential barriers for them when they are learning to read in English. This webinar will equip you with essential strategies to support EAL learners with their reading skills.

Training topics will include:

  • Diversity of EAL learners in independent schools: acknowledge that EAL learners are not a homogenous group and understand why they might be different
  • Components of reading: learn what constitutes reading in a different language
  • Challenges when EAL learners are learning to read in English: recognise that EAL learners face barriers when learning to read in English and how to overcome this
  • Importance of reading in the home language: understand why it is important to maintain the use of home languages
  • Top tips and best strategies for developing and improving reading skills for EAL learners: learn important techniques to apply in your everyday teaching to support reading for EAL learners

Speaker: 

Iva Miteva, EAL Specialist at Across Cultures and the Learning Village

Iva is an EAL Specialist with Across Cultures who has taught EAL to international pupils from different countries and educational backgrounds for over 18 years. She has also led and managed the EAL provision in a number of independent schools and educational organisations as Head of EAL and EAL Coordinator working with EAL teams, teachers, Headteachers, senior leadership teams and admission teams. Iva has a PG Dip in Educational Leadership and Management and a Master’s in Applied Linguistics. Iva is fluent in four languages and she is passionate about multilingualism, valuing diversity and the importance of maintaining children’s home languages. Iva often shares her extensive experience as a linguist in webinars and courses led by Across Cultures and the Learning Village. She enjoys creating scaffolded resources for EAL learners and also writes EAL topic-based articles for the Across Cultures blog.
