Queen Mary’s seeks to appoint an inspirational, dynamic and enthusiastic Head of Food Technology and DT, with the ability to inspire and motivate children of all abilities, and to stimulate the pupils’ real interest and involvement in Food Technology and DT in the Senior School.

The outstanding candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, leading and developing a thriving Food Technology and DT Department at this successful school.

As a boarding and day school we maintain the traditions of boarding, working an extended teaching day (08:30-16:40 plus an occasional evening duty until 20:00). Girls from Year 8 upwards have Saturday morning lessons.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate empathy with and commitment to the ethos of an academic, independent boarding and day school fit for the 21st century.

The following is provided as an overview of the main responsibilitiesLeadership and Management of Others:

  • Lead by example, providing inspiration and motivation, and embodiment for the pupils, staff, governors, parents and wider community, the vision, purpose and leadership of the school.
  • To take full responsibility for all aspects of Food Technology & DT and the teaching of Food Technology and DT throughout the senior school.

Policy, Strategic Direction and Development

  • Develop and promote a development plan for Food Technology and DT across the whole school and keep these under regular review to policy and planning take account of the school’s changing needs and are appropriate to the full range of pupils’ needs.
  • Take the lead in ensuring that whole-school policies and strategies are embedded in planning throughout the phases.•Assist the Leadership Team with the development and monitoring of policies and plans for the School as a whole to ensure that they take appropriate account of the Food Technology and DT department.

Teaching and Learning

  • Working with the Assistant Head: Senior School. Lead the development and monitoring of curriculum provision to ensure continuity and progression, and the development of cross key stage/cross curricular links.
  • Promote excellence and inspiration in learning and teaching as a lead practitioner and leading by example; consult and advise colleagues in order to establish creative, responsive and effective approaches to Food Technology and DT throughout the senior school.
  • Planning and preparing lessons and schemes of work in accordance with departmental and school policies.
  • Setting and marking works as required, recording and assessing progress.
  • Termly reports.
  • Progress of pupils: differentiating for ability as required.
  • Playing a full role in departmental life: sharing resources, taking part in trips and visits.
  • Form Tutor.
  • To attend Head of Department Meetings.

Pastoral care and safeguarding

  • Monitor, evaluate and assess the pastoral care of pupils, ensuring continuous and consistent focus on pupils’ achievement anddevelopment: moral, spiritual, physical, cultural and social.
  • Coordinate responses to the pastoral needs of pupils throughout the School.

Professional Development

  • Regularly review your own practice, set personal targets and take responsibility for your own development
  • Ensure that training needs within the phases are identified, appropriately met, and that all members of staff are active in their own personal and continuous professional development.
  • INSET initiatives to offer support, guidance, innovation and motivation to colleagues, in liaison with the Assistant Head: Senior School
  • Annual Appraisal

Training & development of self and others

  • Build effective partnerships with parents to ensure:
  1. a shared understanding between school and home about pupil progression, and how parents can support their child
  2. an excellent local reputation for the school through the promotion, profile and success of the pupils
  3. co-curricular activities that enrich the timetabled curriculum experiences
  • Promote excellence and the reputation of the school through events (parents’ meetings, Open Days, workshops etc.)
  • Develop links outside the school in order to increase opportunities for sharing good practice, e.g. learning opportunities for pupils.
  • Hold regular Department meetings to:
  1. establish common, progressive and detailed schemes of work for each year group;
  2. monitor and to assess progress within each year group and of individuals;
  3. ensure that common aims, objectives and standards are established;
  4. communicate, where relevant, issues raised in Heads of Department meetings which affect the Food Technology and DT Department;
  5. discuss and agree methodology in order to ensure that effective ways of learning are implemented;
  6. support them in the implementation of all aspects of their work.

Management of resources

  • Ensure that appropriate, well-maintained resources are available and identify future resource needs and aspirations forconsideration in the school budget planning process
