The Royal Alexandra and Albert School exists to give our children a distinctly different start in life, preparing them for the world with hope, optimism, compassion and empathy.
We are a co-educational, non-selective state boarding school, for boys and girls aged 7 – 18. This is a boarding school with Flexi Boarding students attending from the local area and a lively community of around 300 Full Boarders, passionately involved in a wide range of after-school and weekend activities and trips.
Our Ofsted inspection of March 2024 states ”pupils are happy and well cared for at Royal Alexandra and Albert School. They benefit from positive relationships with staff across the school. Pupils feel safe, confident that if they report any concerns or worries they will be dealt with”.
As our Co-Curricular and Sporting programmes continue to flourish, we are seeking high-calibre graduates to join our team as a Graduate Assistant: Sport and PE.
We are looking for dynamic individuals who view sport not just as a subject, but as a life-changing pursuit. We want to find energetic role models who can seamlessly bridge the gap between high-level performance and nurturing education within our prestigious boarding environment.
About the Role
The Graduate Assistant plays a pivotal role in the vibrant sporting life of RAAS. This unique position blends high-level coaching support with the essential administrative coordination required to operate a complex multi-sport programme and fixture list. The successful candidate will act as a technical role model in PE lessons and competitive fixtures, whilst serving as the operational engine of our Sports Administration Hub.
Located within our beautiful estate, the school offers a welcoming and purposeful environment. Our dedicated team works collaboratively across the campus, supporting students on the sports fields, in the classrooms and within our boarding houses.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist PE staff in delivering curriculum lessons, leading warm-ups, technical demonstrations and targeted drills. You will lead small-group “clinics” to boost participation among beginners, whilst simultaneously supporting high-performance squads with high-level match preparation.
- Manage substitutions, provide tactical encouragement and officiate matches across a variety of sports under teacher supervision. You will ensure teams are correctly equipped, registered and prepared for travel.
- Lead the administrative workflow for school fixtures, including creating and publishing team sheets, booking transport and serving as a central point of contact for parents and students.
- Assist in delivering Strength and Conditioning (S&C) programmes for Sports Scholars, overseeing supervised circuits and ensuring immediate correction on form to mitigate injury risks.
- Act as a mentor to student-athletes to help them balance sports commitments with academic responsibilities.
- You will actively participate in the wider life of the boarding community by fulfilling weekly evening duties in a designated boarding house and contributing to the weekend activity rota.
We are looking for someone who:
- Holds a recent Honours Degree (preferably in Sport Science, PE or Coaching).
- Displays high-level playing or coaching experience in at least one core school sports (such as Rugby, Netball, Cricket or Football).
- Possesses a high-energy, “can-do” attitude with exceptional attention to detail.
- Connects naturally with young people and is eager to pursue a career in teaching or professional sports coaching.
- Is proactive, highly organised and has the spark necessary to inspire students within a busy, high-energy boarding environment.
