Course outline:

This interactive seminar aims to deepen your understanding of the diverse experiences of LGBT+ individuals in boarding school settings. By exploring the spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities, analysing historical and contemporary challenges faced by LGBT+ individuals, and learning strategies to foster inclusivity, you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to create supportive environments that celebrate diversity. We will examine the intersections of identity, education, and advocacy in boarding schools, and explore ways to promote a more inclusive and affirming educational experience for all students and staff.

Speaker:

Dr Clare Ives, Educational Leader and Head of The Leys School

Dr Clare Ives is Head of The Leys School in Cambridge.  Formerly Senior Deputy Head at Sevenoaks School where she was also the EDI lead and a Housemistress at Canford School, she is known for her expertise in equity, diversity and inclusion. She has led strategic, whole‑school approaches to inclusion, culture change and staff development and her work has been particularly influential in advancing understanding and practice around transgender inclusion in schools, supporting pupils, families and staff with clarity, compassion and confidence.

Clare has substantial experience advising both schools and education, social care and health related organisations on transgender rights and inclusive policy development, helping leaders to navigate complex legal and pastoral landscapes while remaining values‑led and pupil‑centred. She is known for her thoughtful, evidence‑informed leadership and her ability to balance academic excellence with authentic care for individual identity and wellbeing.


Gaelle Sullivan, Director of Research, Inclusion and IELA

Gaelle is Director of Research, Inclusion and IELA and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East.
