Course outline:

This session is designed to equip boarding staff with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to meaningfully celebrate Black History Month and to embed cultural awareness into everyday life in the boarding environment and wider school community.

Fostering an inclusive culture that recognises and values Black history and contributions is key to preparing young people for life beyond school. The session will also explore practical ways to move beyond a one-month focus, encouraging a year-round commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Training topics will include:

• The origins, aims, and evolution of Black History Month
• What meaningful Black History engagement should look like in schools and boarding houses
• Highlighting significant Black figures and untold stories
• Recommended resources and activity ideas for use in the boarding setting
• Strategies for going beyond Black History Month to embed representation and awareness year-round
• Approaches to integrating Black history into the curriculum and school culture

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the origins and purpose of Black History Month
• Apply a range of ideas and strategies to promote Black History Month within boarding houses and the wider school environment
• Identify ways to embed Black history meaningfully into the curriculum and daily practice
• Support young people in developing greater cultural awareness, empathy, and appreciation of diverse histories
