Course outline:
This seminar, led by David Walker, Director of the BSA, alongside a representative from AGBIS, will explore the role of governors in inspection within boarding schools. The session will examine how governors can ensure appropriate oversight, understand inspection frameworks, and support senior leaders effectively before, during, and after inspection.
The seminar will consider the regulatory landscape for boarding schools, the expectations placed on governors, and how inspection outcomes should inform strategic governance and continuous improvement.

- Overview of the current inspection landscape for boarding schools
- The role and responsibilities of governors in relation to inspection
- Understanding inspection frameworks (including ISI, Ofsted and other relevant bodies)
- Governor involvement before, during, and after inspection
- Common inspection findings and what they mean for governance
- Using inspection outcomes to strengthen strategy, oversight, and compliance
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:
- Understand the inspection framework(s) relevant to their boarding school
- Clarify the role of governors in preparing for and responding to inspection
- Identify the evidence inspectors may seek from governors
- Ask informed and strategic questions of senior leaders in relation to inspection readiness
- Use inspection feedback effectively to support school improvement and robust governance
David Walker, Executive Director, Boarding & Education and Director, BSA/TIOB
David is the Executive Director, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East.
