Course outline

Self-harm is a complex and sensitive issue, and school nurses, health centre and wellbeing staff can often be amongst the first to identify and notice signs or have conversations with pupils who may be struggling. This interactive training session, let by experienced trainer and speaker Satveer Nijjar, is designed specifically for nurses and health staff working in school/college settings.

Through discussion, practical examples and real-life insights, participants will develop greater confidence and understanding in recognising, responding to, and supporting young people affected by self-harm.

  • Understanding self-harm behaviours
  • Broaching suspected self-harm
  • Language use around self-harm presentations
  • Alternative strategies.

Speaker:

Satveer Nijjar, Independent Trainer

Satveer is passionate about reducing stigma around mental ill health, with a particular focus on improving understanding and responses to self-harm. She graduated in 2012 with a First-Class Honours degree in Psychology, winning the Bernice McAuley Memorial Prize for her dissertation on self-harm and culture. She went on to found Attention Seekers Training, delivering CPD-accredited self-harm awareness sessions across the UK and internationally. In 2023 alone, she trained over 23,000 people. Her work spans education, health and corporate sectors, and features in Head Talks, the Boarding Schools Association Magazine, and books by Natasha Devon and Jonny Benjamin.
