🎧 Veterans and service personnel interested in finding out more about working in boarding schools
📍 The Library, Mercers’ Hall, 6 Frederick’s Place, London EC2R 8AB
Join us for this drop-in information session to find out more about the BSA ASPIRE programme, which offers a structured pathway into boarding school jobs for veterans and service personnel.
For serving personnel and veterans, the question of ‘what next?’ can be daunting. At first glance, a service career and boarding education might appear worlds apart. But look more closely and the parallels are striking: residential communities, high expectations of personal conduct, strong pastoral responsibility and leadership exercised through daily presence. Your experience is not just relevant, it is actively sought. As a result, over the past few years, a growing number of veterans have moved into education, particularly boarding, and there is increasing recognition of the crossover between the sectors.
Through ASPIRE, the BSA – the voice of more than 600 boarding schools worldwide – provides a structured pathway into boarding with accredited training, CV support, mentoring, and visits to Ambassador Schools.
Join us on March 23 to find out more. There is no fee to attend but an RSVP by March 15 is essential. Reserve your place by emailing bsa@boarding.org.uk.
Speaker:
Mark Mortimer, Director of Defence & Military Services, BSA
Mark spent eight years as an infantry officer before becoming a teacher and assistant housemaster and moving on to spend 12 years as a boarding school Head. He believes the similarities between a service career and a career in residential education are powerful and significant: “As in the military, good schools are driven by values, mission and purpose. Boarding schools are close-knit, immersive 24/7 organisations and integrity, optimism, resilience and initiative are all qualities that are vital, as is the ability to communicate, get the best out of people and be fair and consistent. Attitude trumps aptitude.”
