Course outline:

This virtual seminar will provide an insight into current trends and good practice in boarding house facilities, enabling attendees to consider any planned changes to boarding houses in the context of the wider market. By considering trends and quality examples, attendees will be able to identify solutions and areas for improvement from other schools. This seminar will help schools better understand the key elements of a good boarding house and plan their house development accordingly. 

Training topics will include:

  • Importance of good boarding facilities – why they matter and key areas within them 
  • Key boarding house areas – step by step look at key boarding house areas including welcome entrance, walls/corridors/noticeboards 
  • Key boarding house areas – step by step look at key boarding house areas including social spaces, bedrooms, bathrooms 
  • Practical suggestions – key tips and places to buy good value items for boarding houses. 

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of boarding facilities, house decoration, furniture, and equipment across the boarding sector 
  • Guidance on low-cost ways to improve boarding houses 
  • Wider perspective on how to improve boarding facilities in your school 
  • Links to suppliers offering good value materials/equipment for boarding schools.

Speaker:

David Walker, Executive Director, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB

David is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East.
