Course outline: 

This seminar aims to help boarding staff have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding.

By the end of the session, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding.

Training topics will include:

  • Meeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team
  • Understanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school, the boarding house, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school
  • Working safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!

Learning outcomes:

  • An understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding, and their role within that
  • An increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care.

Speaker:

Dale Wilkins, Executive Director, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance

Dale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards, having previously been a course tutor since 1998.  Dale leads on all safeguarding, inspection and compliance matters for BSA Group, including liaising with ISI, Ofsted and DfE in England, and leading on the group’s work in Scotland and Wales. He trains and delivers consultancy extensively for BSA and SACPA and is Vice Chair of the Group’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Advisory Board (SAFCAB).

For 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board, is a safeguarding trainer for the Methodist Church, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra and chair of a small performing arts charity. He also holds volunteer roles in sport and in the Scout Association.
