Course outline:
This seminar will consider how the boarding environment is changing and the ways Chaplains and wider pastoral team can support young people through their emotional and spiritual development. It will address the challenges of technology and social media (including current risks and behaviours), promote discussion on how to best support young people and which approaches and strategies might be most effective.
Training topics will include:
The following sessions will all include reflections on the pastoral and spiritual perspectives of the Chaplaincy role:
- How boarding is changing
- The mental and emotional health of young people
- Is social media complicating matters?
- Proactively managing emotional crises
- Supporting young people displaying challenging behaviours.
Learning outcomes:
- To increase awareness of modern-day challenges facing young people
- To consider best practice in relation to pastoral work in schools
- To explore the role of faith in pastoral care work and discuss the interface between pastoral and spiritual responsibilities.
Speaker:

Dale Wilkins, Executive Director, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance
Dale joined the BSA in 2017 to lead safeguarding, inspection, and compliance across the UK, building on his experience as a course tutor since 1998. He works closely with ISI, Ofsted, and DfE, and oversees the Group’s work in Scotland and Wales. A trainer and consultant for BSA and SACPA, Dale is Vice Chair of SAFCAB. Previously, he was a boarding practitioner for 31 years, including Housemaster and Deputy Head at Old Swinford Hospital. He also trains for the Methodist Church, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra, chairs a performing arts charity, and volunteers in sport and Scouting.
