Housemistress/Master (Non-Teaching)

Short Term Maternity Cover – 8 weeks, September – October Half Term, Lower School

We are in need of a non-teaching temporary Housemistress/Master (HsM) to commence the next academic year (September 2025) holding the fort for our permanent Housemistress who is not due back from maternity leave until after the October Half Term.  This is a hugely valued position, not least because it offers our students some stable guidance while we await the return of our colleague, but also because this Bording House will be home to the newly launched Lower School, where, for the first time, years 7 and 8 will board together in a combined boarding house. Albeit for a short period of time, this is therefore an exciting and challenging post within the framework of an outstanding and highly motivated pastoral team. To offer the most impact and stability, the successful candidate will be highly experienced in a residential setting and will have the capacity to motivate and guide both staff and pupils. Boarding arrangements are structured horizontally. The quality of the care and support pupils receive from the House Staff is of critical importance to the school’s success and to the happiness and future success of our students.

Due to its very short term, this post is offered as a non-teaching position. A residential non-teaching HsM will be able to offer alternative daytime duties such as health or wellbeing support, co-curricular activities, sport or administration.

Salary range from £34,000-£54,000 per annum dependent on experience brought to the role. A HsM’s work is not of a nature which lends itself to the rigid definition of hours.  However, certain principles do apply, such as, the expectation for non-teaching HsMs to undertake a daytime role within the school.

Longer working hours and overnight on-call duties during term time weeks are off-set by all-year round pay (subject to start and finish dates of this short-term contract) and all school holidays recognised as paid annual leave. A HsM’s work is not of a nature which lends itself to the rigid definition of hours.  They act as one half of the full-time residential House team on a rota system that covers the Boarding House, 7 days per week, 24 hours per day during term time, with the assistance of additional daytime pastoral staff.

We look forward to receiving applications from candidates who are ready to embrace the full and varied life of a busy boarding school; caring for, guiding and supporting our students at a critical time as the new academic year starts and the new ‘Lower School’ boarding experience is launched.
