Founded in 1896, the school sits within an attractive 14-acre site overlooking the South Bay of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The school has a warm, friendly and caring ambience which is frequently commented upon by visitors. This environment enables our boys and girls to flourish personally and academically. There is good access to the cities of York, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Hull, with Manchester and Leeds Bradford airports being close by. The school, which specialises in boarding for students aged 11 to 18, provides a safe environment aimed at encouraging independence. Scarborough College places high value on pastoral care and support for every child. Children in the Junior School are closely monitored by their class teacher, whilst pupils in the Senior School benefit from the guidance of their form tutor who sensitively oversees their social development as well as academic progress. For those children who find aspects of learning more challenging, the school has a special educational needs coordinator. All the way through the school, students receive individual support and care to ensure they are happy, motivated and achieving their best. Senior students continue to receive close individual support, and staff and students work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation. The school has a strong reputation for offering a broad and stimulating education. Underpinned by traditional principles, the school has always championed innovation, which led it to be one of the first schools in North Yorkshire to introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB). The school is currently the top performing IB school in Yorkshire and the North of England. At the school’s heart are the traditional disciplines of English, mathematics, science and modern foreign languages. In Year 10, these subjects form the ‘core’ at GCSE, leaving room for three or four ‘option’ subjects. Extra English language tuition is given, where necessary, to international students. Sixth-form students study the IB, which is an exciting two-year course of study that prepares students for life after school and university. The IB offers a comprehensive and balanced qualification that is recognised throughout the world. Using the Enrichment Programme which operates outside lesson times, pupils are encouraged to develop a broad range of interests. We ensure there is something for everyone including sport, music, drama and other activities such as the Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. There are also cultural activities such as film club and chess. Every year a programme of overseas exchanges, ski trips, outings and events is undertaken. A spectacular location by the sea and a friendly, caring community. A DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE
