CRGS is an 11-18 state selective grammar school which admits boys from Year 7 and has a co-educational Sixth Form. It is one of the top-performing schools in the country and is one of very few state boarding schools, with accommodation for 30 Sixth Form students.

It is proud of its outstanding reputation for games, music and drama, and has its own swimming pool, fully-equipped gymnasium, multigym and extensive games fields.
The family atmosphere, culture of academic excellence and care for the wellbeing of students are key features of the school. Admission at 11+ is through selection tests and at 16+ is based on performance at GCSE.
