Founded in 1611, Charterhouse is one of the UK’s leading independent boarding schools. With four centuries of history behind it, the School is committed to being at the forefront of educational progress in the twenty‑first century.

Building on the success of its mixed Sixth Form, the School is moving to full coeducation from the age of 13, and will welcome the first girls into Year 9 in September 2021. There will be girls in every year group from September 2023.

The pupil roll will grow over the next decade from 800 today to around 1,000, with the increase representing additional places for girls.

The School moved to Godalming, Surrey in 1872, and is set within an inspirational 250-acre campus, conveniently located close to London and within 50 minutes of Heathrow and Gatwick airports. With 17 grass sports pitches, 3 full-sized Astroturf pitches, an athletics stadium, a full-service sports centre, 24 tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course, the campus is one of the best, if not the best in the country. Combined with a 235-seat theatre and separate music performance and art display spaces, our facilities create a setting in which pupils feel encouraged to contribute, and provides a safe community in which to explore and grow.

Our curriculum is exciting, innovative and stretching. Our pupils arrive in Year 9 and develop their intellectual curiosity by following a real breadth of academic subjects. Their curriculum in years 10 and 11 culminates with (I)GCSEs, followed by a range of flexible pathways in the Sixth Form where A Level courses and the IB Diploma Programme are on offer.  We have the highest of expectations and aspirations for both pupils and teachers and aim to stretch and challenge all our pupils well beyond the demands of the syllabus.  The university destinations of our leavers reflect both their abilities and the quality of the education we provide.

Charterhouse is one of the very few schools now that is almost 100% boarding, with daily life for all pupils revolving around the Houses. The Housemasters and their families live in the Houses and are supported by the Assistant Housemaster, the Matron (also resident) and a team of tutors. Each tutor has a small number of pupils with whom he or she meets at least once a week to provide the help and encouragement that enables every pupil to make the most of life at the School. They take an active interest in their tutees, attending concerts, plays and sporting events in which they participate.

With more than 80 different sports and activities, as well as music, drama and social opportunities, everyone is encouraged to develop existing interests to new and exciting levels or take up new ones. Over 50% of clubs and societies are pupil-led – offering real leadership opportunities and few limits to what can be pursued.
