Founded in 1611, Charterhouse is one of the UK’s leading coeducational independent schools and has a prestigious global reputation. The school is set in a beautiful and fully enclosed 250-acre campus located on the edge of the attractive market town of Godalming, in the south of England. Conveniently close to London (45 minutes) and within 50 minutes of both London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports, the campus provides an environment that is safe, rich in heritage and an inspiring setting for the whole community to live and work together.
The school is academically ambitious for all pupils, with each strand of a Charterhouse education combining to ensure that they’re ‘future ready’. Flexibility and choice sit at the heart of each pupil’s academic journey, from a wide range of course choices at GCSE, through to the option of either A Levels or the IBDP in the Sixth Form. Across a cohort of 170 pupils taking A-levels or the IB Diploma Programme in 2024, 86% of papers were awarded A*-B grades (or equivalent). The IB Diploma Programme average score was 37.5. Pupils earned places at top universities in the UK, US and around the world. Nearly 85% of UK applicants attend Russell Group universities, with Durham, UCL and King’s being the most popular, alongside places at Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial.
What makes Charterhouse so special? In short, it’s the ability to enjoy such a huge range of extracurricular activities, day in, day out, alongside academic studies. More than 80 different sports and activities are on offer, including outdoor pursuits, music, drama and other creative opportunities. All pupils are encouraged to develop existing interests and to take up new ones. With 17 grass sports pitches, 3 full-sized Astroturf pitches, an athletics stadium, a sports centre, 24 tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course, not to mention beautiful lawns and gardens, the campus is one of the best, if not the best, in the UK. Combined with a 235-seat theatre and separate music performance and art display spaces, the school’s setting encourages pupils to contribute and provides a feeling of space in which pupils can discover new opportunities and explore their potential.
“When you come to Charterhouse, you come because of the magnificent grounds, the academics, sport and arts are fantastic, but what you stay for is the true sense of belonging, being a part of something beyond yourself and the continuous personal growth you gain during your time here.” Theo, Year 13
