Abingdon promotes confidence but not complacency or arrogance. The students are encouraged to be individuals and given the support and opportunities to thrive. Our community is both nurturing and demanding.
The Other Half programme gives staff and students the opportunity to work together outside the classroom, which reaps tremendous benefits for the teaching environment. The pastoral care system sees students in small tutor groups and all belong to houses with the same housemaster throughout their time at school, ensuring close ties between home and school. Our staff really do know their pupils.
Students are encouraged to try something new, improve their existing skills and to give something back. They benefit from the advantages of single sex education but also enjoy close ties with the nearby girls’ schools. An ideal education environment.
The School offers a very impressive range of subjects at A level and the vast majority of leavers secure places to their first choice for further education, mainly Russell Group universities and a good percentage each year to Oxbridge. There is a specialist team of advisors who help students with university applications and offer comprehensive career advice.
Sport continues to excel with national representation for rugby, hockey, rowing and fencing with numerous students playing in county and regional sides. There is strength in depth with everyone given a chance to shine. Sporting tours include South Africa, Japan, Sri Lanka, Barbados and Europe and there’s plenty of opportunities closer to home.
Music is particularly strong with ABRSM professional diplomas featuring amongst the exam successes at a high level. Musicians tour regularly with Japan and Hong Kong the latest tour in 2019. Students benefit from a varied programme including visiting masterclasses with eminent musicians.
Drama is ambitious with an impressive crop of national awards for recent Abingdon Film Unit material and much-acclaimed productions throughout the school.
