Course Outline

Summer schools are unique in that they host international students within the residential context yet may have little contextual and safeguarding information about this short-term cohort.

This seminar explores key considerations for safeguarding in summer schools and highlights best practice in summer school provision that positively impacts safeguarding.

key aspects of safeguarding touches on important topics such as safer recruitment, more complex safeguarding, pre and post summer school knowledge of students and the possibility of summer school being used as a device for the trafficking of children.

Training topics will include:

  • The importance of pre-screening for contextual safeguarding information
  • How vulnerability is understood and described across diverse cultures
  • Maintaining connectivity to the wider safeguarding system and passing on safeguarding information at the end of summer school
  • Ensuring safer recruitment and safeguarding awareness standards are maintained with contract and temporary workers.

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased knowledge and understanding of the range of safeguarding concerns that may impact summer school provision and how to anticipate and plan appropriate support
  • Develop systems of pre-screening and information sharing based on best practice examples and reflect these in policy and procedure refresh
  • Ensure that safer recruitment, position of trust conduct and safeguarding awareness are priorities for the contract summer school work force

Claire Dan, Director of Safeguarding and Director, Sacpa

Claire is Director of Safeguarding and Director, Sacpa and leads on the provision of safeguarding advice and support to members and the development and delivery of CPD and safeguarding consultancy services. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare, youth justice, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.
