Cothill is a co-educational prep school set in rural Oxfordshire with a strong boarding heritage, dedicated to shaping confident, capable and grounded young children. High academic standards are paired with exceptional pastoral care, giving every child the support and encouragement they need to flourish. Learning extends beyond the classroom, with outdoor exploration and freedom playing a vital role in nurturing their curiosity and independence.
Here, children are encouraged to be fully themselves —curious, creative, ambitious and imperfect. Individuality and character are celebrated with children leaving us with a quiet confidence and inner capability that prepares them to thrive anywhere. The spirit of the school is warmly adventurous and quietly assured. It embraces a sense of discovery and energy, while remaining deeply rooted in care and community.
Boarding or day
For most of its 155-year history, Cothill was a full boarding school. In September 2023, it opened its doors to day pupils for the first time giving families more choice while keeping the warmth of a boarding community at the school’s heart. Boarding lies at the heart of Cothill’s ethos, offering a warm, well-structured environment that nurtures each child’s sense of security, engagement and wellbeing. Pupils settle quickly into a close-knit community, surrounded by friends and staff who champion them at every turn. Above all, Cothill offers both a safe haven and a springboard: a nurturing environment where children feel secure, and a vibrant setting that inspires them to grow, explore and be themselves.
Co-education
Cothill became fully co-educational in September 2025, welcoming girls alongside boys from ages 7 to 13. The school is now part of Radley Schools Group, joining a family of schools that share a commitment to broad, character-forming education.
