Posted: 21st January 2022

Hugo, an Upper Sixth pupil at St Peter’s School, York, has been placed in the top 100 pupils in the country for Maths after reaching Round 2 of the Senior Olympiad.

Before Christmas, Hugo sat the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge Olympiad paper along with Emily and Monica, also from the Upper Sixth, placing all three pupils in the top 0.01% of pupils nationally.

The Olympiad paper is accessed by pupils who perform exceptionally well in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, and includes a three-and-a-half hour exam with incredibly challenging questions.

Hugo obtained a certificate of distinction for his phenomenal score and now qualifies for the Senior Olympiad Round 2. Hugo is the first pupil from St Peter’s to qualify for this round in recent years.

Hugo’s success places him in the top 100 pupils nationally, and The Olympiad round 2 is an entry point to the training and selection programme for international competitions.

Hugo said: “The first round was very challenging, but my preparation paid off and I am very happy with how I performed. I look forward to participating in the next round later this month.”

Jeremy Walker, Head Master of St Peter’s School, said “Congratulations to Hugo and also Emily and Monica. To be placed amongst the very brightest mathematicians in the country is an astonishing achievement and an accolade for the pupils and their talented teachers.”
