Millfield Lower Sixth pupil, Dan Varney, with other pupils and staff, organised a charity ‘sleep-out’ to raise awareness and funds for homelessness charity, Crisis, after recognising the plight of homeless people in his home town. Through sponsorship, the pupils raised over £800.
Dan, who lives in Oxford but is a boarder at Millfield in Somerset, previously volunteered with the National Citizen Service and wanted to do more to support homeless people.
With the help of the Master in charge of Chess, Mr Turner, the teenager organised for himself and nine of his fellow pupils and five staff members to sleep outside for one night to raise awareness of the discomfort homeless people feel every day.
Dan Varney said, “After seeing people live in discomfort on the streets of Oxford, I wanted to do whatever I could to help. The experience showed me just how difficult it is to sleep outside without shelter, even for just one night. It made me appreciate how lucky I am to have the safety of a house to go home to, and I hope to organise the event again next year to raise even more money for homelessness charities.”
Millfield Assistant Head (Co-curriculum), Eric Jones said, “It is great to see pupils like Dan using their initiative to help charitable causes and thinking of ways they can help others.”
